“We could try a little more seriously.” Olette nodded. It would probably help if Bracken didn’t do impressions of girls.

Suddenly he was moving closer to her, talking about being alone. A chill ran up her spine. She stared at him, shocked. “Bracken, I-” she started, confused as to why he suddenly wanted to be alone with her like that.

Then it hit her. And she felt dumb. It was part of the game. Imagine it’s Jere she told herself. If it were, she would have reached for his hand. But that wasn’t subtle, like he’d said.

She slowly reached over with her opposite arm, lightly brushing like he had. “That sounds… nice…” She moved her hand and sat back. “That didn’t sound very flirty, did it? How do you know what to say right then and there? You don’t have time to think about what would be the best thing to say.”

She laughed as he did his best girl impression. “So, like…” She tried to brush his arm like he’d done hers, but erupted into a fit of giggles. “Sorry, sorry,” she apologized, her cheeks turning a bit pink. She tried to compose herself before trying again.

She had trouble though, because every time she tried to, she burst into giggles again. It was different because he was a friend. If he were someone like Jeremiah, or even a stranger, this would be easier. But she couldn’t stop thinking about his awful impression.

“Okay, okay, okay.” She took in a deep breath, and ran her fingers up his arm. “You’re so funny,” she attempted in her best sultry voice. But it sounded so unlike her that her cheeks went from a light pink to red. She tried to laugh it off. “See, I’m awful at this!”

At first it felt as though he was rubbing it in how much prettier everyone was than her. Olette crossed her arms, frowning as he went on to describe Pilar and then himself. And complaining that he wasn’t a greek god. So what? He still was handsome, and she was just there. And a halfblood in a pureblood’s world? So what. He couldn’t possibly think that compared to being a squib in a pureblood world. She’d give anything to even be a halfblood, as long as she was something.

She was about to interject when he started talking about what he liked in girls. Teasing. Playfulness. Her and Jeremiah had a bit of that at one point. But that was long gone. But she supposed she could try it out. And she had 2 months to practice it.

Coy wasn’t something she was good at. “Can you teach me how to be like that?” She asked, looking up at his eyes, pleading.

She rolled her eyes at him. The boy from the wedding had tried to have a similar conversation with her. “Let me guess, you think I deserve better? You know I can’t get better. Even if they can get over the whole disowned squib thing, there’s still the matter that guys would rather go after the pretty girl, even the ones they can’t have.” How many guys now had crushes on Pilar, despite the fact she was engaged to someone else?

“I know you said ‘all or nothing,’ but wouldn’t something be better than nothing?”

She knew she wasn’t beautiful. There was nothing special or striking about her appearance. She was just there, fading into the background constantly. And nice, sure. But she didn’t want to be nice. Other girls weren’t nice like she was. Sure, she liked True and Pilar, but they weren’t always ‘nice.’ She wanted to be more like them.

She supposed he was thinking she was interested in making herself appealing to other guys. “Well, me and him have talked for years and that didn’t stop him from leaving me at a wedding to be with someone else. I want to be that someone else. I want to be enough.” Her voice was stern, in contrast to the soft it had been moments ago. “No one wants the nice girl.”

She took his hand as he helped her over the log.

“No,” she sighed. “I know I should be, but… I can’t.” She spent too many hours thinking about how she could get him back, how she could be enough for him. He had told her that she was his type, but she knew that was a lie. Girls like True and Cecelia were his type.

“Brax… Do you think I’m too plain? Like, why don’t guys want good girls? How can I be more appealing?” Why Jeremiah had ever wanted her in the first place was still a mystery. She was shy, quiet, and boring company in her opinion. Bracken had found her attractive when she was dressed up like True at that one party, but otherwise, in her normal attire, she was back to being a plain Jane.

Olette paused for a moment at his question. She knew the answer she should say, the one he wanted to hear. But how could she be over it, over him? Even if she did eventually get over him, she’d never get over it. She’d never get over the feeling that she wasn’t good enough, that even in the few hours of one of their dates, he felt the need to seek someone else out. She’d never get over this feeling of betrayal.

“Over him or over what he did to me?” It didn’t matter, because the answer was no in both cases. She knew she should be over him after everything that he did, but she’d seen how badly he felt about it. He was always so nice to her when they were together. It was part of why she had avoided him for months.

8
Parts of it were sad, and it was a sad future to imagine. A future where people are prosecuted for learning and bettering themselves. “It’s…” she paused, thinking. “It’s hopeful,” she decided. It didn’t particularly end. Just a chapter in the characters’ lives had ended. And there were new beginnings left to be found.

