Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Felicity 'Flick' Walker

Birthday: 11 November, 1944

Hometown: Melbourne, Australia

Bloodline:
Muggleborn

Magical Strength (pick one):
Transfiguration

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Conjuring & Summoning

Year (pick two): Third year / Fourth Year

Biography:
With the bombing of Darwin in 1943 at the hands of the Japanese, and with a baby on the way, Richard and Katherine Walker decided that the distant capital of Australia's north should best be left for the rebuilding efforts, and moved to the newly-emerging suburbs of St. Kilda in Melbourne. This was a relocation of nearly 3800 kilometres, and served as the brave new frontier into which Felicity Walker was born.

Devoted, middle-aged parents Katherine and Richard had been successful banking clerks for most of their working lives, and so Felicity's childhood was one of relative opulence compared to the kids with whom she attended kindergarten and primary school. She was afforded some of the best education available in the state, and attended both public and private schools in her younger years. Despite her relatively abrasive personality, Felicity made fast friendships during this period of her life, and cemented her roots securely in Melbourne.

Felicity's younger, fraternal twin siblings, David and James, eventually ended up enjoying Felicity's proverbial 'testing-of-the-waters' by the time they followed in her footsteps and went to school. With Felicity approximately 6 years their senior, they could benefit from her experience and relative renown. Felicity enjoyed roughhousing with her growing brothers, wrestling and playing footy in the backyard. Despite the best efforts of her mother to try and get her daughter to enjoy some of the finer things-- Felicity's hobbies never quite touched traditionally-female roles.

Secretly, it suited both Felicity's parents just fine.

By the time Felicity turned 12, old enough to head to high school, she'd grown herself quite the reputation. Parent-teacher visits became slightly more common; she'd grown taller and more imposing, and combined with her attitude, Felicity could be perceived as a bit of a bully. She certainly never refrained from telling anyone anything, which often brought her into trouble.

She struggled in the first year of high school. Brought into an environment where everything was unfamiliar, and her old tactics of barging through problems didn't work, she was forced to re-evaluate her own approach to things. She was forced to make new friends, to round her personality to a softer side without feeling like she was losing her integrity; to try and reconcile her sense of self with the newer, higher-tier expectations of adolescence. Her maturity hadn't yet developed-- she was a late-bloomer.

This situation was only complicated further by the development of Felicity's magical abilities.

In a turn of events that no one had expected, Felicity began to display strange tendencies of uncontrolled magic. As both her parents were non-magical themselves, and neither of her brothers displayed any similar behaviour-- Katherine and Richard began to believe that Felicity was either mentally ill, or simply becoming more rebellious. Curfews became stricter, groundings became harsher, and Felicity was placed in a position of near-constant paranoia over something she could hardly comprehend, or control.

Luckily, a teacher at Felicity's high school, themselves gifted in the magical arts, noticed Felicity's errant displays of magical ability and decided to contact Hogwarts, as well as inform Felicity and her family about the source of Felicity's new, strange behaviour. Katherine and Richard were quite reserved towards the idea of sending their daughter to a school for magic, much less one that was across the planet. However, once they were informed of the dangers of letting their daughter's magic go unchecked, they warmed to the idea. They decided that despite the distance, Felicity should go.

Felicity was less keen on the idea. After all, she'd laid down her roots in Melbourne. She'd made friends and struggled through high school and was finally beginning to crack the code on how to be an adolescent. Relocating to rainy England, all the way across the world, was the last thing she wanted to do. She didn't want to move away from her mum and dad, or her brothers, to share a room with complete strangers. She hardly understood the concepts in her Normal classes, and if she couldn't understand those, how on Earth was she supposed to learn how to do magic?

This brings us to the present day, just weeks removed from the beginning of the new school term. Felicity is badly-adjusted, still resentful from the abrupt removal of her roots, and steadfast in the belief she'll never fit in.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

House Request: Gryffindor

Personality:
Felicity is everything her upbringing and internal struggles have made her into; she's loud, brash, abrasive, and enjoys stirring trouble to draw attention away from her own insecurities. In the same vein, Felicity's lack of emotional maturity sees her seeking to place others below her, regardless of tactics. She's brutally honest, proud, blunt, and refuses to lie. Though her figure isn't as physically imposing, she's scrappy, and ready to throw hands at a moment's notice.

Felicity's loyalty to non-magical society is strong, and her eccentricities reveal themselves in the desperate cling to Muggle technology, from emerging technologies to pre-existing luxuries. She has grown up in a society untouched by magic, and much of her behaviour stems from the fact that magic was never around to make life easier.

Felicity is also fiercely loyal to her chosen family, and will desperately attempt to make friends in order to protect herself, and draw attention away from the fact that this is a brand new world. With the characteristic drawl of an Australian accent and its slang, and behaviour that's not-quite normal, Felicity will make herself known to the entire school whether they like it or not.

