Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.
Name: Cassandra Chant

Birthday: 26 May 1927

Hometown: Tinworth, Cornwall

Bloodline: Pureblood

Magical Strength (pick one): Divination

Magical Weakness (pick one): Conjuring & Summoning

Year (pick two): 6th, 7th

Biography:
Family “history” had it that any time a set of twins were born into the Thatcher family, one of them would get most of the magic for both. Cassandra knew this story well, since various older family members had been telling it her whole life. She wasn’t exactly sure it was true, but that didn’t stop her from worrying about it.

On top of those worries about her twin Caspian possibly getting all HER magic, Great-Grandmother Thatcher liked to pull her aside and whisper to her the story of how the LAST twin named Cassandra in the family had been a powerful seer. Each time she would tell the story as if Cass had never heard it before and then stare at her inquisitively until Cass got uncomfortable and excused herself. She wasn’t sure what seers were supposed to look a certain way, but Grandmother seemed to think that if she stared long enough it would be obvious.

One might think that her parents would be eager for her to excel, given these two auspicious circumstances. One wouldn’t necessarily be wrong, as long as the excelling was in the areas of being pleasant to look at, hosting enjoyable dinner parties, and laughing just the right amount at a man’s jokes.

Luckily for Cassandra, it did not require much effort for her to excel. She had a natural talent for magic that ensured she could slide by with suitable grades without too much studying. She wanted to make sure she was better than Caspian at whatever the challenge of the moment was, but she drew the line at sitting in a library reading books all day and writing feet of parchment about the properties of a well executed summoning spell. She was lucky if she could sit still for a whole lesson.

It was clear quite early on that Cassandra had considerably more energy than your average “accomplished lady”. Her mother Alice, in what she probably considered a stroke of genius at the time, enrolled her and some of her cousins in private dance lessons. Cass would then be sure to expend her energy becoming graceful and elegant. The plan backfired when Cass led a mutiny with the other girls and persuaded the instructor to give them tap lessons instead.

Her other outlet for energy was accomplished by stealing her brother Caspian’s broom. It was a really nice broom and he wasn’t using it anyway, or at least not as well as she could use it. Cass just had to be sure that any house elves that caught her in the act were suitably bribed to keep the information to themselves.

Going to Hogwarts opened a whole new world of Quidditch and Dueling for her, since her mother couldn’t forbid her from signing up for official school activities. At least, if Alice had tried that, Cass didn’t hear about it. In fact, she wouldn’t put it past either of her parents to attempt writing a scary sounding letter requesting that the school keep her from moving about at any speed faster than a purposeful walk. That was what her father did, after all. He went to the Ministry and talked to a lot of important people and convinced them to do what would make his clients the most money. Cass had read some of the letters on his desk before. He was good at writing scary letters.

Cassandra couldn’t wait to get on the train for her sixth year at Hogwarts. Everyone warned her that sixth year was much harder, as you had to start preparing for your N.E.W.T's, but she didn't care. She was hoping to finally win the Quidditch Cup, which would make it the best year yet. On top of that, she had received a letter from a friend over the summer who had kissed a boy at camp. Not to be outdone, Cass had immediately starting making a list of boys who might not be totally disgusting so she could work on getting her first kiss, too.

It was shaping up to be a pretty good year.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

House Request: Gryffindor

Personality:
Cassandra’s main motivation in life is to be famous. She’s not sure exactly what she should be famous for, but that’s just a minor detail. She likes attention, and she likes being the best, not just better than Caspian (but that’s good, too). Many things come easily to her, so she thinks that it’s natural that she be the best at something. She does reasonably well in school, just skating by on natural talent that is mostly due to a good memory. She does not like to put forth much effort toward her students and will just avoid anything that seems hard.

She enjoys physical activity, especially Quidditch. She is naturally coordinated, but also willing to work harder because she enjoys the effort. She also likes dance, despite the tap incident. She discovered Quidditch at school and loves it. Quidditch is the perfect outlet for her daredevil side.

Cassandra is very outgoing and mostly friendly. She wants people to like her, so is usually quick to apologize for her (frequent) transgressions. It is not unusual for her to say exactly the wrong thing at the wrong moment, since her mouth is often ahead of her brain. Her outgoing and loud nature can also prove annoying to some people, but she means well. She is also pretty competitive any anything she judges to be a competition. This tends to negatively affect her friendships, but that’s an unintentional side effect and she tries to find a balance.

She does not usually hold grudges against people she judges to be generally good. However, there are hard lines people can cross and earn her enmity. She has little grace for hypocrites and backstabbers. Cass lives her life as an open book and expects that others do the same. Disloyalty or outright betrayal of a friend can earn someone a place on her bad side.

Appearance: Medium length wavy dark blonde hair, brown eyes, and an easy smile. She is a bit taller than average for her age, and lanky.

(Crybaby James)

Cassandra jumped back, startled, as James rounded on her. She flinched noticeably as he yelled at her.
"WHAT! Haven't you ever seen a loser before? Why don't you just take a picture!”
Her mouth moved wordlessly for a moment before she could summon words to answer him. Her first instinct was to shout back, but then she saw the tears collecting in his eyes.

