Biography:
Rowan Bartholomew Foxglove was born to Orson and his second wife, Cara, on an unusually clear night in November. Though the boy arrived an entire week early the birth was a calm affair, with several Manx locals joining in the celebrations as Orson welcomed his eldest son into the world. When morning broke Cara drifted into a peaceful sleep as Orson’s eldest daughter kept an eye on the new arrival.
By the time he was a toddler Rowan Bartholomew had made way for Robbie, courtesy of his older sister Willow. Once she started calling him the shortened version, the rest of the family simply followed suit. In those early days she doted on the little boy, allowing him to be her constant companion. Though she had been an only child for so long, she didn’t mind sharing the limelight with her dark-eyed brother. Despite having different mothers, the two siblings were startlingly similar. This made it easy for Willow to take Robbie under her wing, making the two siblings inseparable.
It was two years before Cara fell pregnant again. Alder was also born in the spacious country house, though Orson insisted on accompanying both mother and child to Onchan for observation shortly after. The birth had left Cara dangerously anaemic, a condition that finally claimed her life three years later as she gave birth to Holly, the final member of the Foxglove family.
Though Orson was suddenly alone in taking care of four children, he remained strong. For years after, he was both father and mother to the brood. He earned enough to keep the roof over their heads and left the day-to-day chores to the housekeeper. By this time Willow had completed her NEWTs and though she passed comfortably, she chose to return to the Isle of Man rather than continue with her studies in London. Robbie grew into a fun-loving boy that never tired of the enchantments the island held. Though he remained remarkably close with Willow, he also became fiercely protective of his younger siblings. He always tried to be a source of laughter rather than worry and for some time, the close-knit family managed to keep the tears at bay.
It was only when Orson perished in a tree felling accident that Robbie’s laughter dried up. Suddenly the four children were not only alone, but also in real danger of being split up. For three months, Willow managed to hold things together, acting as legal guardian with the help of an SRC care worker. In the end the burdens of adulthood became too heavy for her young shoulders. Robbie watched his once carefree sister grow tired and frail, straining under the responsibilities that this cruel twist had left her with. When she became moody and withdrawn, so did he. His curly hair became unkempt and though the neighbours made sure that they were fed properly, the weight dropped off him. When Holly fell ill, the three younger children were relocated to the Children’s Home in Hogsmeade. Willow found a job in London. Over the next few months, her visits to Hogsmeade became rarer until they stopped altogether.
It was less than a year later that a ray of hope appeared. Penelope Kurtz, a distant cousin of their mother, arrived at the Children’s Home one warm night in July. She had been researching the wading habits of the Andean flamingo in Bolivia for the past five years. With the political tensions in the region reaching breaking point, she had decided to take a short breather on home soil before continuing her research in Namsos, Norway. Though her travels took her all over the world, Miss Kurtz managed to convince the executor of the Foxglove estate that she would be able to provide a stable life for the three children. The two boys would also be able to enrol at Gokstad Academy once they were old enough.
The opportunity at a fresh start in life came at exactly the right time for Robbie. Over the next three years, the sullen boy changed into a confident teenager who enjoyed his studies and adored his siblings. With his aunt travelling so much of the time, Robbie took it upon himself to keep an eye out for the two younger Foxgloves. His sheer will to thrive in this new set of circumstances fortified him during the first uncertain months at the Academy. He focused on figuring out where his own talents lay and found a way to use them whenever he had the chance. By the time Alder started school, Robbie had become completely self-reliant and encouraged his brother to come to him first if there was trouble. Though he saw less of Holly, he sent regular owls to his baby sister and encouraged her to write whenever she could.
Finally, just after Robbie’s fourteenth birthday, Aunt Penelope announced that they would return to the UK. Her plan was to rent a house in Hogsmeade where she hoped to ‘get a spot of writing done.’ Both Robbie and Alder would transfer to Hogwarts at the beginning of the new school year – something that excited and terrified Robbie in equal measures. The idea of making new friends was nothing short of thrilling, but his studies worried him. Though Robbie had always managed to keep well on top of his classes, he only ever excelled in Charms. In Robbie’s eyes, Charms was by far the most interesting and useful application of magic available to someone his age. The rest of his subjects were of no real interest to him. It would be more than four months until the end of the current school year, more than enough time to fall truly behind in those duller areas of magic.
To remedy all of this, Penelope arranged private tutor sessions for both Robbie and Alder. The Ministry Official that visited the family after their arrival in Hogsmeade approved of these arrangements, yet still suggested Robbie take an extra year to prepare for his OWLs. With this weight lifted, Robbie finally allowed himself to dream about the Hogwarts years that stretched out ahead of him.

Option I:
Thump.
The dull thud reverberated throughout the Dungeon corridors, but Robbie Foxglove was much too preoccupied to notice.
Thump.
It was probably not the best idea to try and knock a dent out of a cauldron in the middle of the Dungeons corridor, but desperate times and all that. This was the third cauldron he’d accidentally damaged this year. The first had somehow sprung an irreparable leak (Robbie still maintained the thing had been jinxed) while the second rusted all over after The Sleakeazy Incident. Even Robbie’s usually effective Scourgify couldn’t eradicate the uncommonly silky patches of oxidation that had settled in the belly of the pewter vessel. And so he was onto his third cauldron now – the very cauldron that had gotten dented after only two weeks. There was no way he would survive asking his aunt for yet another replacement, which is why he was now sat in a dark corridor, his eyes straining in the half-light as he repeatedly struck the inside of the Standard Pewter Size Two with his roommate’s beater bat.
"H-h-hello?"
The voice came out of nowhere. Though it was barely a whisper, it distracted Robbie just long enough for his aim to waiver. The bat missed the cauldron altogether and connected with the boy’s knuckles instead. By some miracle he managed to swallow the string of expletives as he clutched at his throbbing hand.
"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"
“No!” he hollered back, fighting back the tears that were threatening to spill over his cheeks. For a second Robbie wondered whether his aunt would take pity on his injured hand, but then he realised he’d never be able to tell her about this half-baked plan anyway. She’d want to know why the cauldron had gotten dented in the first place and that would just complicate things. No, he would need to come up with another plan altogether.
Swallowing back the last of his anguish he discarded both bath and cauldron with an almighty
clang
, then moved in the direction of the voice.
“But if you find her, tell her she owes me a new set of knuckles. And a cauldron too.”
