Biography:
Hey there.
I’m Alder - the other Foxglove.
My early story is quite a sad one, though if you’ve met either my brother or my aunt, you’ve probably heard it by now.
My mum died when I was five, my dad a few years later. Willow, our older sister, left us at the Hogsmeade Children’s Home and never came back. Can’t say I blame her though; looking after three young kids doesn’t sound like fun at all.
They were kind at the Children’s Home, mostly. The sheets, walls and blankets were all the same shade of washed-out beige. Also, all of our cots were in one big room. Holly slept with the girls, which was lucky for her because none of them probably snored like the boys did. They were messy too and Robbie was the worst of the whole bloody lot.
Anyway, I don’t remember much about our time there. I was too young. I do remember one of the older girls sometimes bought us ice cream in return for carrying her parcels, but that was about it.
Oh, and there was a sycamore tree right outside our window, with lots of birds that woke us in the morning. There were squirrels too and since we could see that big old tree from Holly’s window, we spent a great many hours looking at the tiny universe sustained by the trunk, seeds and shade. The foxes came and ruined all of that, but that is a whole other story for another time.
Aunt Penélope found us and after a few months of coaxing and cajoling, we left the big tree and the dull sheets behind and followed her North.
Norway was nicer than the Home, if a bit odd. The castle at Gokstad used to groan most of the time, especially in the winter when the wind rattled the ancient walls. It was dark too, so dark that we had to stay indoors all during the winter. I didn’t really mind it; there was a huge library and I’d just started Arithmancy lessons, so that kept me pretty busy. Numbers always stay the same, regardless of where in the world you go, so I never had to figure out how to do any of the homework in Norwegian.
In the summer, they used to play a lot of Quidditch at Gokstad but because the teams couldn’t really practice during the winter, they were all pretty shit. I never joined a team, but they still let me use the team brooms for flying. That was the part I really liked, so Auntie bought me a broom of my own for my birthday. Of course, after flying on mine a few times, Robbie had to get one of his own as well.
(He got his broom two days after my twelfth birthday, even though he’d just had his birthday the month before and Christmas was coming up, too. But then he usually gets his own way, so I shouldn’t be all that surprised.)
At least all the trips on my broom helped Robs turn into a decent Quidditch player over the years, so being on a team keeps him happy and out of trouble.
After some years in Norway, we headed back to Hogsmeade. This time, Auntie decided she wanted to write a book about all her expeditions. It’s probably not going too well, really, since she now spends most of her days shopping in Hogsmeade. We waited for a few months before we could start at Hogwarts and during that time, I had two tutors - one for Potions (at which I am finally getting better) and another for Divination (at which I am still very very shit).
Finally, after all of that, I’m at Hogwarts. And I must say, it’s not all that bad. The Scottish weather’s perfectly balmy compared to Norway, and I’m even able to take a Magical Cooking class. Seriously, if you’ve ever tasted Auntie’s cooking, you’d realise why it’s so important to start teaching adult life skills at school.
The only thing I can complain about is the Herbology department. Since the weather is so much nicer than at Gokstad, I was expecting a bit more from the Hogwarts syllabus and lessons. The greenhouses could do with a bit more upkeep as well; I’m sure I’ve spotted Doxies in at least one of the storage rooms.
Seriously, it’s a disgrace.

House Request: Ravenclaw, please!
Alder enjoys learning for learning’s sake, is endlessly inquisitive and often lives in a world of his own. Though he has very specific interests, he tries his best to at least know a little bit about every subject he stumbles across.
Besides, the boy will look fabulous in blue and bronze!

Option 2:
At the first sound of the frantic (slightly desperate) cries, Alder Foxglove glanced up from his comic book. It was probably too early in the day to ditch his responsibilities for an hour or so of uninterrupted reading, but he liked sitting in the gardens around this time. It was as far from the hustle and bustle of breakfast in the Great Hall he could manage, so it was normally really peaceful and quiet.
Normally, because on this day, apparently, the boy approaching his little spot on the grass had gone and lost his rat.
If his stomping and whining wasn’t enough, the boy actually trampled on several flowers in his search before sticking his head straight into the flowerbed.
Alder sighed, dark eyes appraising the approaching figure before he turned his attention back to the comic in front of him. Charlie Peace was stuck on a ledge, halfway between escaping with a bag full of jewels and plummeting to his death. Since his exploits were so much more interesting than Hugh the Rat Boss’ fruitless search, Alder decided to ignore the entire scene and even the sneeze that followed in its wake.
Unfortunately, Hapless Hugh decided to engage.
"Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."
Alder glanced up from the adventure he held on his knees, giving the boy in front of him little more than a cursory glance before turning back to his reading. When he finally spoke, he sounded more bored than anything else.
“I’d find that rat if I were you.”
He turned a page, dark eyes focusing on the fresh set of illustrations before he continued.
“My owl had a terrible night’s hunting and I’m sure he’d enjoy something more than an apple for breakfast.”