Appearance:
Felicity hasn't yet hit her growth spurt, and is still relatively short for her age. Her active youth and continued adolescence has stripped away much of her childhood puppy fat, and she's athletic and strong for her age. She often wears a haughty expression; narrowed brown eyes under dark eyebrows. Her brown hair is often pulled back from her face, either tucked behind her ears or pulled up into a ponytail.

She's often seen with bruised knees, scraped elbows, or some other form of superficial injuries. She's a troublemaker, and unafraid to get into a scrap.

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

Of all the places in this godforsaken castle, at least the dungeons reminded her a little of St. Kilda. The smell of wet rock and mildew, the echoes of dripping water-- it was almost like she was standing underneath the pier and looking out over the dark water. Regardless of where you were in the world, at least you could count on subterranean basements to be the same. Silver linings.

"Didn't you know she's kicked the bucket?" Flick retorted, pushing off the wall she'd been leaning against, and squaring up to the first-year. She emerged from the shadows and flicked her hair out of her eyes, which were narrowing more and more by the second. She crossed her arms and tried to look mean, which usually worked because she was.

"What're you even doing down here, squirt?" She said, and demonstratively jerked her chin up in the demand for an answer. Now that she was closer to the girl, she could see the lion stitched to her breast, and the sight of it made her lips curl in a sneer. If this girl was a Gryffindor, Flick was a bloody dropbear. "You must be desperate for friends if you let some fifth years convince you that Emma Birch still haunts these corridors."

Hi, Felicity!

Your app is great, but there are a couple of biographical details we'd like to clarify before we can accept you.

It seems like Felicity is a late bloomer in terms of her magical abilities; however, generally speaking, the magical systems in place to detect magical children are pretty infallible. If you want Felicity to be a late bloomer to the extent that her magic goes undetected until 13, you'll need to submit a special request for this, as it counts as a 'complicated' background/plotline. Furthermore, given that she's a late bloomer, she would probably not be at a third year level in terms of her magical levels and it would make little sense to place her in third year. If you wish to go with the late bloomer plotline, you'll need to add an explanation in your special request that allows for her abilities/skill to be correct for her year (for example, intense homeschooling for a year or so prior to joining Hogwarts). Alternatively, you can choose to forgo the late bloomer special request and rewrite your biography to just have Felicity be a standard 3rd year transfer instead (or to have been at Hogwarts since first year). Please bear in mind that acceptance of special requests is not guaranteed.

You also mention that Felicity's teacher contacts Hogwarts after discovering her magical abilities. We actually have Australian schools in our canon (see here), and JK Rowling has alluded to the fact that there is a magical school in Australia in HP canon as well. It's therefore highly unlikely that Hogwarts would be the school the teacher contacts, or the one that she attends, unless she is doing so specifically as a transfer or because her parents are requesting to send her there. If you could alter your bio to take into account that she is a transfer case rather than implying Hogwarts is the first port of call, this would resolve the issue.

Once you've made the required changes (and sent in a special request, if necessary), please could you repost your entire revised application below, and we'll be more than happy to take another look. Thanks!

Her maturity hadn't yet developed-- she was a late-bloomer.

This situation was only complicated further by the development of Felicity's magical abilities.

In a turn of events that no one had expected, Felicity began to display strange tendencies of uncontrolled magic around the middle of 1957.

Luckily, a teacher at Felicity's high school, themselves gifted in the magical arts, noticed Felicity's errant displays of magical ability and decided to contact the Australian Wizarding school before her manifestations further derailed her schoolyear. From that point, in joint understanding with Felicity's parents, they made the decision to take Felicity out of muggle school and have her tutored by a private teacher to get her magic under some semblance of control, considering it had bloomed so late in her adolescence.

Despite this outlet for Felicity's magic, it was clear that she needed some kind of institutional support to help her harness her magic, even after a year and a half of private tutoring. It simply wasn't enough. Thus began the plans to send Felicity to Hogwarts. Of course, sending Felicity to the Kahibah Magical Seminary would have been preferential, but widespread bushfire in New South Wales in 1956 and 1957 made it too dangerous to send her to school there, so plans were made to send her to Hogwarts as a transfer.  Richard Walker had a muggle sister living in Britain would could care for Felicity in the weeks before and after the school term, and act as her temporary guardian during the term. In the off-months, Felicity would simply come home, or attend Camp Loki.

Felicity was less keen on the idea. After all, she'd laid down her roots in Melbourne. She'd made friends and struggled through high school and was finally beginning to crack the code on how to be an adolescent. Relocating to rainy England, all the way across the world, was the last thing she wanted to do.
