Childhood

The first child of Lucullus and Adelia Chaucer, Lucien is the legal heir to the Chaucer estate and name. He had a happy if quiet childhood, marked by an interest in the pursuit of knowledge. He was taught to read at an early age by his father and did so voraciously through his childhood, supplemented by preliminary education at the pre-education school where his father taught Transfiguration. It was from Lucullus which Lucien gained his love of Transfiguration, and much of the reason why he excelled in it through his time at Hogwarts.

He preferred to be indoors as a child, hanging around his mother or holed up in the nursery or reading a book pilfered from his father's study. Though he was exposed to other children via his class at Blackhill Wood, he professed to his mother while still quite young that he disliked them, found them to be too loud and demanding.

Due to outstanding family issues Lucien was not introduced to his mother's family until the age of six, at a Christmas party held at the Ellwood-Luxe estate at Disgleirio, in Wales. It was here that Lucien met his cousin Cassius, whom with he became very good friends.

Because of their rather differing demeanours they did not get on well at first: Cassius, then seven years, complimented Lucien's long, wavy, golden hair and then likened him to a pretty girl; Lucien responded by punching him and knocking him to the ground.

After this little run-in however they managed to get along extremely well, and their mothers often made a point to visit each other so the boys might play together. As he grew up he came to learn more about his mother's family, and felt more of a kinship toward the Ellwood-Luxes than to the family of his surname. Cassius was his best mate, after all, and they got along famously; his youngest brother and sister and even his father were too easy-going and relaxed-- his youngest siblings loud and exuberant. The Ellwood-Luxes were cold and calculating, traditional and rigid in their ways, and these were qualities which Lucien found extremely attractive. Privately he considered himself more of an Ellwood-Luxe than a Chaucer, but this was never something he ever told anyone.

Hogwarts

Sorting

Cassius, being a year older than him, attended a year earlier than Lucien did, which was a cause for some amount of stress. While Lucien looked forward very much to a proper and formal magical education, he worried often about whether he would be able to stay around Cassius, or that the other children would be just as loud and demanding as the children at Blackhill Wood. Cassius had told him that he had been sorted into Slytherin house, whatever that meant; Lucien just hoped that he would be as well.

When time finally came for Lucien to go to Hogwarts and be sorted, the Hat was very keen to put him in Ravenclaw. Lucien begged him silently to do otherwise, to put him with his truer cousins, with Cassius, in Slytherin. The Hat obliged, but not reluctantly; and Lucien joined the green-clad masses, at Cassius' side.

School life

His day-to-day life at Hogwarts was not remarkable really in any way. He spent the majority of his time with Cassius, picking him out of fights and, generally, keeping him. Lucien was almost unreachably cold to his fellow students, and for his first several years interacted nearly exclusively with his cousins. He was a good student and excelled in Transfiguration, but was abysmal in Herbology.

It was in his fifth year when his kingdom of sorts altered with the appearance of Eve Hallows in Cassius' life: a cheeky third year halfblood girl who had, somehow, managed to charm Cassius into being friendly. His initial distrust for her was dissolved eventually when she proved to be no threat, but he remained wary of her until his seventh year.

In his sixth year, Cassius' seventh, Cassius began quarreling with their cousin Lysander about various things, including this Eve Hallows. Lucien tried to help as always, trying his best to pluck Cassius out of fights when he needed to; but at the end of that school year (1934) at the end-of-term ball, Cassius and Lysander began to duel mercilessly on the ballroom floor. Lucien tried to help then, too, but was violently pushed away by his cousin, who refused any offer to help.

Cassius stormed out, bleeding from a well-aimed diffindo to the torso, and Lucien followed him out in an attempt to bandage him up. Cassius once again refused help and scorned his family, inadvertently blaming Lucien for what happened. Fed up, Lucien left Cassius there, and Cassius apparated away to places unknown.

Lucien spent his seventh and final year at Hogwarts largely in solitude, learning what it was to be self-sufficient rather than dogging his cousin's footsteps every moment of the day. He did, however, become rather good friends with Eve, whom he tutored in Potions for a good part of the school year.

He and Cassius had no contact until the family Christmas gathering of that year, where they made up, citing their own faults to the situation. It was also at this party at which his affection for Aislin O'Shae was made known, and that she returned as such.

Post-graduation and family politics

Unsure of what to do with his life, Lucien returned to Pagefield after his graduation. He was unable to make a move as he watched Lysander conquer the Ellwood-Luxes, Cassius dethroned from the title of heir. He remains staunchly of the opinion that Cassius is the rightful leader of the family; especially after the death of his uncle, Cassius' father, Marcellus Ellwood-Luxe.

At Lysander's death he aimed to help Cassius win back the seat which is rightfully his.

He had been ignoring the fact that his romance with Aislin was more than likely doomed, as they were both the heirs to their respective families and had duties to attend to within their own heirship. They would not be able to marry, because it would mean the desecration of one or both of their names, old and respected-- until Aislin's mother was killed and Aislin was forced into the position early, and they were forced to meet with reality.

In 1938 they made the decision to simply marry, with the premise that the girl children would be called O'Shae and the boy children would be called Chaucer, and that their families would be united as one.
