Name: Serena Yukimura

Birthday: December 30, 1950

Hometown: Bath, England

Bloodline: Muggleborn

Magical Strength: Charms

Magical Weakness: Transfiguration

Year: Year 1 (1st choice) or Year 2

Biography:
Seren Yukimura was your typical kid who just enjoyed playing outside and living the life of a child who had no worries. Sure, his family had lived through a rough time. If the stories his parents told him about why he didn’t have much family left was anything to go by, it was a tragedy that left his family reduced to only the three of them. Both of his parents were orphaned after WWII, only meeting up eleven years ago by chance. Seren’s mother immediately became pregnant with him and the three lived peacefully in Japan until recently when his father’s past came chasing after them. They had to run. Away from Asia. England seemed to be the best place for them...being in a place no one knew them. No relatives. No friends. No one. They would be brand new to this environment and living in a place where they weren’t on top of another family so close by to see or witness their son’s...strange accidents. Yes, Seren started having these small “accidents” when he was about four years old, placing things that were out of his reach into his mother’s shopping cart at the store or making his toys fly in the local park when no one else would play with him. Of course, the young lad didn’t know what he was doing. Neither did his parents. They all just knew that he was special and knew that if someone found out about him, he would become a test subject like those people in Seren’s mother’s Sci-Fi books. Either way, between Seren’s accidental magic, something the Yukimura’s didn’t know about yet (because all they knew was that Seren had accidents), and the Yakuza (Japanese gang/organized crime syndicate. You don’t want to mess with them) chasing after the boy’s father, it was clarified that they would have to relocate. The UK was where they chose to rest and reside for the rest of their days...at least until a new problem arised. A year after they escaped Japan, when Seren was six years old, his younger brother, Tomo, would be born.

Shortly before Seren’s eleventh birthday something strange came about while he was relaxing in his backyard under a tree. An owl flew down to him, in the daytime, with an envelope in its hands. A strange occurrence indeed as owls were nocturnal animals. They shouldn’t be out in the day time and they surely shouldn’t be delivering mail. But here this one was. Looking at the writing on the front, the neat and cursive handwriting, Seren would see his name written and read through the letter, his eyes lighting up in excitement as he saw his name, the reason for the letter, and a signature at the bottom of the short, yet detailed message that was delivered to him. Running into the house, he quickly went to tell his parents that he wasn’t a weirdo and that he wasn’t strange. He was proudly explaining to them that he had magic and that he was a wizard! That was why he was able to do all of those crazy things!

It was later that week that a visitor came to the Yukimura household and explained everything that the letter had to the family because, as was usually the case with Muggle-Born children, their parents didn’t believe in magic until they saw it. Seren would eagerly get his parents approval to attend the boarding school in the coming Fall semester and would start his journey to become a wizard as great as Merlin himself!

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

House Request: Ravenclaw (but will allow the hat to sort me so long as it's not Gryffindor)

Personality:
Seren enjoyed a lot of his parent’s culture’s favored dishes, including certain sush, but having been raised in the UK for the last few years, he has learned to love the foods of his new culture as well. He enjoyed reading, listening to music on his record player, and going on adventures in his neighborhood with his Muggle friends. But the poor kid was afraid of insects of any kind. They were just plain creepy and most of them didn’t even have a purpose in this world! His main dislikes were snobby kids or adults who felt that because they were much older than he was that they were always correct. Other than that, Seren was a pretty happy kid who enjoyed his time reading in the sun. Sometimes he would even tinker with some of the broken items in the house, finding out a way to fix them in a way that his father couldn’t.

He was also quite good at beating others in a game of chess, except for his mother who was just amazing at the game. He got ahead of her with solving riddles though, so there was that plus factor. Wittiness and charm was definitely a factor for Seren as he had managed to get himself and sometimes his friends out of trouble while in school. There was one time where he made a bet with his year four teacher in order to get his friends out of trouble. If he could solve the riddle, they would get off scot free. If he couldn’t, then they would take whatever punishment the school doled out. Seren managed to solve the riddle faster than the teacher could even blink. But he could never get this charm to work on his parents. Thankfully, his parents allowed him to be more independent and pushed for him to be an individual more than anything.

Appearance:
Seren is short for his age, about 4'8 for a young eleven year old boy, but he knew that he would grow eventually. Brown hair, dark brown, almond-shaped eyes, and a small raised scar running from his left ear to the corner of his mouth that he received one day after falling into a creek and onto a small rock. The scar would usually cause some problems with some girls in his Muggle school, as they always thought he was a "bad boy", but he had hoped that he would find acceptance  at Hogwarts.

Strange as it may seem, he loved wearing button down shirts with jeans or trousers. He was just comfortable in the clothes. But though the semi formal wear was his go-to, he could also be seen wearing a T-shirt and shorts in the hotter months or when he was going outside to play rough with his friends. He had to keep his good clothes neat, you know?

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.
You come across one of these posts on the site. Please select one & reply as your character. Remember, you can only roleplay your own character's actions, not Evangeline's or Hugh's.

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

Seren was down wandering the dungeons as he explored the new school he was residing in. It would be his first time away at school and away from home, but he was enjoying himself so far. Homesickness hadn’t kicked in yet, which meant that he wasn’t going to be held up in his common room crying for him mum or dad. Looking through all of the nooks, crannies, and alcoves of the dank and damp dungeons, Seren decided to sit in one of the many alcoves that had a strange yet intriguing portrait hung within that he just couldn’t seem to take his eyes off of. The picture itself wasn’t dark, but it was almost as if it were a moving picture of the black lake from outside. Who would manage to get a picture of it from underwater though? That was absolutely curious, now wasn’t it? Every so often within the picture, Seren might have seen a tentacle of something swim by, but he couldn’t make out if it were the Giant Squid or something else. But it didn’t matter.

