Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Madelynn Sybille Fox

Birthday: 11 November 1952 -- Aged 14

Hometown: Epping, Essex, England (primary residence); Amiens, France (secondary residence)

Bloodline: Pureblood

Magical Strength (pick one): Divination
Magical Weakness (pick one): Conjuring/Summoning

Year (pick two): 4th year; 5th year

Biography:
It all started when a young wizard, Nathan Fox, got a job at the Ministry of Magic. He was an ambassador of sorts, stationed in France for an assignment. There, he met a young witch, Mirabelle Cadieux, who worked for the French Ministry for Magic. She was an auror who was paired with Nathan while he was on assignment. After getting to know one another, things seemed right for both of them and a grand marriage soon followed.

About six months after marriage, Mirabelle fell pregnant. The pregnancy was rough. The birth of her daughter was worse. The infant was born early by about 10 weeks. She was small but strong. Little Madelynn fought and persevered, all before she was even six months old. She thrived when many others would have not done as well. Unfortunately for Mirabelle, the rough pregnancy and near-fatal birth (for both mother and baby), rendered her infertile.

Madelynn Sybille Fox earned her names from both parents. Nathan provided her first name that had been anglicized. Mirabelle had a chuckle at the name as a ‘madeline’ is a small cake in France, but she went with it. Mirabelle provided her middle name, Sybille, which is a French name meaning ‘seer’ or ‘psychic’. The Cadieux Family were all quite gifted with strong divining abilities. She hoped her daughter would follow suit.

As Madelynn grew, she was the light of her parents’ lives. For her younger years, her mother took a lengthy sabbatical from the French ministry to care for her, while her father continued to work at the British Ministry. The small family settled into a stately home in Epping, England. Given that she was her parents’ only child, they staked everything they’d hoped for in a family and children all on the shoulders of the young girl. She did not disappoint or buckle from the weight of her parents’ expectations. It was noted, quickly, that she did have a talent for divination.

Once she reached primary school age, she was enrolled in a local muggle school. Both of her parents had attended muggle primary schools for their formative education. As she neared the age when she would be attending magic school, there was a small debate between her parents as to which school she would attend. Her father, of course, had been educated at Hogwarts and wanted his daughter to go there as well. Her mother, a true Frenchwoman, had been educated at Beauxbatons Academy. The compromise was that she would attend three years in the French school and then transfer to Hogwarts for her fourth year and beyond.

Growing up, especially in the care of her mother primarily, she became fluent in both English and French. Her mother would often challenge the very young witch in different practices of divination. She excelled as much as a young child could. At Beauxbatons, she honed some of these skills even further. However, it is now time for her fourth year of schooling and, per the agreement with her parents, would be transferring to Hogwarts.

Her three years in France saw the young student somewhat lonely and isolated. She did not make a single friend and she tended to spend her time practicing the different areas of magic. Madelynn was an exceptional student. She was relatively book-smart; however, her emotional intelligence was well beyond her years. She was able to look into herself, guide herself when nobody else would befriend her, and she found that she enjoyed learning. Madelynn also has a high curiosity drive. If she ever had something, even remotely, present a conundrum, she would research it until she felt she could practically hold a class on this one subject.

While she demonstrates a unique ability to ‘read’ a person, she does sometimes misinterpret social cues. However, when she messes up, she taps into her emotional intelligence to recognize she was wrong, and subsequently, right her wrong. Introspective and skilled, she enjoys finding new ways to challenge the limits of her knowledge.

She is excited to attend Hogwarts. After spending three years virtually alone, the prospect of having a fresh start with new students and staff is both nerve-wracking and absolutely thrilling. Having found that, in the end, she did not enjoy the isolation she imposed upon herself and has high hopes of making friends and meeting people. Clean slate, fresh new robes, and two new animal companions (a tortoiseshell cat named Penny and a handsome Barred Owl named Pierre), this young lady is ready to take Hogwarts by storm.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

House Request: Ravenclaw

Personality:
Madelynn is shy, quiet, and reserved. She is often wary of meeting new people, though she is excited to try and change this about herself when attending Hogwarts. She is adopting something of a ‘fake it until you make it’ attitude to her future at Hogwarts. She puts a lot of faith in divination, especially from her grandmother in France. Madelynn is still honing her own divining abilities, so she looks to the elders on her mother’s side of the family. Sometimes, however, she doesn’t want to know what may be in store for her. This is true of her future with Hogwarts. Instead, she is going in ‘blind’ and while that frightens her, she wants the chance to make her own future.

Madelynn often looks at the floor when passing people, so as to not offend them or make eye contact. Away from her family, she often feels like an annoyance or even a burden. Though her family has never made her feel this way, some of the students at Beauxbatons would give her this feeling. It often came as a result of ‘reading’ them; it was never explicitly said to her, though there is the problem that she sometimes misinterprets social cues. This is especially because she attended primary school in England, and the French students had a different overall demeanor than those she’d met in England.

She does not often open up to people. It seems that she prefers to be mysterious, but it is more of a self-preservation reaction. If nobody knows truly knows her, and she never lets them in, then she cannot suffer as much when people disappoint her or even seem to despise her.

