Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Cordelia Ella Langley

Birthday: September 18, 1959

Hometown: Bath, Somerset

Bloodline: Pureblood

Magical Strength (pick one): Defense Against the Dark Arts

Magical Weakness (pick one): Divination

Year (pick two): First Year / Second Year

Biography:

The earliest memory Cordelia can recall is one of hatred.

A mother's hatred. Her mother despises her, and Cordelia knows it with a certainty that belies her young age. It's not an intentional, cruel kind of hatred, but the kind that is born from something unwanted, something utterly damning.

Her mother tries, she knows. She has seen it in the way her mother attempts affection, tries to be maternal, yet cannot quite seem to connect. The gestures are there, but the warmth is absent, replaced by a cold, almost mechanical approach to motherhood.

Cordelia understands why. She, herself, is the thing that has damned her mother. The final binding piece toward a marriage undesired. A child, born out of obligation rather than love, tethering her mother to a life she never wanted.

Despite her young age, Cordelia grasps the complexity of her family's dynamics. She sees the strain in her parents' interactions, the unspoken resentment that hangs heavy in the air. Her existence, she realizes, is a constant reminder of the life her mother feels trapped in, the dreams she had to abandon.

So, she stays out of the way, more to be seen than truly acknowledged. Perfectly poised, with a lovely smile, but silent, only speaking when spoken to. It's a delicate art she begins to learn, amidst etiquette and various other lessons for a young lady of fine magical pedigree such as she is.

Her silence lends one small advantage, however. She is easily forgotten when not required for appearances. In the grand halls and lavish parlors of her family's estate, Cordelia becomes a ghost, a silent observer who blends into the background.

And people talk when they are comfortable, when they believe no one is listening.

She learns that the Langleys, her paternal side, are not one of the oldest nor wealthiest of pureblood families in Britain. They are new money, their wealth and status acquired through shrewd business dealings and strategic alliances. But what they lack in history, they make up for in ambition and cunning.

Cordelia listens, absorbing the whispered conversations and veiled remarks. She learns of her family's machinations, the web of influence they seek to weave through the magical world. The Langleys are determined to rise, to cement their place among the elite, and they are not above using whatever means necessary to achieve their goals.

As she grows older, Cordelia begins to understand the expectations placed upon her. As a daughter of the Langley family, she is a pawn in their grand scheme, a piece to be moved and manipulated for their benefit. Her future, she realizes, is not her own to shape, but rather a path predetermined by the ambitions of her family.

On her 11th birthday, as she holds her Hogwarts letter, Cordelia feels a glimmer of hope that things might change. The letter represents a chance to escape the suffocating expectations of her family and forge her own path.

Cordelia dreams of a life beyond her family's ambitions, picturing herself learning magic and forming genuine friendships at Hogwarts. However, she knows that her hopes are fragile, as her family's expectations will follow her even to the school.

But perhaps some things are just worth fighting for. Even with the risk.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.
You come across one of these posts on the site. Please select one & reply as your character. Remember, you can only roleplay your own character's actions, not Evangeline's or Hugh's.

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

Option 2:

That rat of his was in for it now.

The gray little rascal had disappeared from his clutches at breakfast. Again.

Before Hugh even knew what was happening, Merlin had shot across the floor, somehow managing to avoid all the feet walking across the hall and had escaped through the open doors.

Which meant that Hugh was now stomping through rows of flowers and other various flora, searching for the small creature. It was like the rat knew Hugh was allergic to most flowers. Merlin always chose to run to the gardens whenever he got away from Hugh. It was as if the rat did not want to have him for an owner.

Hugh had named his pet Merlin because he had hoped the powerful name would give the rat more incentive to be more than a rat. Not that he expected Merlin to change into a wizard or anything, but rats were just so...useless, for the most part. With a name like Merlin, Hugh thought it might give the rat purpose.

The only purpose Merlin seemed to have was getting away from Hugh as often as possible.

As the fifth year trudged into the second row of flowers, not taking much care to avoid trampling the first row, he felt the first sneeze building up pressure in his nose and behind his eyes.

"You blasted rat! Where are you?"

He pulled apart a section of bright red flowers; he didn't know what they were called because he despised flowers, and ducked his head low to peer into the depths of the flowerbed. It was moving closer in proximity to the flowers that finally did it. Hugh took in three great breaths and then let out an almighty sneeze. It was strong enough to disturb some of the dirt on the ground before him.

Groaning, he stood up again and wiped his nose on his sleeve. It was as he was turning his head, his nose running up and down his arm, that movement in his peripheral vision caught his attention. Normally one who preferred to put his best face forward, Hugh was a bit embarrassed to be caught wiping his runny nose on his robes.

Nevertheless, Hugh put on his best haughty voice. albeit a bit thickly with his plugged nose and said, "Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

Roleplay Response:

Quite truthfully, Cordelia hadn't even seen the older boy until she heard the sound of a familiar, albeit nasal voice - familiar in the sense of the tone, but otherwise, nothing else. She paused upon the clear address of her, a newly checked-out book from the school library tucked protectively against her chest by crossed arms - she had simply been attempting to find a quiet place to settle down and try her latest book pickup. But clearly, that would not be happening until whatever this situation was, was remedied.

Though yes, there very much was an option to turn on her heel and leave, having no obligation to stay and ask the boy what the matter was, but that was not in good character. Not at all. "Just as it is not polite to disturb the flowers and their beds," She purposefully neglects to mention she had not witnessed such an act, even if there was evidence to suggest as such - best not to give him any leverage, in any case. Many things could be simply fixed or repaired with magic, but it was the principle that mattered. Who's to say someone's hard work did not go into those flowers? "So, I suppose we're both not being entirely polite today," she adds, not to be impertinent, but rather, more matter-of-factly. In a sense, it was true, after all.

"But please, forgive my impropriety, I am Cordelia Langley," she offered, giving a slight tilt of her head in acknowledgment. "If I may ask, what seems to be the cause of your..." She almost used the word 'distress', but decided against it - if he were the prickly type, best not to set him off. "Predicament?" she continued, neutrally.

Cordelia knew that there was a chance an older student like him might be put out by the mere insinuation to confide in such a younger student. Despite that, she thought it was always best to give things a try. You never know.

Hi Cordelia!

Welcome to Hoggies! Your app looks wonderful! Cordelia seems really fascinating.

There is just one thing that we'll need you to change. Under magical strengths, could you list one of the three other core subjects (Charms, Transfiguration or Conjuring/Summoning)?

Just reply here with that change. There is no need to copy the whole application.
