Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Sydney Lamont

Birthday: August 9th (update)

Hometown: Dunoon, Scotland

Bloodline: Pureblood

Magical Strength (pick one): Transfiguration

Magical Weakness (pick one): Conjuring & Summoning

Year (pick two): Fifth (Fourth)

Biography: Sydney Lamont is the runt of the Pureblood Lamonts; a prestigious line of wizards and witches of Scotland. Her upbringing was definitely not normal but she wouldn't have had it any other way. A square peg that didn't quite fit in the lives of her family, she was basically raised by the many house elves that took care of the grounds and chores. They were her best friends and she ran free left to her vivid imagination.

The transition to Hogwarts wasn't easy for that reason. Luckily, her natural cheerfulness and supportive nature endeared her to enough people. Sydney was always open to things, finding it difficult to say no to whatever others were trying to do. It landed her in trouble a few times, maybe more than a few, but she did not live for regrets. Plus, if she ever did, she'd go bother Mr. Clint about it.

Sydney is a metamorphmagus; a power that she was entirely unaware of until her time at Hogwarts. By this point, it was second nature to alter any part of her if she chose though the only person she truly showed this to was her best friend Spencer. It made skipping curfew a whole lot easier when you could change to those allowed to be out and about.

Most just assume she's just gifted at Transfiguration, which she was, but never goes out of her way to fully reveal the fact. People, she was told, might want to take advantage of it.

As for her day to day, she took to heart advice given to her by Mr. Clint on knowing where to invest her time properly. She made two grand boy mistakes already in her short time and therefore sunk into the comfort zone that was Spencer Callander; the boy who she'd saved with her first display of magic, the ever-present looming shadow to her sunshine, the sky blue to her brilliant helio in the sky. When she wasn't going on runs or swims she was usually with the Ravenclaw boy, hand in hand in defiance to the world's expectations.

(Or so she thinks...)

Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: Hufflepuff

Personality: Sunny and cheerful, Syd can seldom find it within herself to not find a reason to smile. Even if forced to fake it, the spots are few and far between as she's drawn to whimsy like a moth to a flame. She loves the outdoors, dancing with or without music, and relying on her innate magic. She has an infectious, bubbly laugh that could be heard often, namely at those she doesn't know very well. She is below average in her studies so has to try much harder for things to sink in.

Appearance: Her build is lithe, standing at a whole 158 cms. Her hair is naturally a dark, chocolatey brown but keeps it light these days. When you have the power to change your appearance on a whim, you tend to enjoy the imperfections that make you. Syd believes that wholly after a term trying to fake it, though there is a curvature to her body she's still getting used to. Her eyes are anyone's guess, but she likes a certain shade of hazel shared by another Hufflepuff.

How your character kept up with their studies: Relative to how she had been performing, Syd has kept afloat by better managing her time. That meant taking a step back from extra-curriculars and, sadly, much of her time playing house elf in the kitchens. She's still below average in most courses, Transfiguration being the sole exception.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.
You come across one of these posts on the site. Please select one & reply as your character. Remember, you can only roleplay your own character's actions, not Evangeline's or Hugh's.

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

Option 1 Response:

Goosebumps ran through her skin like a field of sunflowers swaying towards the sun. Sydney had left the underground swimming pool without fully drying herself. She was running late to her study date and obviously lost track of time doing something fun instead of burying her face in a boring book.

Her bare footsteps barely made a sound bouncing off the balls of her feet. She wouldn't have heard it over the chattee of her teeth. A soggy orange towel was wrapped around her like a toga, arms crossed over themselves. It was then she decided to start to sprint until it seemed to draw a squeak from someone even smaller than her.

"Emma Birch?" she asked, face twisting in confusion. Sydney didn't know any Emma. It was the sort of name that would have registered a face she'd swear. Shaking her head, she gave the girl a quick glance as a comforting smile crossed her lips.

"If she's in Slytherin, you won't be able to get into their common room. Would you like help heading back?"

Name: Sydney Lamont

Birthday: August 18th

Hometown: Dunoon, Scotland

Bloodline: Pureblood

Magical Strength (pick one): Transfiguration

Magical Weakness (pick one): Divination

Year (pick two): First! (Then Second)

Biography:

I miss you all! I hope you haven't missed me too much. Belty always told me a house elf can never have free time because there is always something to do. Now without me there, I wish that to be true.

I'm having a good time at camp! There are so many cool things here! Whenever I'd play in the backyard and play like I was a queen of Egypt or climbing the mountains in search of dragons, the camp here actually made it real! There are things you wouldn't believe and now I think Hogwarts is going to be just as great!

I know I said that I'd find an excuse to come back. Mommy didn't want me coming because of my condition even if Daddy told her I had to. But, I really think that this is a good thing. Everyone else in my family came here for school. I would have to one day. But, I don't want you all to worry. You're still my best friends. Jago and Belty and Mono and Risky and Frump.

I know that is going to change. I've heard it from Eoin and Eunice and Mommy. I'm not a house elves. They aren't the same as people. But you don't have to be a person to be nice and I don't think anyone in my family has been as nice to me as you guys. I don't want any of us to be sad even if being sad is how I feel. You will always have each other. I need to find my pack.

So, on my first birthday away from home, I wanted to let you know that I'll be okay and that you'll be okay too. I'll be back for Christmas and Easter and Summer! Maybe I'll come back with a new cool wand to show you! Or even a broom!

Option 2:

"Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

"Are you sure you don't need my help?" she asked incredulous.

Sydney hadn't been staring. She'd been pit here for a while. The young girl had been walking the grounds, bored and hoping to run into one of her friends or the off-chance that she'd find an exciting moment she could tell Eoin about in her letters. No older brother would want to read about her schooling or how hard it was to fly on a broom, especially not one that was already more than a year removed from it.

