Calyx Elfman

Biography: (300 words minimum.)
Those who best knew Genesis would have described her, not as arrogant exactly, but as having a very certain concept of her own worth. When she'd walked the corridors of Hogwarts with a superior grace and poise, head held high, the statuesque beauty behaved as though she were above her peers only in the most literal sense of physical stature. That she had occasionally been late for curfew due to insisting the bronze eagle door knocker give her a more challenging riddle had more to do with mental exercise than with pride. A quintessential Ravenclaw, Genesis delighted in learning and took in with seeming ease not only what was offered on a scholastic platter, but astute observations of her classmates, professors, and surroundings. It wasn't a greater intelligence; it was perhaps greater curiosity, coupled with the fact that it was expected of her. The high-born Bennets were simply trained from infancy to notice details, to observe and absorb.

She could have been arranged in a high society marriage. It was expected of her class. Anticipated even, as she bloomed into a lovely young woman. And yet the eldest Bennet daughter remained untouched, and virtually untouchable, as a pristine marble sculpture in a museum might be admired but not attained by a private collector. On top of that, it was said the lady worked in some menial capacity. Potions and the like. Rumors circulated that perhaps the Bennet family had fallen on hard times in the decade since her graduation. And yet they still attended social functions and dressed in the finest modern trends. Even Genesis deigned to make an appearance when requested. Well, it was true that the Bennets had their odd habits and pursuits. Unnecessarily prolonged education was one. Dedicated polymaths, the lot of them, but it was forgivable as familial idiosyncrasies went. And it was also said Genesis went to great lengths to research and find the very best ingredients for potions. Who wouldn't want that at one's disposal, were one in need of a healer?

Option Two -
The snow had been falling steadily all morning and it didn't look like it was going to stop any time soon. Joshua Campbell scrunched his face up in a frown as he lifted his gaze to look to the sky. Snow. It really was quite a bother.

And it certainly didn't make it better that Diagon Alley seemed to be getting more and more crowded. Joshua sighed and pointed his wand at the large box that was currently placed on the doorstep of his shop. He had to get going. He had an order to deliver.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" The elderly man muttered and watched the box hover in the air for a moment. Honestly, did St. Mungo's really need that much tinsel? And with glitter of all things? He sighed again. If it hadn't been for the rather convincing stamp on the order, he would have been likely to believe it had been a prank by one of those orphaned rascals living up there.

Oh well, there was no point in waiting. Joshua deftly stirred the box down the doorstep and out onto the street, carefully levitating it above the heads of the crowd.

"Coming through! Coming through!" His voice sounded over the chatter of the crowd. "Keep out! Move ahead! Go on!" This was going way too slow. People were in the way and walking like they had all day! He huffed. Luckily the road was down hill.

"Coming through! Coming th--- arrrgh!" Joshua let out a loud shout as his feet suddenly slipped in the snow and sent him, the box, and several long strands of tinsel tumbling into the person who had been walking in front of him.

"For Merlin's sake!" Joshua muttered angrily as he hurried to his feet again, red and gold tinsel now decorating his black coat. "I am so sorry! This blasted snow!" He looked apologetic at the person he had crashed into.

Roleplay Response:
Snowflakes kissed her cheeks and eyelashes as she stepped outside. Genesis loved the winter. Such a time of contrasts, it always enlivened her. The hush of falling snow and the bustling of shopping and carolers; the snug warmth of her fur-lined cloak and kid gloves, and the crisp wind teasing at her hair and skirts; the warmth of the hot toddy she'd just imbibed heating her belly, throat, and tongue, and the air passing her lips and nostrils like steam from a dragon's breath as she exhaled into the frigid air.

Juxtapositions so fascinated and delighted her. Even though the cobblestoned street of the Alley was hectic and congested, Genesis couldn't resist indulging herself:  for a moment she slackened her pace and, shifting somewhat out of foot traffic's way, closed her eyes. She raised her face skyward, drowning out the din of voices to focus on the sensuous bliss that was icy, geometric perfection dusting her cheeks before melting against her --

She'd miscalculated. A jolt of surprise; air knocked from her lungs; then slush and sludge permeating her clothes. Pain followed.

"For Merlin's sake!" came a querulous voice just behind her. "Indeed," she remarked in annoyance. Genesis sat up with a wince, mellow demeanor as bruised as the rest of her. Her house elf, Minty, had just taken pains to launder all this. Genesis hated to see such efforts wasted. So unnecessary.

"I am so sorry," the accidental assailant continued, climbing to his feet. "This blasted snow!"

