Prologue
Part I.
Part I.
Once upon a time, Abel had been told not to stare into the sun. The voice had faded but the words were there, etched into his memory.
”Hi Abel!”
Perhaps this was being blind. Blind was blue, a glittering azure painted in the gentle light of the yellow afternoon.
The Blueness blinked, and it grew, evolved as if sprouting, a face and hands and dress of pink tulle.
”I’m Goose and I’m six today and you are my best friend!
He should have started into the sun a long time ago.
Part II.
"Did you know that there’s the Sun and then there’s lots of big rock things that are called planets and the planets go around and around the sun and we live on the blue and green one!!”
His head was flopped in his arms and his eyes stared longingly at the backyard, muddied by the persistent rain storm. There were puddles hiding in the grass, waiting for running and rain boots and nautical adventures on tiny boats! He liked their tiny boats, even when Goldie said they weren’t real.
Goldie was scary but one day Goose and Abel would be Big Kids and nothing would be scary. That’s what Goose told him when he thought about the monsters under the bed. She didn’t always hear them, but they were there, waiting for him.
“Where does the Sun go when it rains?”
”Hmmmmm….”
“Hmmmmmmm…”
Sometimes they would do this for awhile, just hmming back and forth until their lips hurt and they couldn’t hmm anymore.
”HMMMMMMMM OK SO I THINK.
Goose stood up and bounced over cards and books and flopped on the bed. She jumped atop blankets and pillows arms stretched out, reaching for the sky.
”I AM THE SUN.
Abel already knew that.
”YOU ARE ALSO THE SUN!
Oh. Ok.
She pulled her blankets and the old scratchy quilt from the mattress and dragged them over to the window, tossing them over him. It was sort of nice under here. It felt like almost sleeping. Goose crawled under the blanket mountain, sitting in front of him criss cross applesauce. ”We’re still the sun, just under a big cloud blanket!”
“Cloud blankets are the best blankets. Can you tell me about the planets again?”
Part III.
Dinner with Goose was a GoodBad thing.
He was never very hungry and sometimes there was a chair for him and sometimes there wasn’t (Goose always had to ask Very Nicely and once or twice or maybe Thrice not so Very Nicely) but it was all ok because he liked sharing a chair with Goose even when they had to squish and Goose’s family was like a story book.
Cinders was the oldest and she was beautiful and she was bread baking and the minutes of sitting on the kitchen floor as the dough rose and the cobwebs under the counters when the bread took too long and they decided to spend the night in a tent on the floor waiting for it. The cobwebs would move to a breeze that did not exist, and sometimes he wondered if they were dancing.
One time in the summer, Goose and him had taken glasses of juice outside because it was hot and juice was cold and Hot Days and Juice meant water droplets on the cup. But they tried to balance the glass on a rock and it fell, and the glass shattered and drowned in the pale pink juice. Later when the glass had been cleaned up and Cinders had told them it was a very silly thing to do. Goose had told him she wanted to find glass like that. ”But not broken!!! And Pink and blue and yellow and all sorts of colors! It was so pretty Abel, not crayon pretty but...the Outside pretty. Morning pretty.” That was Goose’s brother. BrokennotBroken blue glass Pea.
Goldie was the scary one, worse than the monsters under the bed and fiery dragons, he hid behind Goose when he saw her because Goose wasn’t scared of anything, even the scariest things. Goldie was the piano he heard sometimes, distant and cold, and the Too Big Books that Goose couldn’t lift even if him and Darla and Karen helped.
Grandma Alice was yarn. She just was.
”--And that’s why Sunday Chicken Noodle Soup should be a new color!! What do you think Abel?”
“About the soup? I like the carrots!!”
Part IV.
”I just don’t know Abel look at the cloak it’s so black but not The Sky Late At Night It’s FABRIC BLACK and Fabric Black is so stuffy!!”
“Well…” Abel draped Goose’s Big Kid School Cloak over his shoulders. “I think it’s very warm--”
”Cinders would say that and being warm is nice but why can’t it be warm and yellow yellow is so much nicer and yellow IS a warm color it’s the every single summer day color black is just sleepy and boring!!!”
Goose flopped on her bed, surrounded by sweaters and shirts and socks and countless colors. Abel frowned. The sun was never sad.
“Ok Ok BUT.” he flopped next to her, very excited because he had a new idea and Goose was the idea’s one most of the time. “You can wear sweaters under the cloak! So you can be warm and yellow all at the same time! ”And I don’t have to wear the cloak all the time!”