Her eyes lit up as he mentioned liking books about plants. But before she could ask him further about it, he asked the same question back to her. “Oh, I don’t have one, but I really love the Narnia books, oh and The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings by Tolkien! They’re both fantasy books about grand adventures in faraway lands.” She could talk for ages about them, but he didn’t want to listen to her rattle on for the next ten hours about it.

“But, plants,  huh? I actually work at the Greenhouses in Hogsmeade! What’s your favourite plant, then?” She looked up at him with bright eyes. She wanted to ask him more about living on a farm, and about his siblings, but she would be patient for now.

9
She started to frown when he said he hadn’t heard of it, but then he smiled and she did too. “Well, it takes place in the future, sort of, where books are banned, and firemen are people who burn books, instead of stopping fires. And one fireman eventually quits his job and tries to save the books instead.”

She stopped, realizing she was talking fast again. She typically got overexcited when talking about books. Then remembered how Jeremiah said it was cute and she blushed.

She tucked her book into a shoulder bag and stood up with Glenn. “Sure, that sounds nice.” She nearly reached for his hand out of instinct, as that was how she and Jeremiah would walk. Instead, she let it swing next to her side.

“Do you have a favorite book?” She asked, unsure of how to continue the conversation. She didn’t know him terribly well, and was a bit awkward when it came to thinking of things to talk about.

10
She was taken by surprise when she noticed someone sit next to her, but gave a soft smile once she realized it was Glenn. She’d met him a few days before, but it’d felt much longer than that.

“Oh, just Fahrenheit 451.” She laid her bookmark on the page she was at and closed the book. She knew it’d be rude to continue reading when Glenn wanted to make conversation. And truth be told, she wouldn’t mind getting to know him better. He seemed very nice.

“Nice morning, isn’t it? How’s your week been?”

Olette frowned. She knew the types that had ‘misunderstandings,’ and Bracken wasn’t one of them, not in her opinion. He was nice. She didn’t know his background, but he wasn’t the rough and tumble type. She very nearly asked who would do that to him, then she remembered Jeremiah’s bruised knuckles over Christmas and how upset he got when she questioned him about it.

“I’m sorry…” She said instead as she sat next to him. She gave a soft smile at him. “Hopefully you don’t get caught up in any more misunderstandings. I’m sure it makes Pilar worried sick.” After all, it worried her and she didn’t even know him terribly well. And Olette was always worried about Jeremiah, but she hadn’t noticed bruises on his knuckles since.

2 August. After breakfast.
Outside Palais Longchamp

It was a lovely morning. Warm, but a slight breeze to keep it cool. She decided it was the perfect day for reading in the garden. The marvelous fountain in front of her, the tower and Notre Dame nearby, it nearly felt like the real thing.

The summer was halfway gone. The beginning had been nice, but the past few days had been a whirlwind. There was all that drama that had happened at the party for the twins, but she was sure not to get anywhere near it. Then the boy in the Infirmary, and Jeremiah getting upset, and the movie… She needed a day like today to just unwind from it all.

It was a fairly quiet morning. After all, it was only the morning. Too early for most people to already have gotten into some sort of mishap. So Olette was simply cleaning up from the day before. She enjoyed organizing the Infirmary. Most of the others didn’t, but it was one thing she was useful for here.

Suddenly she heard someone call out. She headed towards the entrance to find Bracken there. “Oh, are you working this mor-” She cut off, noticing the mark on his face. “Oh my god, are you okay?” She asked worriedly, quickly approaching him.

She brought her hand up to lightly touch the bruise. “I don’t think we have any ice here, you’d probably have to go to the kitchens for that. Oh! We do have some bruise paste though! I think I just put it away. Let me go grab that. Go ahead and take a seat on one of the beds.”

She quickly grabbed the paste and came back. She started dabbing it on his jaw. “What happened?”

Olette wouldn’t deny the beds were comfy. Almost too comfy for her taste. She was too used to uncomfortable beds.

She shyly shrugged. “Just didn’t want you to go hungry.” Her cheeks had turned a soft pink at his compliments. “Are they good? I made them up earlier this morning. Do you need anything else?” She was eager to please, especially since he was so nice to her.

Olette was even more confused now. She’d been used to her parents trying to set her up as a kid, but not with magazines and butterbeers. She opened her mouth, unsure of what to even say for a moment, before finally landing on “Why?”

After all, she wasn’t exactly the type of girl wizard boys wanted. She’d only contaminate the bloodline. “And who?” She asked because her curiosity was peaked. There was only one boy she really had eyes for. She wondered, well, hoped that was who Pilar was talking about. Of course, he didn’t see her that way. She was just like a sister or something to him. Perhaps it was better to find someone else.

