Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Elsbeth Blaine

Birthday: 13 April 1944

Hometown: Edinburgh, Scotland, UK

Bloodline: Muggleborn

Magical Strength (pick one): Charms

Magical Weakness (pick one): Divination

Year (pick two): Fifth, Fourth

Biography:
Elsbeth Blaine was born in Edinburgh to two muggle parents. Her father, Gregory Blaine, is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Edinburgh. Her mother was a homemaker until her untimely death ten years ago of tuberculosis. This death made both father and daughter unbelievably close—something that Elsbeth has found stressful to manage while at Hogwarts separated from her father.

Beyond this tragedy, Elsbeth’s childhood was a relatively normal one. She often spent time at the University, which did draw odd looks as a girl, but her father very much wanted her to have a strong sense of learning. Her favorite place was the library, where she’d struggle with books too advanced for her little mind.

Her first sign of magic came about age 6 when Gregory brought her to Edinburgh Zoo. They were looking at the fish pond when Els spotted one she could see wasn’t moving. She called at it and tried to feed it, but nothing happened. The fish was dead. So afraid and triggered of her mother’s memory, she managed to unknowingly dislodge a few of the rocks at the side of the pond so as to create a resting place for the dead fish. The move was small enough her father could attribute it to the effects of a heavy Scottish rain.

When her Hogwarts letter arrived, the family was shocked and Gregory found it hard to believe magic existed. But if it did, he wanted his girl to learn it and so he let her attend the magical school. At Hogwarts, Elsbeth was quiet in her first few years, preferring to keep a small group of friends. She poured her efforts into her studies, just as she was done in muggle school, and she found herself exceling in Charms in particular while Divination was difficult. With her skill in Charms, she became interested in dueling, but continues to seek avenues to advance all her studies

Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: Ravenclaw

Personality:
Elsbeth tends to keeps to herself before she opens up to people. But once you have her trust, you have it forever. Patient and determined, she doesn't give up easily, especially on academic content. Although not traditionally artistic, she enjoys problem-solving and trying out new approaches to material and problems. While not particularly sporty, she enjoys coming out to support her peers at a quidditch match or a dueling match. She does enjoy adventure mostly because she likes investigating and finding out how things work. She'd pursue a quest through to its fullest danger if it meant that she learned something out of it. She is a team player, granted a quieter one, always looks out for those she's working with as best she can. She can be one track minded, however, and selfish in her pursuit of new information.

Appearance:
Elsbeth is fairly plain in her appearance. She does not take a lot of effort in the mornings, feeling that other things--like information--are far more important than beauty. As such, she wears a natural look. Her straight hair is a chestnut color and her eyes a bright blue. Her skin is a pale, perhaps described as 'fair' at best. Her body is long and lean, but not from exercise. It's more like occasionally skimping on food in favor of study sessions. Her nails are long and unvarnished. She wears her Hogwarts uniform well, always ensuring it is clean. Her casual wardrobe is mostly dresses and cardigans in earth tones. She enjoys scarves and knitted hats.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

Elsbeth did not enjoy the dungeons. They were cold and dark--clearly not ideal for studying, which requires light for proper reading. And yet she couldn't escape it entirely. The reality was that potions was held here, so creeping through the corridors was a requirement just for safe passage in the pursuit of classes.

She'd happened to hang back in the potions classroom late that day, wanting to ensure she'd absolutely gotten the properties of an ingredient correct in her notes. It was always easier for her to do this with the potion ingredient directly in front of her, where she observe its color, gleam, and shine. She'd built up enough of a relationship with the Potions professor by now that this was normal. Perhaps it was was selfish to over-stay in the classroom, but that was not her care.

By the time she left the classroom, the corridors were mostly empty. This made her steps much more audible than normal as she walked the path back up to a staircase, eager to return to her common room. She didn't particularly notice any odd low noises--that was just the way the dungeons sounded.

That is, until she rounded the corridor and heard someone pose a question out into the air. Something about Emma Birch? Elsbeth didn't know anyone named like that, but then she mostly kept to herself.

Soon, she noticed a figure: a young girl who looked absolutely petrified when her features came into focus. Elsbeth didn't like the idea of leaving her alone, so she approached her. "Pardon me. Are you all right?" she questioned, clutching her notebook to her chest. Hopefully, she would not cause additional fear in the young girl.