“Only when it’s cold!”
”In the winter!
“And it’s not winter all the time!”
”Abel you’re right you’re a genius ok this is good! I still like Hogwarts school!”
“Is that what the Big Kid School’s name is?”
”Yes but I still like Big Kid School better that’s our name for it!!”
“...Is Big Kid School scary?”
”Hmmmm…
“Hmmmmmm….”
“HMMMMMMM. I’m almost...ENTIRELY that’s the word!! ok entirely sure it’s not scary because Pea is still there and Elsie used to teach there and she would never let monsters live in a castle and a bajillion of my cousins were there and they’re all a-ok so Big Kid Hogwarts School is not scary and good and exciting and we’ll have fun and maybe we’ll learn more about the planets that would be amazing and great!!”
Goose was normally right about these things, she knew lots of things maybe even almost everything. What did almost everything look like? He imagined it was one of those telescopes with all the swirly colors a Kaleidoscope yes that word!
What a good word. He would tell Goose later.
Part V.
Once upon a time, Goose and Abel read a book about a girl wandering the earth (the blue green rock that floated through space), looking for her mother.
Later, Abel had wondered about the word that he kept seeing in that book, over and over in the perfect Stuffy Black Ink, family. The Book Girl’s family was not like Goose’s, it was quiet and small and it seemed so strange and not right and they both decided that it was not a very good book.
Family was the thorns in the woods and the quiet night times and so loud the sound reached the sky reunions. Family was Cinders and dancing cobwebs and brokennotBroken Blue glass Pea and Golide the fiery dragon and Yarn Alice and the boy with feathers for hair and the manticore that Abel ran away from VERY fast but Goose loved and all the cousins and all of the happy chaos that glowed like candles.
Sometimes he wondered what it would feel like to get hugs from Goose’s chaos fairy tale family instead of being ignored and said to not exist which they both decided was SUPER DUPER RUDE of them and made him sad sometimes but he didn’t mind so much really!
Abel had the sun, and that was enough.
→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.
House Request: Hufflepuff!
Personality: A hyperactive honey bee that would never sting, Goose sees the world in colors and shapes and smiles. She is in awe with the bright and the beautiful, which is just about everything. Her speech and motion is a constant crescendo, her thoughts are presented in rainbow ramblings, she is a sunshine ray no matter the weather. Imaginative to the point of being naive, her hubris is her happiness, her lack of knowledge of the workings of the Big Kid Grown Up World, but for now Goose is laughter and imaginary friends, macaroni art and crayons, and the Capital Letter Colors that make up every single thing.
She is incredibly loyal to her extensive family, loyal to the point that in Goose’s child eyes they are story book kings and queens, and she is oblivious to the faults and failings of her cousins and siblings. It does not make her unobservant to the world around her, but she sees everything through golden lenses, and everything is happy and everything is good.
But all dreamers must wake.

Option Two:
Goose had discovered exactly two things today, which was very good as this was a school and she was here to learn lots of New and Exciting things!
Thing One was that squinting at flowers was not very helpful. At least, it wasn’t helpful for drawing flowers unless she wanted to find paint and paint one of those very old paintings where everything was dots unless you stood Very Far Away and then those dots became things! The things were almost always ladies without faces with big hats and weird houses and little flower dots but if you looked Very Close everything was dots again! If you looked Very Close at flowers they were not dots, just color.
She also discovered that this flower was Not Crayon Beet Magenta and Not Ruby With A Little Tiny Bit of Yellow If You Squint Red but it was sort of both and sort of not and it was Lots of colors put together and mixed and baked like a cake!
Cake would be good. Cake would always be good.
Goose found her Cold Grape Juice On a Rainy Day Purple crayon and drew little lines on the Ruby With A Little Tiny Bit of Yellow If You Squint Red petals atop a Book With The Story About The Turtle Green. “Oh no!” she cried out, staring at the drawing. It was the wrong Red, she should have known that there was no yellow in this flower! This was the wrong kind of being silly it was the silly that was sad and not a Thing that could be laughed about.
“Ummmmm. Ok Ok MAYBE if I find another red I can go over the petals with a better red than there will be no yellow but there should be yellow in everything--”
”Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare.”
“Yes wow Hi!!!” She jumped over three rows of flowers and leaped over two rows and presented her crayon flower to the boy.
“Is this the wrong red I think it is if you squint there’s yellow can you squint and see if there’s yellow??”