“Fine.” She agreed, taking one of the butterbeers. She thought through the answers. There were wild animals in the savannah that could kill her, so scratch that. She wouldn’t mind seeing the Vatican, but she wasn’t religious either. “I’m guessing I’m just supposed to give one answer? I suppose the beach, maybe?” The ruins would be nice, too, but an ideal vacation would be somewhere she could relax and read. “Would it be like, a secluded beach or full of people?” Because if there were people all over, she’d have to rethink her answer.

“Yeah, sorry, it’s already about ten.”

She stood up, leaving her tea on a nearby table. “Let me get you some tea really quick. I’ll be right back.”

She quickly headed to the tea and coffee station in the corner of the room, preparing a cup of Earl Grey. As it steeped, she put a variety of pastries on a small plate. She headed back to Bracken, the tea in one hand and pastries in the other.

“It still needs to steep just a few more minutes, but I brought you some food to get you by until lunch. I didn’t know what you liked, so I brought a little of everything.” She set both of them on the table as well. She woke up early each morning and made up things like scones and muffins and croissants for the others.

Olette was in bed, doing a bit of late night reading before going to sleep. Reading this late was always dangerous, as she always wound up staying up later than she meant to, then regretting it in the morning.

However, she was interrupted by a knock on her door. She figured it must have been one of the younger students, perhaps Bea. After all, it was a new place, and sometimes it was hard to sleep in a new bed.

She opened the door surprised to find Pilar there. “Hey, Pil. What’s up?” She looked confused, wondering what the girl could need from her at this hour.

Olette looked up at the sudden voice. She quickly blushed as she looked away, noticing the boy was still in his boxers. She knew the boy. She’d seen him yesterday, but hadn’t said hello yet. She wasn’t quite sure how to talk to him. After all, their only interaction had been a snog during a game last summer. But she hadn’t forgotten the way he snogged her or the way he said she looked nice.

“Oh, um, yeah, I can- I can make you a cup if you’d like. What kind would you like? I made an Earl Grey for myself, but there’s some greens and whites if you’d rather...” She was going on again. She blushed as she paused. “Did you miss breakfast?”

Hôtel d’Assézat
2nd day of camp. After breakfast.

The day before had been a long one. Olette had enjoyed the first few days at camp, before the rest of the students came. It’d been nice and quiet. It had a certain romantic atmosphere about it. That was until it filled with the others.

It was a nice day, so most of the kids were outside. She didn’t have a problem with kids, but sometimes just wanted some quiet time to herself or just with another person or two. So she found herself in the main area of her cabins, sipping a cup of tea by the fireplace.

She knew she probably ought to be out there, meeting new people. But meeting new people was just so exhausting. And there were so many of them. Maybe later, or the next day. She still had to recover from the business of the day before.

“Did you hear about the Fetterquip boy? Never got his letter. Deplorable, if you ask me,” I hear my mother say before pausing to sip her tea. “Not only that, but they're still proud of him.”

My mother is in the next room, having tea with her longtime friend, Mabel.

“There's some bad blood in them if you ask me. They say they're pureblood, but I doubt it. They just don't fit in,” I hear Mabel say. “Lord knows what I'd do if something like that happened to me.”

“I would never dare to have a squib in my house, family or not. Can you imagine what people would say?”

I'm in the other room, supposed to be playing. But, I can't help but overhear the two talking. I haven't shown any magical tendencies yet, unlike my brother, who has been been doing things since he was a baby. My birthday is coming up, and I'm worried I won't get my letter. My mother thinks squibs are no better than muggles, if not worse. They're social outcasts, and my mother won't let that happen to her. If  I don't get my letter, I won't have a home, a family, anything.

I start crying, but try to stifle my sobs. I'm too late, though.

“What is that--? Hold on, Mabel...”

My mother walks in the room, and looks agitated. “You're not hurt, you've no reason to cry.” Her voice is stern, yet quiet. “Now, get back to your playing.” I watch as she heads back to Mabel. My mother has always been stern with me, while babying Killian, my brother. Sometimes I wonder if she has the same suspicions I do about my magical ability.

I try not to listen or cry as the two ladies go on about how terrible squibs are, and boast about how great my brother is.

“What about Olette?” I hear Mabel's voice in a loud whisper. I know she's trying to make sure I don't hear, but she doesn't have a quiet voice.

“Oh, she's fine. Her letter will come in February.” My mother's tone is rushed and she quickly changes the subject to Mabel's own children. She knows.
