Biography:

There wasn’t much the world expected of street kids. Benji Cuddrun may as well have been born in the gutters of Richmond Road, the way London society saw children – especially boys - like him.

Benji’s parents, Harry and Liza Cuddrun were generally apathetic about their wayward preteen. Harry, a muggleborn and war veteran, ran a wizard pub a few streets from their home. He worked long hours, and when he was home, he often sat in silence, reading his books and pretending his wife and children didn’t exist. He had been much like his son, a wayward young man with not much promise or much to offer the world, and despite his military service (or perhaps because of) that hadn’t changed with age.

Liza, a half-blood witch had come from a decent, middle-class family that encouraged hard work and the importance of family. Much to her family’s dismay and confusion, she had gotten involved with Harry, and all that had flown out the proverbial window. She spent much of her time staring at the tele and not much else. Occasionally, she would muster the strength to shout at her two children when she couldn’t hear her programs. If they stayed out of her hair and didn’t ask her for much, or bring complaining neighbors to her door, she really didn’t care what they did.

Raised in the poor Hackney borough of London, Benji rarely stayed home and even more rarely attended school as he should. At the young age of only eleven, Benji seemed as street-wise as the older teenaged boys he ran around with most days. They hung around on door-stoops, shouting rude words at passersby, or riding their skateboards around the neighboring boroughs. They knocked over bins, graffitied random back-alley buildings, smoked cigarettes and generally caused a nuisance wherever they went.

Benji loved every moment of it. It was an escape from the monotonous, lackluster and cold environment of his own home. The other boys gave him a sense of belonging and family, in a way his own never did. He felt cared for when one of the older kids would steal him a fizzy from the corner store, or when they’d give him a pair of their old shoes, knowing his parents would never buy him new ones. It was natural to him that he’d do everything in his power to impress them, or do whatever they asked him to. The fact that strange, almost magical things happened around him occasionally only made him more well-liked amongst them.

The only thing Benji loved more than being a part of his band of misfit toys, was his little six-year-old sister Kate. While he would never admit it to his friends, Benji took special efforts to ensure Kate was cared for. He got up every day and made her breakfast from what little food they had, helped her comb her hair and walked her to school. If she really pleaded, he’d stay and attend school as he should have. He always walked her home, got her a snack and made sure she was safely entertained in her bedroom, before he’d run out the front door again.

It was no surprise to him the day he came across a black owl on his front gate, clutching an envelope with a wax seal on it. He was knuckle-deep in a bag of stolen crisps, returning from another day of mayhem, when the owl whistled at him to grab his attention. He was amused however, that the school was still interested, when surely they knew he didn’t even attend his muggle school eighty-seven percent of the time.

As he took the letter into his grubby little hands and marveled at the gold embossing, only one word came to mind.

Kate.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

House Request: Fate be the name of the game.

Personality:

At first glance, it would be easy to put Benji into a box, seal it and call it a day. He’s a kid from the streets of London, with ratty clothes, messy hair and sarcastic attitude that’s a little surprising for his age. He’s fast-talking and quite the slacker. Excuses come naturally to him. In many ways, he’s exhausting and frustrating, but that’s only surface level.

Benji is incredibly empathetic, especially towards people he sees himself or his little sister in. He has a lot of compassion for people who seem to come from nothing, but he will rarely show it publicly. He’s not necessarily the kid that will stand up for others, as he’s always had to figure stuff out for himself and thinks others have to as well, but he doesn’t care for bullies. While he may not say something in the moment, Benji can be very conniving and will find a way to get vengeance without anyone knowing it (or at least he’ll have a strong case for denial). While he of course has a temper, his home life has trained him to manage it outwardly, and he often rages on the inside, while remaining poker-faced.

Aside from tempers, Benji has a great sense of humor. He finds the smallest things funny, and this can come off as charming or endearing to some. He often uses humor to defuse situations, and this can be perceived as manipulative. Because he’s also eleven, being annoying can certainly come naturally.

Thievery is not something Benji likes doing, but it’s something he’s learned how to do when he needs to. He’s been caught several times, as he’s not quite as stealthy as he thinks he is, but with time, he’s gotten slightly better at it. He doesn’t enjoy school, but perhaps Hogwarts will bring out a new love of learning that he never had.

At the core of who he is, Benji just wants to belong to something. He wants a family, he wants someone to show him that he is loveable and that he can be better than his circumstances. If Benji meets someone who truly believes in him and pushes him to be better, he will reach to meet those expectations.

Don’t tell him I told you that though. He’d be really annoyed I blew his cover.

Appearance:

Benji has sandy brown hair, worn shaggy and slightly overgrown around his ears since he hasn’t had a haircut in a while. He has large hazel eyes that smile before his mouth does, and a few freckles dot his cheeks from being outside all the time. His teeth are crooked, as he just lost his last few baby teeth. He is slightly short for his age, and stocky but not chubby. Benji’s clothes are old and worn, but it doesn’t really seem to bother him all that much.

Option 2:

Roleplay Response:

Benji was tired of being cooped up indoors. It had been raining for the past week, and while that normally wouldn’t deter him at home, the rain here seemed to have an extra chill to it, and he didn’t own a jumper yet. He had noticed one left behind at lunch one day by a Ravenclaw, but before he had been able to snatch it, a girl had run by and grabbed it, shouting that, “Avery forgot his jumper again!”

He had stared out the windows, day after day, just watching the water droplets stream downwards. Sometimes he pretended they were racing and would make silent bets against one or the other, but that grew tiresome quickly. Sure, he could read, or study, but that sounded even worse than watching rain fall. He had managed a couple of games of wizard chess with his housemates, but what he really wanted was to be outside with a skateboard and his friends back home.

Now that the rain had finally cleared, he made his way out to the gardens, as he hadn’t really explored that part of the grounds yet. He felt a flutter of excitement as he caught a glimpse of the Quidditch grounds in the distance, and he thought eagerly of his upcoming broom-riding class. It was the only class he could say he really enjoyed so far, and he couldn’t wait until the Quidditch matches started so he could watch. Anything outdoors was better than sitting in that big school. For some reason, though it was full of other kids, he somehow felt alone and the rooms and hall felt vast and empty.

Though it was fall, there were still a few flowers that were in bloom, mostly red and some yellows. While Benji cared absolutely nothing about flowers, he smiled, knowing his little sister Kate would absolutely love them. A strange knot turned in his stomach suddenly, and he found himself worrying about her again. Did she eat breakfast? Did someone walk with her home from school? Did his mother help her comb her hair the way she liked? Benji glared at the flowers. What a stupid thing to wonder. Mum didn’t help anyone with anything.

Feeling a rush of anger flush through him, he kicked at the flowers, and heard a huge sneeze at the same time. He jumped back as he saw an older boy a few feet from him and he clenched his jaw, wondering if what he kicked up went into the boy’s face. The boy had stood up and was wiping his nose on his robes. Benji made a face of disgust. Even though he was only eleven, he knew that was gross.

"Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

Polite? The only people who ever admonished Benji for not being polite were usually adults. And they didn’t wipe their snot on their clothes, as far as he knew. Benji smiled out of the corner of his mouth, “Not staring mate, no worries.” The kid hadn’t said anything about him kicking up the dirt, so he figured better not apologize and make things worse. He didn’t want to get chased out of the garden by an upperclassman just as he had finally been released from his castle prison. He did wonder though, why the boy had had his face so close to the dirt in any case.

“Are you looking for something?” he asked, trying to make a good impression. Snot clothes or not, Benji needed friends, and maybe this one was his introduction to better ones. “Maybe I can help? I’ve got nothing better to do.”
