Strength and weaknesses (details please): From a young age, Lily excelled magically, though it was a bit chaotic and hard for her to control at first. In fits of emotion, she would manipulate the room around her at random. Over time, she gained control over it, developing into wandless and speechless magic that she (usually) had full control of. Beyond that, she did very well at Hogwarts academically, awards and honors littering the Trophy Room.
But if you asked her, she wouldn’t brag about all of that. She was most proud of her empathy for others, never backing down when she thought something was wrong or shy of holding out a helping hand. That said, she also had quite a stubborn streak to her that could be a bit jarring.
Lily flexes between being lost in her own world and hyper-fixating on the comings and goings of the world around her. While this can sometimes come across as a girl with her head in the clouds, her distractions are important to her and she isn’t sorry for them.
Physical description: Lily stands at 5’8” and carries herself confidently. She has long dark hair and cognac coloured eyes.
Personality (nice, rude, funny etc. Paragraph please.): Lily is highly empathetic and caring when it comes to others. However, it’s best to stay on her good side as her stubborn streak, aptitude without a wand and McCormick sharp tongue are a recipe for disaster. Lily loves people, but needs frequent time to herself to recharge. Being around a lot of people is great, but she can only do so much of it before she needs to retreat and be alone. She feels emotions very deeply. Alters from being intensely focused on the work and those around her to disconnecting from them altogether.
Hopes and dreams. Why are you teaching at Hogwarts?: Truthfully, Lily wasn’t sure exactly why she was applying at Hogwarts. She loves her job as Cursebreaker and plans on still pursuing her career in addition to teaching. She has her apprehensions about returning to Hogwarts as her last few terms were rough, to say the least. Feeling a little lost in the world, a return to her roots might just be the trick to getting her back on track.
Biography (500 words minimum. There is never such a thing as too much.):
Once upon a time, there was a family. It was a very big family that seemed to grow and swell continually. Not like a balloon or a bubble. Those popped and vanished, fading away into the wind, never to be seen in the world again. And McCormicks didn’t pop. No, they swelled like the bridge in a song, humming together to form a tune that was the prettiest thing Lily’d ever heard. Lovely individually, but together? Unforgettable.
Through the winking of starlight and moon dust, the world pulled Lily, bright eyed and bewildered, into its arms on the 7th of April, 1950.
From the beginning, Lily always loved people. She loved figuring them out and getting to know them and making new friends. But as much as Lily could love them, the girl often found the need to separate from them. In times when the world felt so loud that it might make her heart break in half, she found herself pulling away and spending time with just Lily until she was able to recharge.
Maybe it was because she was the eldest of 8 children and, from birth, was always surrounded by chaos, but Lily has always felt her emotions very deeply and, at times, had trouble controlling them. Sometimes this would cause her to display instances of powerful accidental magic. From a very young age, Lily has always passed these instances off as acts of her dear old teddy, Fred, and has yet to truly understand that the magic comes from her.
A wandering spirit at heart, Lily loves adventure but is also known to get lost in little tiny pieces of the world that others may view as insignificant. Things like lemon meringue pie sky, how some of the stars twinkle just a little bit more than others, and how, if you were quiet and still, the wind would whisper secrets into your ears.
She excelled academically at Hogwarts, holding a heavy level of natural talent in her bones. Her accidental magic flared stronger as well until she started to learn that it was something she could, in fact control. So she took extra time during her school year with some trusted professors, honed her skill into wandless and speechless magic, a skill that she continues to practice to this day.
But it wasn’t all easy at Hogwarts. Especially when things got rough at home. Her parents were no longer in harmony and it tore her apart inside, leading to destructive behavior and acting out. The sweet, loving Lily was still there, but a harder shell had grown around her, protecting her from external elements that threatened to break her apart.
Very few people got past that barrier.
However, she had a good foundation. Even though she was the eldest and loved to take care of her siblings, it was nice that when she got to Hogwarts she was able to ‘adopt’ a set of older brothers that looked after her and kept her grounded. When things got deep dark, she found a mentor and a father in the potion’s professor, who pushed her in ways she could handle and she thrived.
When she graduated, she continued down a path she’d started as a first year as a political activist. She’d gotten a job as a cursebreaker through her uncle Sei’s shady shop so she could continue to play with magic in her free time.
Her song is still playing, though it’s a even more chaotic, skipping here and there. When her own little family started to grow, she didn’t take to motherhood as naturally as most things. But she had her support system, and, together, they figured it out.
Just like they do everything.
SAMPLE ROLEPLAY
It was the largest office in Hogwarts and, perhaps to students and newcomers, the most intimidating. The shelves were filled with paperwork, and lots and lots of books. A few of the shelves had various odds and ends that had been saved from previous owners. The sorting hat was facing a wall. The walls held all the portraits of past Headmasters and Headmistresses, as well as her Russian portraits. Anneka Ivanova's was closest to Karina's desk.
In the middle of the room sat a large desk. Everything was in order. Almost a ruthless order. Important papers were closest to her, with her favourite quill. Then other documents further away. And at the edge is her favourite Venus flytrap and a picture of Vlad.
A clock sat on the desk, which currently showed the time to be 2:05. The meeting was supposed to begin at 2:00 precisely.
Karina was not always punctual. Yes, she was aware of the time, she would just deliberately come late. She valued control. And what better method of control than making people wait for you. But she expected others to be punctual to the second. Or early. So naturally Karina Ivansko was not happy.
"You have five minutes to assure me that you'll never be late again." Karina said to the applicant gesturing to the ancient and uncomfortable chair across from her. Her fingernails drummed irritably on the desk. And she had a look on her face that imitated a Russian winter.
(Yes, she had learned well from the great Anneka Ivanova).
Roleplay Response:
Lily wasn’t late when she stepped through the castle doors. In fact, she had plenty of time to get to the Headmistress’s office and remembered exactly how to get there. However, she’d gotten into a heated debate over the colour of the sky with Sir Bibblesworth.* Honestly how the silly little man, a portrait thought she knew more about the sky than she did, she would never understand.
(--and she wasn’t underestimating the power and heavy beauty a painting could have, but the sky was the sky—-)
By the time she pushed through the door to the Headmistress’s office she was 5 (arguably 4, depending on the clock you looked at) minutes late.
"You have five minutes to assure me that you'll never be late again."
Lily gave an amused little huff, looking around. Who let this insane woman grace this position?
“Oh, Katrina, you know I can’t promise you that. The world is a busy place. And, besides, correct me if I’m remembering incorrectly, but I recall you being late to a few lessons or, at the very least a few feasts.” She raised her eyebrows and then slipped her hand into her bag, pulling out some paperwork.
Lily organized it especially for this meeting, but noticed a certain little someone had scribbled ’good luk mummy’ across one of the pages. She touched the crayon marking and then shuffled it to the back of the pile.
“Anyway, we can stand here arguing about how time is a human invented construct or we can go over these lesson plans and see what you think.”
She pushed the papers forward, honey eyes flitting up.
“It’s up to you.”