Genesis pressed her lips together to stall what would surely have been too hasty a reply; something along the lines of ungraciously pointing out that the inanimate snow offended her far less than one being too hasty and unmindful to keep one's feet. She stood, moving slowly to ascertain any true injury. Finding none upon reaching her full height of five-feet-and-ten, Genesis regarding the wizard fully. Old, and anxious. With... tinsel? Noting the parcels he carried were labeled for Mungo's, she signed inwardly and elected not to tell him off.

"Pray don't mention it."

Alright, her tone was gruff. She didn't approve of feigned cheer where she felt none. Her tailbone throbbed, and with her clothing wet and dirty, now she was cold. Genesis drew her wand to deal with the worst of it, then used it to help the old man regather his tinsel. "I take it you're short on time? Then you'll have my assistance."

It wasn't an offer. She would be accompanying the wizard to the hospital. With a potentially damaged coccyx, it was the necessary destination anyway.

Calyx is my first.

Biography: (100 words minimum.)
Much to the chagrin of the ultra-posh Benjamin and Susan Elfman, the post-Muggle war years saw their only son Levi eloping with and embracing the bohemian lifestyle of Abigail Rosenberg. Though the young woman came from a respectable enough family, Levi would never have elected on an extended gap year... one that carried on and on and on... were it not for Abigail's infectious free spirited ways. Most unorthodox.

It might have been no more than an inconvenience to Levi's parents and an embarrassment where society was concerned, but within the year a baby was involved. Susan in particular found the idea of her first grandchild roaming throughout Europe like some wandering vagabond unbearable, and wasn't shy of letting the trio know it throughout the years and/or Levi's infrequent visits home. (And she didn't care if the appropriate term was Roma or what they were really like, thank you very much, what was fine for some was not for her grandchild.)

Ferryn Affinity Calyx grew up reveling in such freedom. They traveled constantly, met fascinating people - both the magical and muggle varieties - and camped under the stars or in abandoned buildings. Anything in between.

It stopped suddenly, when she was about ten. Calyx didn't know why.

She suddenly lived a life of great restriction, in the care of her grandparents. Their opulent, stifling world was full of rules. Don't touch that. Stand up straight. Elbows off the table. Smile. Hush, mind your manners. Time for School. Calyx was compensated, if not outright bribed, by her grandmother in exchange for behaving properly. She didn't always tolerate it even then. Bored, that's what she was. And when bored, Calyx couldn't help but find small ways to rebel. Oh, she did have her own code of conduct and certain personal rules. She was just a little more stubborn, a little more flexible, when it came to others'.

Godric Park.

Overhead, the sky was a crisp blue, for once clear of the ever-pervasive spongy clouds and rain. The sun was a lemony-yellow presence, high in the Eastern sky, and in front of it zipped three broomsticks in a straight line, or something very like one. One... two..... three... the boys passed, their shouts of excitement echoing as they chased the snitch, a tiny shimmer reflecting the sunlight.

Far below was another, much smaller broomstick.

It trugged along the ground, hugging close to it like a sluggish choo choo train and occasionally shuttering in protest. This was because said stick was currently being occupied by a very small girl who was tugging upward on the front of it with all her might, trying to coax it into doing what it had been expressly designed NOT to do.

"John, I said wait up!" The tiny girl squealed, giving the broomstick another tug.

Begrudgingly, it drifted upward a foot, and then sank, depositing the troublesome girl safely on the ground. Janey Hurst was not pleased. In a huff, she hopped off the toy safety broom, grabbing it firmly and thrusting it handle first into the turf.

Her brother was such a beast. He NEVER let her play! She folded her arms, seething blue eyes fixing on another figure nearby.  "You!" She barked, much more sharply than she meant to.

"...Do you want to play?"

Roleplay Response:
It was a day she'd needed for quite some time. A break in the clouds, some sun on her skin at last. Grandma never sat in the sun; too worried over tanning - or worse, wrinkling. Calyx didn't care. Sunlight was good for people. Italians or Greeks, for example. They were out in the sun always, swarthy and happy and full of zest for life. Travel to the Mediterranean... that, she'd need to repeat. Once she was of age, she'd do precisely that and anything else she pleased, even if it was finding one of those secluded beaches she'd heard about where folk walked around completely nu--

"You!"

Calyx blinked, shaken from reverie by one of the young children playing nearby. One whose small face was a cocktail of fiery determination, no less.

Calyx raised her eyebrows questioningly. "Me, ma'am?" she replied wryly.

The child seemed to reconsider her approach. "...Do you want to play?"

Calyx's grey eyes studied the little girl with veiled amusement, gaze flitting briefly between her and the boys outpacing her on brooms. Why not?

She smiled and rose to her feet.

"Sure. What are we playing?"
