Biography:
Piper Eden is no stranger to moving around. If she wasn’t being shuffled around from orphanages and foster families, she was running away on her own accord, sometimes spending weeks at a time away from whoever was destined to take care of her at the time before being rounded up again and brought back to ‘The Home.’  Some people would say wasn’t fair for a young girl to have such a lack of stability.

But for Piper, it was just the way it was.

Even in her deepest memories, Piper has trouble drawing up an image of her parents, who died or left or abandoned her when she was very small. She can see them. In the one photograph she has of them. But she can’t see who they really were. Sometimes she wonders why she hold on to their keepsakes: the photograph, the bracelet, the ragged baby blanket. But she can’t let them go. Even though they let her go.

Piper lived in the muggle world for most of her life. Up until she turned 10, when a professor at Salem Institute came to tell her that she was, in fact, a witch, and that if she wanted to she could attend their school. Maybe it was a dream or a fantasy, but she took it. What else did she have to lose?

Her status as ‘Muggleborn’ proved difficult at times, but she was able to work with it. She had an issue with thievery —it was difficult being so poor and not having nice things was often draining— and it, and a handful of other misdeeds, eventually led to her expulsion from Salem at the end of her Third Year.

In 1952 a caring and patient Foster Mother, and witch, Naomi Jackson, took Piper under her wing, though Piper still resisted and ran away often. Street smart and crafty Piper was far too used to taking care of herself. But Naomi, who had British roots, moved her to England where she homeschooled her for her Fourth year and had Piper do community service through the Social Reconstruction Committee with the hopes that good behavior would gain the girl acceptance into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the next year.

Piper was leery, but she played nice.

For the time being.

As August 1952 came to a close, Piper began staying at the Hogsmeade Children's Home where Naomi checked in on her often. But by the time November of 1952 rolled around, Naomi had to return to America to care for a sick Aunt but Piper opted to stay at the children’s home where she continued her homeschooling and community service.

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

Piper Eden wasn’t afraid of the dungeons even if they weren’t her favorite place in the world. She’d lived in creepier and less comfortable places than the dark and dank underground chambers beneath the castle. Her biggest problem with them was the fact that they were underground, which made sense because where else were you going to put a dungeon? It made her uncomfortable. But not scared.

After a brief tour of an abandoned classroom (—in which she’d found several perfectly good quills, a pencil and a used notebook that was filled less with class notes and more with class gossip—) she’d decided to take a walk around the grounds. Stretch her legs. Breathe some air that wasn’t likely to coat her lungs in mold…

So she trekked through the dungeons, willing her feet on. But she wasn’t alone, it seemed.

“Hello! Is Emma Birch here?”

Rounding a corner, she eyed the shouting girl, raising an eyebrow, “Uh,” she said, tucking the quills into her ever present back pack, “That the girl that snuffed it?” She didn’t know the full story or myth or whatever, but she knew the name.

A smirk curled on her lips as she hitched her bag onto her shoulder, “Haven’t seen her, but I heard that if ya’ say her name three times down here,  she’ll fly outta that painting,” she motioned vaguely to one behind the girl, “And BAM!—” her voice carried impressively, “She’ll steal your soul and add it to her collection. Ya feelin’ lucky, short stuff?”
