Biography:
William and Fiona Pryke married right out of Hogwarts and three years later brought into this world their son and heir, Benjamin Pryke.

His childhood was as expected, his rearing impeccable, and at eleven-years they realised he was everything they wanted in a son.

Everything except a Wizard.

Exactly nine months later, Cillian Pryke was born, his entire life already shaped beyond his control.

Benjamin the Squib was shuffled aside. Forgotten. Sent alone to Muggle boarding school to carve out something from the ugly remains.

Cillian received the same impeccable rearing as Benjamin in addition to all the overcompensation guilt could afford, his parents thinking themselves failures, responsible in some way for the fate-worse-than-death that cost them their eldest son. Determined to reverse their fortunes.

Had he been more than a child he would have sensed the climate of fear and doubt looming like a storm cloud, not only over his eleventh birthday but every single day leading up to it. He would have learned the difference, then if not before, between happiness and relief. And he would have realised how close he had always been to the razor’s edge.

As a teen, exposed to Hogwarts and left unsupervised at social functions, the truth began to trickle past his defences, the name Benjamin haunting him again and again, and on the eve of his Sixth Year at Hogwarts he confronted them with it all, years of painful endeavour exposing the rotten truth at the core of his upbringing.

But they weren’t sorry. Not anymore. Not even burdened by the truth.

Cillian, their only son, was proof that the choices they made were right and morally justified, for the good of everyone concerned, and that to cling to the ghost of Benjamin Pryke was to disgrace all Prykes who came before him.

Despite Cillian’s objections, that was the end of the conversation, and the next morning they waved him off to Hogwarts, not a care in the world.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.
Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

Roleplay Response:

Being unable to finish a single sentence without his brain melting into goo was to Cillian a reliable indication that the common room was a little too busy, overstuffed with mewling first years who had managed to get through more hands of exploding snap than they had brain cells between them.

The dungeon corridors were rather more reliable in that respect, and even the tip-tip-tap of the slime-ridden ceiling was practically musical in comparison, but the quiet–and his bloody sentence–was soon interrupted, some snotty little ghost-hunter bored of their exploding snap, her trembling tones quiet but not nearly quiet enough.

Merlin’s Beard—are you that bloody lonely you’ve gotta’ start bothering the dead?”

Cillian stood, dusting himself off, his piercing green eyes glittering with equal parts curiosity and irritation as they peered around the dungeon’s shadowy corridors, not a soul in sight.

“Emma Birch isn’t here,” he said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

“And I’m starting to envy her.”