She wanted to have a tomes-worth of stories to tell them back home. Ones that would not make them think this was a mistake. What she got instead was her attention fully stolen by a titanic sneeze that assaulted her ears and a row of ruined flowers, pulled out with the carelessness one would unwrap a Christmas present with.

"Your face looks like you just ate an eating chili pepper."

It was true. His face was puffy and red and runny. Syd knew the look because a dare at dinner had her looking the same way. She crossed her arms across her chess. Her thin, sharp chin jutted out as her lips tightened into a thin, unconvincing line.

"You shouldn't be out here ruining all the flowers. People try very hard to maintain it." By people she meant the house elves. If she thought she had a lot of house elves, Hogwarts could be thought of as a house elf town with how many there were. There were more than enough to see that every student's needs were met. Well, except hers to have playdates with. That wasn't something the elves seemed to do here.

"Can you fix those? I would but I'm only a first year. All I can do is write my name in sparkles and turn my shoes into a different color." His problem, the reason the older, sneezing boy was sick-faced and ornery, didn't even register to her as something to ask.

Biography: (100 words minimum.)

She was feisty from birth.

According to her father, Sydney was worth a gruff frown and the attempt to shake his head before resigning himself to leave her upbringing to a combination of her siblings and mother. With a few whiskeys in him, he would have been overheard by his wife to say that she was failing in her duties.

Lindsay Lamont never thought she would have a third child. Her twins had been an ordeal from the onset, a bickering back and forth that required her to look after and keep from infuriating their father. It was a full time job and it was thought to be reaching its conclusion as the pair were nearing entering school. Sydney was born before that could happen and she would find her pregnancy to be a curse from God-- an absent husband, two willful cheerful, and a household that still carried the ghost of Flannagan's first marriage.

Sydney's childhood seemed to be left to her house elves mainly. Her mother joined the St. Mungo's staff when she was learning how to sound out words and her father was forever preoccupied by the business of the family. By then, her siblings were already in school by the time she was old enough to socialize and holidays themselves became a novelty where the family was actually together.

As one might expect, she became an attention seeker during those years.

At five, she hid in her father's office underneath his desk and surprised him with several important parchments glued to her arms like wings of a bird. "Papa, I'm a bird!" did not go over well and the room became magically-sealed ever since.

At six, she took to a pair of scissors and chopped off all of her hair to look like her brother when he was returning from Hogwarts for Easter holiday. Her mother was furious, gave her a hair-growing potion that made Sydney nauseous and have her grow, along with a head of hair that went down to her knees, eyebrows thick as raccoons that covered half of her face. "Mama, you made me a beaver!" went over even less well. She had had thicker eyebrows ever since.

At seven, at the provocation of her older brother, Sydney started using her sister's makeup as art supplies. Her first great piece was an abstract painting of her system with her newly-found art supplied, drawn on the canvas of her mirror. When she woke up, Envy Lamont took the reigns in "child-rearing" and was excused by their father for what followed. The sisters were never close, and less-so since.

For her ninth birthday, Eoin had her attempt fly on a broom for the first time. It ended with her falling and breaking several bones in her body. He would say that he never heard anyone cry-laugh like that before. It was hauntingly beautiful.

Roleplay:
Reply as your character to the following:

Godric Park.

Overhead, the sky was a crisp blue, for once clear of the ever-pervasive spongy clouds and rain. The sun was a lemony-yellow presence, high in the Eastern sky, and in front of it zipped three broomsticks in a straight line, or something very like one. One... two..... three... the boys passed, their shouts of excitement echoing as they chased the snitch, a tiny shimmer reflecting the sunlight.

Far below was another, much smaller broomstick.

It trugged along the ground, hugging close to it like a sluggish choo choo train and occasionally shuttering in protest. This was because said stick was currently being occupied by a very small girl who was tugging upward on the front of it with all her might, trying to coax it into doing what it had been expressly designed NOT to do.

"John, I said wait up!" The tiny girl squealed, giving the broomstick another tug.

Begrudgingly, it drifted upward a foot, and then sank, depositing the troublesome girl safely on the ground. Janey Hurst was not pleased. In a huff, she hopped off the toy safety broom, grabbing it firmly and thrusting it handle first into the turf.

Her brother was such a beast. He NEVER let her play! She folded her arms, seething blue eyes fixing on another figure nearby.  "You!" She barked, much more sharply than she meant to.

"...Do you want to play?"

Roleplay Response:

"Do I!"

She knows it was meant to be a question, and the way it was posed dictated as much, but Sydney was already rushing to the other girl and her tossed toy broom before she was ever given room to be rejected. It came out as a partial skip, almost a gallop, so she was beside her seemingly as soon as the words reached her.

"I'm Sydney!" Rather than extend a hand in greeting, or offer any more questions, Sydney was reaching for the small broom. She had been left at the park for twenty minutes while her mother was attending to other, more important matters. After running around in a circle until the world was rightly spinning and she was close to tripping over herself, Sydney had eyed the girl from afar and her attempt to reach the older boy's flying overheard in tight, birdlike formation.

She could relate. Her brother had felt so bad about the first time she was let to go on a broom that he treated her less like an equal and more like the difference in their age would suggest and Sydney HATED it.

"Would you let me ride your broom? You can try to catch me!" Her blue-gray eyes leveled on the other girl, smiling fiercely at the possibility of this game, although she was probably getting ahead of herself. Most of the Scottish-born pureblood's time with other kids her age was during fancy parties where she'd be forced to remain a docile shell of herself under threat of never participating in them again. She didn't have a clue as to why her mother and father felt so worried at what she might do if left to her own devices.

It made these moments when she was out and about, free of her house elves and the confined of their home, cherished.
