Application for Hogwarts School

CHARACTER INFORMATION.
Name: Viola Vane

Birthday: 11 June 1924

Hometown: Liverpool

Bloodline: Halfblood

Magical Strength (pick one): Conjuring & Summoning

Magical Weakness (pick one): Divination

Year (pick two): 7th, 6th

Biography:

Viola; violet. A flower.

Never have I felt so out of place than within the confines of my own name.

"Just call me Vi," I correct them, my smile forced but convincing, plastered on lips stained bright red, a warning these virtual strangers have failed to heed.

"But Viola is such a pretty name!" they declare, as if I haven't heard it a thousand times. As if it should still surprise and flatter me to hear it. "You should use it more often." I continue to smile, and say nothing.

All my life I have been told, directly or not, that I am here to look pretty and serve others and not much else. My name is only the first of many pieces of evidence I have collected in support of this fact. I must speak only when appropriate. I must act as a lady. I must not throw mud at boys who threw it at me first.

(He deserved it.)

(Both times.)

Still, I learned to behave myself when it mattered. I learned to dress myself for my own benefit, and no one else's. I learned when to argue and when to let things go, most of the time. I still have trouble with that one.

I learned it all without my father. Perhaps I did it for his benefit.

Perhaps I did it to distract myself from his sudden absence.

Mudblood, come the whispers around me in the halls of Hogwarts, once I am old enough to go, though I am not a mudblood. "It's a common misconception," I say, pointedly, bluntly. "I am only half mud." I pretend the words don't sting, don't immediately bring up memories of my father. I think if they were bad memories, it would be easier.

Mother never talks about Father, and I wish she would. Instead she teaches me to perform the tea ceremony and to cook properly. She insists that I perform well at school, though there is not much there that holds my interest for long.

I straighten up as if on instinct, to prove that I am capable of being more than mud. As if I have anything to prove to these children with old money and ties to the Ministry.

Don't get angry, I tell myself, and immediately begin thinking of how to get revenge. I am a walking contradiction.

I stand in front of the mirror with my favorite red lipstick, smiling at the the imposing face on the other side of the glass.

Sometimes the prettiest flowers have the sharpest thorns.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: Gryffindor?

Personality: While Viola may project a capable and collected exterior, inside her head she yearns to cause a ruckus and rebel. It doesn't even particularly matter what she rebels against; for her it is a sign of being alive that she is fighting for something. If she chooses to retaliate or rebel, it will likely be in the subtlest way possible to avoid upsetting her mother or causing a serious disturbance. Despite her indifference to most things, she is generally a happy person and will almost never back down from a dare.

Appearance: Viola's mother is half Japanese, giving both her and Viola very distinct features. Viola's raven hair tends to alternate every few years between a short bob and a long sheet which she can pull into a high bun or other appropriate style. She has brown eyes and occasionally must wear a pair of glasses, usually during class when she is actually trying to pay attention. Her characteristic look is a bright red lip and heavy eyeliner, which she does not hesitate to wear with her uniform.

SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.
Please reply to one of the Sample Roleplays below.

Vi hurried along the corridor, gray ankle boots slapping against the stone in rhythm as her feet carried her away from the common room and toward the great hall. She was hungry, and the game running late had meant a delay in meal time as well. The game had been good, to be sure, but Vi's stomach was protesting loudly to the mistreatment.

The food was not like it was at home. It was filling for the sake of being filling, and Vi had taken a long time to get used to it. Still, she found herself reaching for fish and rice more often than not when it was available.

"Almost there," she said, mostly for her own benefit.

The entrance came into view just as her stomach growled angrily. Then someone came storming out. Vi swerved, moving to avoid him, and tried to approach the door without incident, he really looked like he wanted to be alone-

"WHAT! Haven't you ever seen a loser before? Why don't you just take a picture!"

-or maybe not. Vi spun, checking behind her on the off-chance the boy wasn't addressing her at all. No such luck. She turned back.

"Um hi." Vi pursed her lips and stared. All she'd heard was yelling and something about a picture. Maybe he wanted a picture… of the school. Like a map. He was probably angry because Hogwarts was very big and confusing. It was understandable. Vi smiled, friendly, and tilted her head slightly.

"Are you lost?"

She hadn't meant to sound so patronizing.
