Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Sebastian Vane

Birthday: 17 April 1961

Hometown: London, England

Bloodline: Halfblood

Magical Strength: Transfiguration

Magical Weakness: Divination

Year: 1st, 2nd

Biography:

[GREY]

Euphemia Vane’s features were wan, the colour leached from her skin.

It was the necessity of having to ask for something—of being beholden to someone else, even her own father—as much as the morning sickness.

The familiar tenor of his voice bade her enter, and Effy did, one hand clasped firmly in the other to keep them from shaking.

“Sebastian, I—” She drew in a soldiering breath. “I need your help.”

[BLUE]

She’d never dreamed of becoming a mother—had scarcely even given it a thought, the same way she’d never imagined Quidditch stardom or dragon handling or the mundanity of what her life might have been without magic.

It wasn’t something she wanted, not as he grew within her, settling into place beneath her ribcage, not as she’d felt the first pangs of labor or in the hours since, spent in a stark, spotless room with no one whose name she actually knew.

She hadn’t wanted to be a mother, but she wanted him, she realized abruptly, a fact which felt suddenly as tenuous as the thin skin of the baby’s chest, perfectly still amidst the chaos surrounding him.

Finally, finally, the baby drew a breath.

[RED]

Sebastian’s screaming reached a pitch she’d never quite heard, sending a lance of panic shooting through Effy’s already-frayed nervous system. Surely there had to be something terribly wrong for him to cry like that—for his face to be so flushed and pinched, for his tiny fists to be so tightly clenched.

“Hush. Hush, Bast,” she murmured, for lack of knowing anything better to say, entirely unaccustomed to helplessness, to not knowing what to do.

He drew in a breath, stilling, and Effy felt a brief flood of relief. Then he began to scream again.

[YELLOW]

The summer sun shone in the sky, spilling over Sebastian’s hair—a shade so like her own—and turning it golden.

“This,” she said, “is Bast.”

“And this,” she added, lifting him just slightly, “is Tallulah.”

[GREEN]

The grass flattened under his footsteps as Sebastian raced towards his namesake, his face splitting into a brilliant grin at the sight of the toy broom being proffered with a flourish.

Effy hadn’t even reached her father’s side before her son was already astride it, pushing off from the ground to hover just above the dew-soaked field, as if it was the hundredth time and not the first. The soles of his trainers were green—grass-stained—and something in Effy’s chest fractured.

[BLACK]

The owl that delivered the letter was white, the thick, creamy parchment of the envelope just a shade or two deeper, and the familiar wax seal a deep red.

But the ink emblazoned across Sebastian’s acceptance letter was ebony, and even though she’d known it was coming—known for the past eleven-odd years, and the nine months preceding it—the stark crispness of those words was a reality she’d not yet fully accepted.

Sebastian’s smile grew into a delighted laugh, and Effy wrapped him into her arms, drawing her fingers through a tousled mop of curls that still felt baby-soft.

She took a breath.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

House Request: Ravenclaw

Personality:
Sebastian is more exuberant than his mother and grandfather, but equally thoughtful and precocious—quick to laughter but quick to reason through a problem, too, or to concoct an on-the-spot scheme. If he has an overriding characteristic, it’s curiosity. He expects great things to happen to him, in the manner of an eleven-year-old boy accustomed to playing knights and dragons, but in the manner of the blood running through his veins, too. He is, after all, his mother’s son.

Appearance:
Sebastian has light brown hair that tends to curl, and is haphazardly out-of-place more often than not. He has his mother’s hazel eyes and a dimpled grin that’s entirely unlike that of anyone else in his known family. He has a small frame for his age and a bit of roundness yet in his cheeks, as if he hasn’t quite crossed over the threshhold from childhood.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.

Roleplay Response:

Sebastian had been following his curiosity since his first day at the castle, so the dungeons were already familiar ground. Today it was less the location than the situation that had struck him—a dare was ripe material for his interest, as he’d found people particularly unpredictable when it came to being confronted with something they felt beholden to that they wouldn’t otherwise undertake.

Simply put, he wanted to know what Evangeline would do.

He didn’t know Evangeline, but he knew her type—had recognize the hesitance, but also the determination in her steps as she traversed the staircase leading down to the dungeons.

Sebastian followed, at a distance.

He’d not intended to make his presence known at all, but he’d been uncharacteristically clumsy these past few weeks—hadn’t even noticed that the tome was about to tip out of his satchel until it had landed on the flagstone floor with a thump, startling the girl into an abrupt stop.

Sebastian sighed, and stepped out of the shadows. He’d already interfered with the experiment—even if he stayed hidden, his mere presence had already influenced Evangeline’s actions.

“Afraid not,” he answered with a shrug. “Sebastian Vane. You can call me Bast, if you like.”
