Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Hawthorne Carroll

Birthday: 15 December 1958

Hometown: Hogsmeade

Bloodline:
Pureblood? (Child of 2 pureblood squibs)

Magical Strength (pick one):
Divination

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Charms

Year (pick two): First, Second

Biography:
It was his and Holly's birthday, as it had been several times before. But this year, it would be different. It was their 11th birthday, which meant Holly would be getting her letter and he wouldn't, confirming the fact that their days together were limited. In a few months, Holly would be heading out to Hogwarts, a place no one in his family had ever had the privilege of being able to go. But Holly had shown signs of magic from a very early age. They even had to have their family friends, the Reeds, fireproof their home because of her destructive temper tantrums as a baby.

But Thorne had never shown any sign of magic. Not even the smallest ounce. It was clear he had as much magic as his squib parents. But that was okay. He didn't mind that he was a squib. He just didn't like that he and Holly would be separated for the first time in their lives.

When an owl arrived with a letter addressed to Holly, it came as no surprise. Of course, Holly was excited, and Thorne frowned slightly. But while the family was celebrating, the oddest thing happened. A second owl arrived. Carrying another letter with the Hogwarts seal. But this one was addressed to Thorne.

Perhaps there'd been a mistake? Perhaps because he and Holly were twins they just assumed they were both magical? But his parents still celebrated and never questioned it. While Thorne was of course excited, he couldn't help but feel that something would go wrong, that he'd get a letter saying they'd made a mistake, or he'd get to Hogwarts and they'd wonder why he was there. Or, something else would go wrong because he wasn't actually a wizard.

Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: I'll leave it up to the hat

Personality:
Thorne is very logical-minded and enjoys working with his hands. He enjoys building all sorts of things from his Lego set, and learning how things work.

Thorne is fairly quiet and prefers observing others than engaging in conversation. He enjoys being around his small circle of friends, which includes his sister, Holly, and the Reed twins, who are practically family to him, but the idea of meeting so many new people at Hogwarts is very overwhelming to him.

Appearance:
Thorne is rather small in stature and has mousy brown hair and blue eyes, similar to his parents. He thinks his looks are an accurate representation of himself. A bit dull, boring, and nothing special.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.
You come across one of these posts on the site. Please select one & reply as your character. Remember, you can only roleplay your own character's actions, not Evangeline's or Hugh's.

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

Roleplay Response:
The dungeons had to be Thorne's absolutely least favourite part of the castle. It was dark and cold and damp all the time. But he had to practice his potion brewing. He was one of the worst in his class, and eventually, the teachers would probably think he was a fraud and kick him out. And now that he'd gotten to Hogwarts, he'd decided he really really liked being here.

But he felt all the professors expected him to do well, like Holly was. After all, they were twins. Shouldn't he at least be half as good as Holly was at magic? He was good at Herbology, of course, and really enjoyed Muggle Studies, but did very poorly at his magic-based classes.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The voice frightened Thorne at first, but then he realized it sounded familiar. He turned the corner and let out a sigh of relief when he saw a girl who was in some of his classes.

"Who's Emma Birch?" He asked the girl. He figured it was another student, possibly one of the girl's friends. "Is she a Slytherin?" He asked. He knew their dorms were down here, somewhere.

Biography: (100 words minimum.)
Hawthorne and his twin sister, Holly, were born prematurely on December 15, 1958. While Holly thrived, Hawthorne lagged behind in his development. This kept going as they aged. As a baby, Holly showed signs of magic, while Hawthorne still hasn't, leading his parents to wonder if he is a squib like they are.

Hawthorne and Holly couldn't be more different. Where she is loud and demanding, he is quiet and easygoing. He enjoys playing with toys like blocks and other toys he can use to build or make things with. He doesn't talk much, and when he does it's usually short sentences. He is usually busy observing things happening in the world than responding to them.

Roleplay:
Reply as your character to the following:

Godric Park.

Overhead, the sky was a crisp blue, for once clear of the ever-pervasive spongy clouds and rain. The sun was a lemony-yellow presence, high in the Eastern sky, and in front of it zipped three broomsticks in a straight line, or something very like one. One... two..... three... the boys passed, their shouts of excitement echoing as they chased the snitch, a tiny shimmer reflecting the sunlight.

Far below was another, much smaller broomstick.

It trugged along the ground, hugging close to it like a sluggish choo choo train and occasionally shuttering in protest. This was because said stick was currently being occupied by a very small girl who was tugging upward on the front of it with all her might, trying to coax it into doing what it had been expressly designed NOT to do.

"John, I said wait up!" The tiny girl squealed, giving the broomstick another tug.

Begrudgingly, it drifted upward a foot, and then sank, depositing the troublesome girl safely on the ground. Janey Hurst was not pleased. In a huff, she hopped off the toy safety broom, grabbing it firmly and thrusting it handle first into the turf.

Her brother was such a beast. He NEVER let her play! She folded her arms, seething blue eyes fixing on another figure nearby.  "You!" She barked, much more sharply than she meant to.

"...Do you want to play?"

Roleplay Response:
Hawthorne sat on a bench next to his mother in the park. Holly was off having fun, but Hawthorne found it much more fun to watch the kids zooming around on their brooms. It was fascinating to watch. Things like this didn't typically happen around his house.

A younger girl, closer to his age, looked like she was trying to play, but she couldn't get the broom to fly. She seemed upset by this. Hawthorne didn't fully understand what made the brooms float in the air, but the girl seemed really mad.

"You!" She was staring right at him now. He jumped slightly at the sudden noise directed at him.

"Do you want to play?"

He looked at his mother for permission and she nodded. He hopped off the bench and nodded at the girl that he did want to play. "Hide and Seek?" he suggested.
