Biography:
Born into the oldest and wealthiest pureblood familiy in Syria, Nabih was never expected to live an ordinary life. As the second born son of the current head of the family, Nabih learnt very early what was expected of him and what it meant to carry the Azma family name. In his early childhood, Nabih was taught by his mother and aunts, together with his cousins and other children from different (and less powerful) pureblood families. The importance of family and magical superiority over non-pureblood wizards and witches as well as non-magical folk was the core part of that education. A lot of times the children were also put in different difficult situations alone to assess their ability to use their magic. Nabih mastered these situations with ease and learned control over his magic very quickly. At the age of eight, he was already wielding a wand and casting the spells his mother taught him. His father, being rather disappointed with the magical abilities of his first born son, was pleased with his progress and it was decided that, despite the usual family traditions, Nabih was to be send to Egypt to attend Heka.
During his school years, Nabih, fueled by his hunger for knowledge and power, worked very hard to achieve success and to be the best. At 15, Nabih knew that Heka wasn’t able to provide him with more knowledge, and so he returned to Damascus and tried to convince his father to send him to school in Switzerland. Drawn to the power of dark magic that the school curriculum promised to teach and knowing that it would also help him to become the future head of the family, Nabih did not stop working on convincing his father until he said yes. Arrangements were made, and Nabih was off to Europe.
Once Nabih graduated Ellebart he returned home and it became quite obvious to everyone that he was his father’s favorite. Where his older brother lacked intelligence and natural aptitude, Nabih possessed twice as much. Leaving his older brother to do most of the dirty work that came with running the Azma empire and keeping all the other magical families in Syria in check, Nabih helped his father whenever he could with diplomatic relations, meddling in muggle politics and keeping Aurors away from their doorstep. He was also in charge of his younger siblings’ education for a little while until his younger brother Laith graduated from Heka. After convincing his father once more that studying would benefit the family, Nabih went to Cairo University where he studied various subjects such as politics of magic, diplomacy and advanced magical combat techniques.
Towards the end of his studies, Nabih gave in to his mother’s constant demand to get married. As tradition, he let his mother make the arrangements and only met his bride on the day of the wedding. With 21, he was married to an equally young bride, and constantly travelled between Cairo and Damascus. As Nabih had expected, this union did not bring him any happiness. What he had not expected was, that it would also not give him a son, or any child to speak of. After trying for a while, Nabih decided that it wasn’t worth his time, and instead he decided that he needed some distance from his marriage. When he applied to teach at Al-Madrasat Heka, he got the position almost instantly.
He only returned home, when his younger brother Laith went missing a few years later. By then, he was 26 years old. It took him a while to figure out, what exactly had happened and that Laith was not missing, but had turned his back on the family. It pained him a great deal to know that his beloved younger brother had just gone and disappeared. It pained him even more to see what it had done to his father and mother. They were devastated and at the same time furious that Laith had dared to damage their family name.
No one left the Azma family. No one.
Years passed, and Nabih had stopped actively looking for his brother. He’d gone back to teaching and expanding the influence of his family outside of Syria. By now, he had connections with wizards in almost every part of the world and it helped smooth over a lot of his older brother’s ‘misconducts’. More than once, he had saved his brute of a brother from arrests by aurors that were operating internationally. Nabih did not like that part of his job very much, but it had to be done. His family needed it done.
Much to his surprise, Nabih received an owl from one of his contacts in England about two years ago. He had instructed his more trusted contacts to inform him if the Azma or his younger brother’s name came up in any context. And the owl had informed him that a young boy had been invited to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. A young boy named Nael Laith Antony. Nabih wasn’t sure if that was actually a lead worth looking into, but something in his gut told him to investigate. And so he did.
When Nabih entered the little grocery store situated on a street corner in the south of Dover, he already knew that his search was over. The young boy behind the counter was a spitting image of his brother Laith when he had been a child. And that young boy was mustering him quite intently. Just seeing the child made Nabih angry. His brother had not just left, leaving behind everyone and everything. No, he also had got himself a wife and a child, a son even. Perfectly concealing his rising anger, Nabih approached the child and asked him for Laith.
The reunion between the brothers was neither warm nor hearty. Laith was rather unwelcoming, once he had recovered from the shock of being found, and that mixed-blood wife of his was almost hostile toward Nabih. Of course, he did not care for their feelings or their protests. They had two more children, twin girls, much younger and not of much interest for Nabih at the moment. But Nael was very much of interest. Even more so, because Laith and Susan had decided to live a muggle life and the boy knew nothing. Absolutely nothing.
It did not take Nabih much effort to make the parents send their son to Hogwarts. It was not Nabih’s first choice, but it was the most reasonable and diplomatic for now. At first, he had just wanted to take the boy and bring him to Damascus, where he belonged. But he also knew that his father would not react kindly to Laith having been found. For now, he could not get on board with the repercussions this was likely going to have, despite his anger. Besides Nabih knew that it was going to be better to bring Nael over to his side by his own will. He would make him see where he belonged and what he was capable of and then things would fall into place by themselves.
Despite knowing the risk he took, Nabih decided to keep it a secret that he had found Laith. Instead, he sent owls back to Damascus to inform his father, that he would remain in England for the time being to work on relations within the British Ministry of Magic. After that, he applied to teach at Hogwarts. What better way to get to know the magical families of Britain more than through teaching their children?
Nabih was ready for a new challenge.
Education:
Early and Primary Education: Homeschooled in Damascus, Syria
Secondary Education: Al-Madrasat Heka, Egypt and Ellebart Dark Academy, Switzerland
Further Education: Cairo University, Egypt
Strengths and Weaknesses:
Nabih’s ambition is a strength and a weakness alike. His need for knowledge and power and his desire to be the best drives him to excel at the things he does in life. It also has led him to make questionable decisions in his life and to allow for bad things to happen to other people around him. While not fond of violence, Nabih has accepted that it is needed to keep people in line. If presented with choice, Nabih will always choose the diplomatic path first, as he likes to manipulate people to do his bidding. With that comes his need to control people and situations around him
Physical Characteristics
Nabih has black curly hair that is kept short, dark eyes, and a beard that he carefully maintains to not grow too long. He is of medium height (1,74m), and possesses a fit/muscular figure.
Personality Traits
Nabih is a calm, ambitious and inquisitive man. He likes to observe people in a room before he says anything himself. This makes him naturally good at listening and reading between the lines, if necessary. When he talks, his tone carries authority and while not rude, he often does not leave much room for discussion. At times, Nabih brings out his charm to get what he wants or to stir the opposite person in the direction he wants. If nice and diplomatic communication fails to do the job, Nabih does not shy away from threats to get people to cooperate with him.
Nabih knows he represents his family and carries himself as such. His loyalty toward his father and the rest of the Azma family is deeply rooted within him and his actions are always in their benefit. At some point in the future, he will become the head of the Azma family and that makes him also a careful and cautious man. His feelings, hopes and dreams are carefully tucked away, which makes it seem like he doesn’t have them.
