Nael Al-Azma:

Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Nael Laith Antony

Birthday: May 23rd 1960

Hometown: Dover, England

Bloodline: Halfblood

Magical Strength (pick one): Charms

Magical Weakness (pick one): Divination

Year (pick two): 2nd (or 3rd )

Biography:
It was a rather rainy Thursday and Nael was sitting behind the cashier counter in his father’s grocery store. He’d come here right after school, just like every day and since then only a handful of customers had come and gone. He was so bored, that he had even finished his homework already. His fingers played piano on the counter and he heard his father working in the back. Normally he would help restock, but today had been so slow that it wasn’t necessary. Nael was about to ask his father if he really needed him to be there, when the bells above the door chimed.

Nael’s eyes wandered to the door and mustered the man who had entered. His coat was very long. Nael thought it looked more like a robe than a coat and it had an odd color. In any case it was dripping wet, as was the rest of the man. He had dark hair like Nael had, and it was hanging in his face, so that Nael could only see half it. For a moment the man just stood there, but then he came over to the counter. His eyes were dark and serious.

“Where is Laith? Is he here?”, his voice was hoarse, but still rather loud. Nael stood up and looked back to see if his father had noticed the new customer and his request. “Father?” Nael called, but there was no answer. “I’m sorry, Sir. He seems to be out at the moment. Who are you?” The man just looked at him and to Nael it looked like he was somehow surprised. “Father? You must be Nael then!”

---

It had been several weeks since that day at the store and Nael still couldn’t believe what had happened after. Apparently, there was a world out there, that he had no idea existed. Even more so, his own parents were, or rather used to be, a part of it. The boy had no real idea what it meant to be a witch or in his case a wizard, but it sounded fascinating. Nael couldn’t understand why his parents never said a word about it. His mother had shown him her wand and made a few sparks with it, but that was it. His father had altogether refused to show him anything. Only his uncle Sanaan, the man who’d come into the store on that rainy Thursday, had explained things to him and had introduced him into the world of magic.

It took a lot of convincing, and his uncle had to threaten his parents into taking Nael away. But in the end, they had given in, and it was decided that he would go to a school in Scotland called Hogwarts. His magical training was about to begin and Nael couldn’t wait to see a world beyond his imagination.

You come across one of these posts on the site. Please select one & reply as your character. Remember, you can only roleplay your own character's actions, not Evangeline's or Hugh's.

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

Roleplay Response:

Nael loved to explore the castle. It had so many corridors and stairs and hallways, that he never got tired of finding new things and talking portraits. Today he had found the stairs to the dungeons. He’d seen a few Slytherins going down here yesterday, and so today he ventured down himself. It was rather dark and the air smelled funny, but that didn’t bother the boy.

As he wandered about, he thought that it was rather boring down here. Not many portraits were hanging and it looked like you could get lost rather quickly if you weren’t careful. Nael had no idea if anyone actually looked for lost students in this place. In any case, he wasn’t willing to find out.

The hallway ended and he had the option to go left or right. Both ways looked the same, as did the way he’d come. Panic slowly rose in his belly, as he realized he’d already lost his way. It was probably best to go back the way he came. Yes, retrace your steps! That seemed to be the most logical thing to do.

Then he heard a voice and froze.

It had been faint, but then he heard it again. This time louder.

Nael thought it sounded like a girl looking for someone else. It came from the right corridor and so he took all the courage he could muster, and walked in that direction. If there was someone there, she maybe knew the way out of here.

Nael found the owner of the voice a little bit into the hallway and it was indeed a girl. For a quick moment he stopped to think what he was going to say to her. Should he admit he was lost? Play it cool? Nael wasn’t sure, but he didn’t want anyone laughing about him getting lost. This kind of news travelled fast in this school. He decided to play it safe and if she happened to know the way, he’d just go with her. “Hi, I’m not who you’re looking for, but I can help you find her, if you want?”
