Biography: (300 words minimum.)
It was in 1975, living in between worlds of magic and no-magic, in a land reconstructing in the wake of civil war, smelling more strife on the horizon as colonists began to dig up gold close to their home, Elan and Phillis Midthunder discovered that their family was soon to grow. With unease growing in America, they bade goodbye to their old family to start anew across the ocean. A few months later, Merryl Midthunder was born on a stormy afternoon, beneath the battering of Irish rain upon the ceiling of a quaint local wizarding hospital.

They lived among a small wizarding community near Bristol, tending a small shop selling homemade potions. They didn't live a wealthy life, but a comfortable one -- far more so than they could have hoped to live in the United States in the country's current climate.

Merryl went off to Hogwarts with the rest of the children her age and was sorted in Gryffindor with the rest of the children who shared her bold temperament. Four years into her tutelage, while she was still at the castle, her parents both succumbed to Dragon Pox. Their death took her by surprise; they had been transparent about their illness from the start, less so about its severity. She should have known something was amiss from the moment they encouraged to remain at the castle for the Holidays.

Her school year was cut short as Merryl took responsibility for burying her parents in the manner she knew they would have preferred. She sold their shop and used the money to bring their bodies overseas. She took them all the way to South Dakota, to the location of her father's old reservation. When she arrived, however, she learned that they had moved further north, that most of the family they had left behind had been massacred in the last stand to protect their land.

With the help of two surviving distant cousins, Merryl returned to her father's ancestral burial ground. They told her of how their parents had met when, fleeing her southern captors during the civil war, Phyllis had sought and found refuge among their people. It was a harrowing tale, and a noble one, and one that must have been gruelling for her parents at the time. But she also felt quite distant from it, having grown so far away from where it had all happened and so sheltered from its fallout. It felt alien, it felt cruel, and it did not feel like home. She didn't feel at home on this continent and so, when her job was done and Merryl set sail for familiar shores, she would never return.

Having missed most of the school year, Merryl was forced to repeat her fourth year. As a student, she did well, respected by peers and professors alike. The Gryffindor was never in the limelight, but she'd never sought it out, either. Bold as she could be, she was among the quieter members of her Hogwarts house -- a pillar of quiet strength rather than a boisterous beacon of bravery.

Despite the bitter taste her trip to the America had left her with, in her early years of adulthood, Merryl travelled far and wide, paying each and every other continent by the time she turned thirty. She spent some years in Great Britain where she trained to become an auror. She rose through the ranks swiftly as a woman could without making an effort to stand out from the lot -- which was to say, not fast at all. It was only when she began to speak up that her superiors noticed her at all.

Merryl Midthunder, you see, was a canny witch. Presented with a problem, she had the wisdom required to see the plans others would not. And while they often seemed too risky or incredibly foolhardy, Merryl never hesitated to launch herself at the forefront of the action when she was confident that her ideas were solid. More often than not, they were.

Having finally earned some prestige to her name, Merryl decided to move to Paris. Here, she learned the local language for a few months before pledging her services to the French army. Here, too, her advice was valued. She remained in a small apartment by the Seine for the next fifty years before she decided it was finally time to return home.

Option Two -
The snow had been falling steadily all morning and it didn't look like it was going to stop any time soon. Joshua Campbell scrunched his face up in a frown as he lifted his gaze to look to the sky. Snow. It really was quite a bother.

And it certainly didn't make it better that Diagon Alley seemed to be getting more and more crowded. Joshua sighed and pointed his wand at the large box that was currently placed on the doorstep of his shop. He had to get going. He had an order to deliver.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" The elderly man muttered and watched the box hover in the air for a moment. Honestly, did St. Mungo's really need that much tinsel? And with glitter of all things? He sighed again. If it hadn't been for the rather convincing stamp on the order, he would have been likely to believe it had been a prank by one of those orphaned rascals living up there.

Oh well, there was no point in waiting. Joshua deftly stirred the box down the doorstep and out onto the street, carefully levitating it above the heads of the crowd.

"Coming through! Coming through!" His voice sounded over the chatter of the crowd. "Keep out! Move ahead! Go on!" This was going way too slow. People were in the way and walking like they had all day! He huffed. Luckily the road was down hill.

"Coming through! Coming th--- arrrgh!" Joshua let out a loud shout as his feet suddenly slipped in the snow and sent him, the box, and several long strands of tinsel tumbling into the person who had been walking in front of him.

"For Merlin's sake!" Joshua muttered angrily as he hurried to his feet again, red and gold tinsel now decorating his black coat. "I am so sorry! This blasted snow!" He looked apologetic at the person he had crashed into.

Roleplay Response:
Merryl Midthunder had never much appreciated large crowds. Years in the military that you never knew who might be hiding in a crowd. Years of military training her taught her, too, that crowds were the best possible staging area for potential attacks. And though Britain had been at peace for many years now, Merryl was not.

Her heavy boots crunched loudly against the snow with every step. Watchful brown eyes darted left and right, forever on the lookout for suspicious activity. They found no shady men hiding in an alleyway, wands a-ready. They found no cackling hag removing the stopper from a volatile vial. They glanced over the man who ended up stepping far too close for comfort, catching him only in his abrupt falling movement.

Years of training made Merryl's reflexes lightning fast. Her arms reached out to catch whatever it was that had been levitating above his head that was now soaring through the air. The box landed in her arms moments before the man himself stumbled right into her. Merryl was knocked backwards but steadied herself before gravity got the best of her. The box in her arms caved in slightly beneath the strength of a crushing hug. Merryl barely even realised that she was now covered in glitter and tinsel.

She did, however, notice how much of the stuff now covered him.

Seeing him so bedazzled, so apologetic, so far from the danger she'd been fearing, Merryl let out a hearty laugh as she loosened her hold on his box, holding him out to him with one arm as she held out the other as an offer to help him back to his feet. "No need to apologize, sir. That was quite a spectacular fall! You're not hurt, are you?"
