Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Byron Templeton 'Brick' Dumay

Birthday: 18 May, 1938

Hometown: Frizington, Cumbria originally, now Hogsmeade.

Bloodline:
Muggleborn / Halfblood / Pureblood / Unknown

Magical Strength (pick one):
Divination / Transfiguration / Charms / Conjuring & Summoning

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Divination / Transfiguration / Charms / Conjuring & Summoning

Year (pick two): 1st, 2nd.

Biography:
Brick received his nickname at birth; at 13lbs, 13oz.- and 26 inches long- he threatened to be the end of his mother from the start.  Abigail swore that the boy was part giant (there is no proof of that) and that she'd never have more children (not true- Brick has a little sister and a little brother).  His parents are loving, capable providers who raised him to as best as they could, despite his shortcomings.

'Brick' proved to be an apt name; he didn't begin to walk until age three or talk until almost five- and even then it was mostly monosyllabic.  His fine-motor skills were barely present; except when eating, his ability to grasp and manipulate things seemed like a daunting task for him.  And despite years of careful prompting and gentle prodding, he simply never spoke.  His first word, upon seeing his sister Brenda for the first time, was 'Yuck."  His parents were concerned that he might be mentally deficient.

It was discovered around age seven that Brick had an almost magical grasp of language, but rarely felt a need to speak- as if words were something too precious to waste.  Two Welsh wizards were talking to one another (in Welsh) about the duplicitous weather they'd been having, and he overheard their conversation.  After only a few short minutes of listening, he chimed in with a fully modulated (if short) reply, indicating a firm understanding of the morphology and syntax of the language.  A few hours later, when asked about what had happened, he shrugged his shoulders and gave a nondescript, "Dunno..."

[A Special Request will be made to keep and develop this ability if possible.  If this is not possible, it is an untrained magic that will fade away as he begins his Schooling.]

He is the strong, silent type- he has always been the biggest thing around, and expects to receive anything he puts his mind to- mostly because others don't have the ability to physically object.  When it comes to food, he can be quite selfish- which is one of the primary reasons for his girth.  For Brick, little else matters than what he can stuff down his gullet.

Brick might be considered a 'bully' if it weren't for his almost obsequious nature with those he has befriended.  He will take things without asking, without remorse, and often by force- but usually only if it benefits others or he was directed to.  His little sister used to take advantage of this, making him her muscle on the school grounds and her the veritable queen.  She said it, he did it- without fear or sense of self-preservation.  He didn't complain, either.

When their parents welcomed a third child into the household, Brick was sent to live with his Uncle Adaric 'Radish' Horner in Hogsmeade.  This was done for the child's safety; Brick decided that he didn't like the boy and tried stuffing him into the woodbox.  Twice.  In the past year, Brick has learned how to care for puffskein and has become somewhat adept at farm life.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

House Request: Gryffindor (only house I've never been in)

Personality: Brick is the quintessential minion- he will obey almost any direct order given to him.  His generally neutral expression hides a deep thinker and very attentive mind.  He doesn't talk much, often boiling down a conversation into as small a form as he can.  He doesn't like making eye contact- it is possible that he has some form of Autism.

When given a choice in a situation, he will most likely do nothing or act in his own self-interest- astute students will be able to take advantage of him easily.  Brick can come across as a dispassionate bully- as if the consequences of his actions don't matter to him.  In truth, he feels deeply for his friends and would do anything- even dangerous or endangering things- to keep their friendship.

Brick is a glutton, and is especially susceptible to dark-chocolate-covered caramels, or dark-chocolate-covered nuts, or dark-chocolate-covered anything really; but never chocolate by itself.

Appearance: Brick is very large for his age- both in height and girth.  He is exceptionally strong for what his soft exterior suggests.  He dresses simply with little sense of style.  Any buttons on his clothing must be buttoned; he has a habit of biting off or breaking buttons he does not want buttoned.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.
Option 1
He'd overheard.  He wasn't trying to and wouldn't have even cared except that it had turned into a dare- the girl was being goaded into looking for a ghost.  A ghost, mind, of a girl who had been murdered right here at the school, he'd heard.  The girl had, from his perspective, left with a certain bravado.

That bravado seemed to have left her step.

So, he'd followed her.  Not because she was pretty or helpless or in need or danger or needed protection.  He followed her because he was curious.  If she did find this murdered ghost, what would she do next?It perplexed him to know why people were compelled to do things on their own.  If those nasty girls upstairs had asked him, he would have told them 'no' straightaway.

Of course, if they had just told him to do it, he'd be right where she was.

"Hello!  Is Emma Birch here?"

She sounded scared.  The waver in her voice resonated with him- waves of emotion peeling off like layers of clothing.  If there was a ghost down here, she was in the wrong frame of mind to handle it alone, he reckoned.

He crept up next to her as quietly as he could- hopefully without a sound.  Stood there, patiently, until she noticed him.  He made no effort to make himself known.

He didn't want to scare her, after all.
