She had been exactly what her mother wanted and the girl soaked up the attention that she received. She always had the frilliest of dresses and the best of everything, including love.
She had two older brothers, too; Harmon was five years older than her and Cephas was only two years older. She was closer to Cephas, not just because he was nearer in age to her, but also because he was a lot more fun than their serious older brother who always seemed grumpy when she was around.
Pretty, as her parents nicknamed her, loved her childhood. At least she did until she was seven and her baby brother Ephraim came into the world. As babies do, he needed more attention from their mum, so Pretoria felt cast aside by the woman who loved her so much. After that, the girl spent most of her time with her father. Even though she found his hobby of taxidermy quite disturbing, she had resolved to learn the art from him mostly so she could receive the attention and adoration that she knew she deserved, while Eph had their mother’s attention.
Being a Prothero came with certain responsibility, too. She had to have the perfect manners when out in public, and had to look impeccable as well. She attended Durmstrang Institute during her school years, and was well aware of the expectations that came with being a witch in such a well-known family. At some point in the future, she would be expected to settle down and continue the bloodline. Until that was forced upon her, though, she had no intention of that being her life.
While still residing at Prothero Castle, Pretoria found herself amused when her little brother was forced to change schools because he had been acting out. Theirs was not a friendly relationship – when their parents were not around, she picked on him relentlessly in an attempt to get him to act out in front of their parents.
Cruel, really, but Pretoria has mastered the art of manipulation and is proud of it. Being from such a well-to-do family definitely has its benefits.
Roleplay: You come across one of these posts on the site. Please select one & reply as your character:Option One - Amelia Nixon was many things, but she was never a pushover reporter that people could just usher away with a busy shuffle past. She was dedicated and eager to cut to the very middle of the current political tensions because she was Amelia Nixon and her articles would most certainly become front page material.
“Sir, please! It’s for the Prophet, how do you feel-“
Another one brushed passed her, the shuffling busy masses making their way through Diagon Alley for the lunchtime rush. This had been the best possible time to get people, but none of them were giving her anything to go with.
Only momentarily discouraged, the short red headed lady took a seat on a nearby bench. Her quill resting in her left hand and her notepad ready in the opposite hand. Amelia pouted, tapping the quill against her leg as she scanned the waves of people for somebody - anybody - who looked like they had something to say.
She had been dreaming of her name in bold print, Amelia Nixon: The Source of Today’s Tomorrow. She had been dreaming of the larger office and the secretaries that would fetch her the morning coffee and fetch her anything she needed. The VIP interviews and the most exclusive press passes. But all Amelia had was a page seventeen piece on the rising number of frogs in London.
Hardened by a day of no success, the reporter stood up and started to trod off down the alley. A loose stone on the cobble path caught her heel, sending the distraught girl toppling down to the ground.
“Merlin’s fog watch, my heel is broken! Help!” she yelled as she tried desperately to recover her shoe frantically in the middle of the Diagon Alley moving crowds.
Roleplay Response:Pretoria rarely had anywhere to rush off to, and today was no different. What was a Prothero girl to do with herself when she didn’t have to work and didn’t have to struggle? Yeah, some days she did get bored, but she also knew how good she had it. She was fortunate to have the family she had - despite all of its flaws.
She rolled her eyes when she heard a woman cry out about her heel being broken. Sometimes Pretty was nice, sometimes she wasn’t. It was always a mystery as to which way she would go in any scenario. Being bored today, however, she felt a bit spicier than normal.
She stopped and scanned the many people, looking for the woman in distress. When Pretoria finally spotted her, she stepped towards her not even worrying about the possibility of being run into by one of the many witches or wizards walking by.
Pretty looked down at the redhead and then over at her shoe that she was looking at. “I don’t know if I feel worse about the fact that you are so sad about that hideous thing, or that you had to wear it to begin with.”