The lake was peaceful to look at even from down in the dungeons. Maybe tomorrow after class he would go down to the lake and sit nearby as the sun set while he did his homework. But for now, this was nice. And where he thought he was alone in the dungeons, he quickly realized that he wasn’t alone. A timid, yet loud call sounded throughout the dungeon, bouncing off of the walls and Seren became intrigued as to who else would be down in these damp walls. Would this other student bother him or cause him trouble? He only wanted to make friends, but just in case, he pulled out his wand.

Seren didn’t know many spells, but he had learned how to cast the Dancing Feet Spell pretty early on and if it worked, he would be able to get away safely. When the voice called out for an ‘Emma Birch,’ Seren titled his head to the side and walked to where the voice was coming from, only to be met by a girl in black robes with the Gryffindor symbol attached to it.

“I am not sure who Emma Birch is. She isn’t here. But my name is Seren. Seren Yukimura. What brings you down here?” He asked politely and curiously while also staying on guard.

He had hoped that the girl was friendly. He would feel bad casting a jinx at a girl, especially one that looked so scared as the one before her. He didn’t blame her though. Being a Gryffindor in the snake pit had to be entirely scary. Seren heard stories about the two houses fighting one another or constantly jinxing one another. They  were quite...brutal. Or so it seemed. Either way, the young boy hoped that he and this girl could be friends after this encounter.

Hi Seren!

Let me start out by saying that I absolutely love Seren and his unique background! However, there are a few details which will need to be addressed before your application can be accepted.

First, if your're hoping for Seren to be a first year as your first choice, his birthdate is one year off. He would have been born in 1949 rather than 1950. You can take a look at our handy birth year guide for reference.

Second, in your role play sample, you state that Seren knows how to use the 'dancing feet spell'. As per our Magical Rules this spell (Tarantallegra) requires fourth year levels. Even with Charms as his strength, as a first year, Seren would only have a Charms level of 2 and thus would be unable to pull off such a spell. Please either remove the reference to this spell or choose another. For example, Locomotor Mortis or Locomotor Wibbly might achieve similar results!

Once you've made the required changes, please repost your entire revised application as a response to this thread and we'll be happy to take another look! I know we have quite a few rules and it might be a lot to take in, so if you're ever unsure about anything, please don't hesitate to reach out.
I put my armour on, show you how strong I am
I put my armour on, I'll show you that I am

Hi Seren,

Thank you for making those changes, those all look good now!

There's just one more thing we'll need you to edit before we can get you accepted. You mention that Seren receives his Hogwarts letter via owl post and that someone comes to the house to explain his magical abilities later that week. As per HP canon:
Quote
When Muggle-born witches and wizards reach the age of eleven in the British wizarding community, their Hogwarts acceptance letters are delivered in person by a member of the staff, instead of by owl post

This means that Seren wouldn't receive his letter by owl post and that the visitor explaining his abilities would be the first time Seren was made aware of the explanation for his magical abilities/Hogwarts. You'll need to edit your biography to reflect this.

Once you've made the required change, please repost your entire revised application below, and we'll be more than happy to take another look. Thanks!

The UK was where they chose to rest and reside for the rest of their days...at least until a new problem arised. A year after they escaped Japan, when Seren was six years old, his younger brother, Tomo, would be born.

Shortly after Seren’s eleventh birthday something strange came about while he was relaxing on the tree swing his backyard under a tree. It was a little after the new year and still cold outside, but he didn’t mind. The cold never truly bothered him. His mother came to collect him and bring him into the house, saying that there was a strange looking person in their living room that wanted to speak to them, but mainly addressed that they wished to speak with Seren. Curiosity and a bit of wariness took over the lad, but he still went with his mother back into the house. A tall woman stood in his living room answering the rapid fire questions of Seren’s younger brother with a smile. The first thing Seren thought to look for was a weapon, but nothing was in the woman’s hand other than a neat looking envelope that she handed over to the little boy who took the proffered paper. Looking at the writing on the front, the neat and cursive handwriting, Seren would see his name written before opening and reading through the letter. His eyes lit up in excitement as he saw his name, the reason for the letter, and a signature at the bottom of the short, yet detailed message that was delivered to him. Excitement still coursing through him, he turned to his parents and expressed that he knew that he wasn’t a weirdo! That he was a wizard and that was why these strange things kept happening around him. When his parents still didn’t believe him, the stranger in the room pulled out a stick and said some strange words while pointing at their coffee table, making it dance wildly. The woman then pointed toward the fireplace and a red light came from her stick before hitting the cold logs sitting there and those were now on fire too! Seren and his brother watched with wide-eyed fascination and a large grin on their faces while their parents were quite shocked. Seren’s mother sat down numbly while his father went to grab some water for the two of them. It was true then. Magic was real and Seren was a wizard.

It was some time later that the same visitor came to the Yukimura household again to take Seren to buy his school books, uniform, and other things he may need while at his new boarding school. The Fall semester would be starting soon and he was just eager to begin this new journey of learning how to be the best wizard he could ever be!

There was one time where he made a bet with his year four teacher in order to get his friends out of trouble. If he could solve the riddle, they would get off scot free.

The lake within the portrait was peaceful to look at even if it were in the dank and dark dungeons.

Seren didn’t know many spells, but he knew how to wave his wand and make sparks come out. If that distraction worked, he would be able to get away safely. When the voice called out for an ‘Emma Birch,’ Seren tilted his head to the side and walked to where the voice was coming from, only to be met by a girl in black robes with the Gryffindor symbol attached to it.

How did you find us?:

A friend of mine introduced me to this website after applying for a character herself. I have no other characters here (yet) but this website seems to be a lot of fun and stress free.