He had made a spectacular failure at the match today. Well, actually it wouldn't have been such a big deal if it hadn't been the shot that lost them the game. It was easy to see why he'd be upset about it. What do you say to someone in that position? She could try to write it off or tell him that there'd be other years and matches, but Quidditch was a pretty big deal here and no one was likely to forget about the botched shot for a while.

Her face softened.

"I wasn't staring at you. I mean, I don't think you're a loser. I was just on my way to the loo, actually.”

Poor kid.

"It's not your fault, you know...about the game. Other people missed perfectly good shots, too, right? Yours was just the last one."

Merlin, she probably wasn't helping any, really. Probably best to just change the subject or shut up. She felt her cheeks burning. How was she supposed to make him feel better instead of worse?

"I think I'm going to head up to the common room now, actually.  The noise is giving me a headache.  Do you want to walk with me?"

Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.
Name: Beatrix Annabella Blythe (reapplying, since I didn't post as returning)

Birthday: 22 December 1926

Hometown: Tinworth, Cornwall

Bloodline:
Pureblood

Magical Strength (pick one):
Charms

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Transfiguration

Year (pick two): 4th, 3rd

Biography:
Lysander Blythe and Annabella Thatcher made quite an odd couple, at least by their family's standards. The fact that they were first cousins who were set up to marry before they could even walk was quite normal. The shocking part was that they seemed to love each other, deeply. They could hardly wait to be married.

They were overjoyed at the birth of their first child, Tess, even though it wasn't the son they hoped for. When they found out they were finally expecting again, four years later, their happiness only grew. Unfortunately, the happiness didn't last. Annabella tragically passed away after delivering her daughter.

Lysander was devastated. Annabella had been his world. He never particularly cared for children, he was only interested in them as a part of their family. Without Annabella there was no family, there was just him and two girls that he hardly knew what to do with. He threw himself into his work instead, and spent increasing amounts of time overseas on business trips.

The girls were left at the ancestral family home, where enough of their extended family resided that Lysander could convince himself that they were loved and well looked after.

In reality, most of the adults there were doing a poor job of looking after their own offspring, with little time to spare for extra kids. Their care was mostly left up to the house elves and various governesses.

Tess was a bright and sociable child who went out of her way to interact with cousins and family. She was nearly 5 when her mother passed away and she had memories of what family life was supposed to be like.

Beatrix wasn't so lucky. She was much more shy, either by nature or the circumstances of her life, and had more trouble making friends. She preferred her own daydreams and books to the company of others. Her cousins were mostly loud and rude, and she went out of her way to avoid them.

The family library had a reasonable selection of books for her, and if she wanted more her father was more than happy to appease her material needs by providing her with money to buy more. Beatrix loved fiction. No book was too fanciful or adventurous for her. She loved to read about secret fairy worlds, magical dragons that whisked you away to their dragon kingdoms, anything different than home. She even snuck out and got herself a library card to the local muggle library, where she discovered a whole new world of books.

Tess was the only person that Beatrix loved more than her books. Tess was also the only one who would join her for invisible sword fights in the garden, or a pirate adventure on the beach. Tess unfortunately was gone off to Hogwarts far too soon and then only available for adventuring on school breaks.

Beatrix was glad to finally leave for Hogwarts, even if initially only to spend more time with Tess and less time with elderly relatives. She even found friends there. Apparently not all children were as stupid and mean as the ones she had the misfortune to be related to. School is beginning to bring her out of her shell. She doesn't really enjoy the school part of being at Hogwarts, mostly because it has significantly reduced the amount of time she has to read for pleasure, but having friends is turning out to be pretty nice.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

Personality:
Beatrix is a very responsible person, despite seeming absent-minded or spacey to most. Growing up without anyone necessarily looking after her, it was important that she learn to keep track of herself. She developed this sense of responsibility early in life, when it became apparent that no one else was going to bother with her.  She is usually a very quiet person and not particularly outgoing.  The exception to this is when she feels that someone is being wronged or taken advantage of. She is very committed to protecting those that she perceives as being weak or outcasts. She wants to emulate the heroes she reads about.

Beatrix should probably be resentful of her family, but in general she just wants someone to pay attention to her. She loves her father dearly, despite feeling abandoned by him. There are many family members that she is not very fond of, but she would never admit this. She is very bound by the feeling of familial duty they instilled in her from an early age, and would never want to be seen as less than loyal.

Her best friend is her sister, Tess. Unfortunately, Tess is nearly 5 years older than Beatrix and thus went off to Hogwarts when Beatrix was only 6, depriving her of her favorite playmate and the only constant family member in her life. Beatrix would beg to be able to get on that horrible train with her, but of course that was never an option. Going to Hogwarts was the most exciting moment in Beatrix's life, not because she particularly cared about magic, but because she was finally not going to be left behind. She was very sad when Tess graduated out of Hogwarts last term, but being left at Hogwarts is much better than being left at home.

Beatrix is pretty bright and doesn't have much trouble with school, but lacks the dedication and drive to really excel. She isn’t especially proficient at any area of magic or academics. She would rather read for pleasure than knowledge, and is often distracted by daydreams during class.

Appearance:
Medium length wavy blonde hair, brown eyes, and an easy smile. She is small for her age and often mistaken for being a year or two younger than she is.

House Request: Gryffindor or Hufflepuff. Beatrix is maybe what some people would call "nerdy" but is not particularly interested in knowledge or learning, and doesn't have any particular ambitions in life.