Her head is constantly swimming in questions and ruminations. This can give her the outward effect of being air-headed or unintelligent, when in actuality, she is constantly learning and taking in knowledge. Sometimes she asks strange questions, and this often results in giggles from her fellow students. She listens, observes, and absorbs her surroundings. She is eager about transferring to Hogwarts, though she is frightened she will have much the same experience as she did at Beauxbatons- isolation, loneliness, and fear of failing.

Appearance:
Standing a petite 150cm, about 4’11”, this slim young lady has straight, dark brown hair that hits her waist. Her eyes are a luminous light brown with a touch of jade in the right lighting. She is sometimes self-conscious about being shorter than many of her classmates. She inherited most of her appearance from her mother except for her eye color, that was all her father. Her face is sprinkled with freckles, which she does adore about her looks. She prefers to go without make-up, as she doesn’t desire to hide her freckles. While she has some natural beauty, she is not exceptionally so, and certainly doesn’t believe herself beautiful in any sense- just average. While she is fluent in English and French, she does hold a slight French accent, especially since she grew up with her mother as her primary caretaker, and attended the school in France for three years.

Option 2:

That rat of his was in for it now.

The gray little rascal had disappeared from his clutches at breakfast. Again.

Before Hugh even knew what was happening, Merlin had shot across the floor, somehow managing to avoid all the feet walking across the hall and had escaped through the open doors.

Which meant that Hugh was now stomping through rows of flowers and other various flora, searching for the small creature. It was like the rat knew Hugh was allergic to most flowers. Merlin always chose to run to the gardens whenever he got away from Hugh. It was as if the rat did not want to have him for an owner.

Hugh had named his pet Merlin because he had hoped the powerful name would give the rat more incentive to be more than a rat. Not that he expected Merlin to change into a wizard or anything, but rats were just so...useless, for the most part. With a name like Merlin, Hugh thought it might give the rat purpose.

The only purpose Merlin seemed to have was getting away from Hugh as often as possible.

As the fifth year trudged into the second row of flowers, not taking much care to avoid trampling the first row, he felt the first sneeze building up pressure in his nose and behind his eyes.

"You blasted rat! Where are you?"

He pulled apart a section of bright red flowers; he didn't know what they were called because he despised flowers, and ducked his head low to peer into the depths of the flowerbed. It was moving closer in proximity to the flowers that finally did it. Hugh took in three great breaths and then let out an almighty sneeze. It was strong enough to disturb some of the dirt on the ground before him.

Groaning, he stood up again and wiped his nose on his sleeve. It was as he was turning his head, his nose running up and down his arm, that movement in his peripheral vision caught his attention. Normally one who preferred to put his best face forward, Hugh was a bit embarrassed to be caught wiping his runny nose on his robes.

Nevertheless, Hugh put on his best haughty voice. albeit a bit thickly with his plugged nose and said, "Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

Roleplay Response:
Wandering around, learning the school’s many features on her own, had now become a favorite activity. Madelynn enjoyed finding new sunny spots for reading a book, practicing spells, and doing homework. It made her feel alive to be outside, enjoying the fresh air, and making time for herself to just ponder the many things flowing through her curious young mind.

Today she’d been wandering around some of the gardens. From a distance, she’d noticed a slightly older boy who seemed to have lost something. She presumed this from his frantic movements. Then again, suddenly dipping his head straight into some of the flowers, this seemed as though he was searching for something. Maddie observed him for a moment or two, her head cocked to the left a little, taking in the scene. On one hand, she wondered if he might like help. On the other, she wasn’t sure if she should bother him.

But, before she knew it, her feet were moving of their own accord, slowly towards him. Her mind became a little more frantic. She was something of a loner and, at least in this moment, she was enjoying her time to herself. Still, she’d resolved to try and actually interact with others. And it seemed her mind was directing her feet to shuffle forward towards the boy. But then he popped up once he’d noticed her. He seemed annoyed.

From his nasally voice and the fact he’d used his robes as a tissue, she reasonably determined that maybe there was something about the flowers affecting him. When he’d addressed her, her eyes widened, feeling that she’d offended him. Quickly, she looked at the ground, contemplating running away. But, again, her subconscious seemed to overrule her frightened, conscious mind. Her mouth opened and closed for a moment, resembling a fish out of water.

“Uh… are you looking for something?” Her voice trembled a little. “I… I can help?” Madelynn posed this as a question. She was asking him if he wanted help, though leaving the door open for him to decline if he wished to be left alone. Maddie stood there for a moment, shuffling her feet. Her conscious mind was yelling at her to run. Her subconscious forced her to lightly dance on the spot but be otherwise glued to the ground. Her mind was racing, running through as many scenarios of how this could play out as possible.

“Wha… what are you looking for?” She finally uttered after having a moment to process what her mind had gotten her into. There was no backing out now. She’d have to finish the interaction to save face. Madelynn was starting to tremble a bit. It wasn’t unusual for her to become anxious when interacting with her peers. Finally, she looked up and attempted to make eye contact before letting the corners of her mouth perk up and create a small smile, trying to be reassuring in some way.
