Maeve Eileen Beatriz Rafferty had two middle names because both of her grandmothers wanted a girl named after them, and her parents were definitely not having another child after her. She was already more than a handful.

For her entire life, Maeve has called Hogsmeade her home. Their house was on the bigger side of medium, and they made use of every inch of it. Every available surface was covered in half-finished puzzles, Maeve's toys and tiny trinkets she "found", huge textbooks, board games, magazines, sticky notes with scribbles only they understood, and interesting souvenirs from their travels. Any other empty space was allotted to their five cats, along with the ones that they fostered.

Maybe other only children were lonely, but Maeve rarely was. It wasn't uncommon for one of her parents to be gone, her father on expeditions to study ancient runes and her mother attending conferences, but they always made sure one of them was at home with her. They made sure she didn't feel left out, readily including her in every conversation they could and letting her "help" with their work, even though she couldn't quite understand the complex charts and symbols yet.

Besides, Maeve was very good at entertaining herself when she needed to. A broken appliance, a cat, a puzzle, a comic book or magazine, a cool rock or bug in the backyard, or a drawing could keep her occupied for hours. She often found trouble around the house too, much to her parents' chagrin.

Maeve is eager to spread her wings at Hogwarts and explore the castle. She's not as eager as some of her friends are, though. She's no fool; she knows that school means more homework.

House Request:
Surprise me, but not Gryffindor please!

Personality:
Tell us a bit about your character’s personality (likes, dislikes, fears, etc.) What are they like on a good day versus a bad one? Is your character particularly cheerful? Do they hate sunlight?

Maeve is a bright child who, when engaged, soaks up new information like a sponge. She believes that she is theoretically capable of anything and everything.

The problem is that her interests often don't align with those of the adults around her. She is driven by curiosity and her own whims, not the need to make anyone proud. Her ambition isn't spread evenly; it only comes out when she's really interested and is barely detectable in other situations.

One of the worst things Maeve can be is bored. She will combat that boredom however she sees fit, even if it means she gets into trouble. She is filled with ideas both good and bad, and always has a  plan or trick up her sleeve.

It's never been difficult for Maeve to make new friends. She's sociable and has no problem approaching new people. Maeve is far from the most empathetic child, but she does have a sense of loyalty that shows when it's most needed. She watches out for her close friends and expects them to do the same.

At her best, she is curious, playful, eccentric, brave, and loyal to her friends. At her worst, she is stubborn, troublesome, selectively lazy, opportunistic, and overconfident.

Appearance:
Briefly describe your character's appearance (hair color, build, stature, etc.) What effect does it have on their personality? For example, does the shy Ravenclaw girl secretly dye her hair black because she hates her natural blonde? Does the curly-haired Gryffindor use charms to hide his freckles?

Maeve is not a particularly special looking child, average in weight, height, and overall appearance. She has pale skin (with scraped, bruised knees, more often than not), blue eyes, and a big, crooked grin. Her blonde hair (that is darkening into a more brown color as she gets older) is somewhere between chin-length and shoulder-length. She would like it shorter, but loses the fight with her mother every time and doesn’t think it’s worth the upset that would come with cutting it on her own. Maeve absolutely loathes her uniform. She finds it stuffy and restrictive. More often than not her robes will be an absolute mess.

Option 2:

That rat of his was in for it now.

The gray little rascal had disappeared from his clutches at breakfast. Again.

Before Hugh even knew what was happening, Merlin had shot across the floor, somehow managing to avoid all the feet walking across the hall and had escaped through the open doors.

Which meant that Hugh was now stomping through rows of flowers and other various flora, searching for the small creature. It was like the rat knew Hugh was allergic to most flowers. Merlin always chose to run to the gardens whenever he got away from Hugh. It was as if the rat did not want to have him for an owner.

Hugh had named his pet Merlin because he had hoped the powerful name would give the rat more incentive to be more than a rat. Not that he expected Merlin to change into a wizard or anything, but rats were just so...useless, for the most part. With a name like Merlin, Hugh thought it might give the rat purpose.

The only purpose Merlin seemed to have was getting away from Hugh as often as possible.

As the fifth year trudged into the second row of flowers, not taking much care to avoid trampling the first row, he felt the first sneeze building up pressure in his nose and behind his eyes.

"You blasted rat! Where are you?"

He pulled apart a section of bright red flowers; he didn't know what they were called because he despised flowers, and ducked his head low to peer into the depths of the flowerbed. It was moving closer in proximity to the flowers that finally did it. Hugh took in three great breaths and then let out an almighty sneeze. It was strong enough to disturb some of the dirt on the ground before him.

Groaning, he stood up again and wiped his nose on his sleeve. It was as he was turning his head, his nose running up and down his arm, that movement in his peripheral vision caught his attention. Normally one who preferred to put his best face forward, Hugh was a bit embarrassed to be caught wiping his runny nose on his robes.

Nevertheless, Hugh put on his best haughty voice. albeit a bit thickly with his plugged nose and said, "Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

Any other day, in order to get Maeve to leave the Great Hall, you would have to grab her and haul her away from her breakfast. However, she’d been struck by the need to go to the gardens. She followed her impulse, thinking that maybe there was something extra special lurking under the dirt that day.

She was lying on her stomach, blue eyes carefully tracing a beetle, when a sneezing boy disturbed her peace. She stuck her elbow in the dirt and rested her head on her palm, snickering at his antics. The fact that he didn't find it funny made it even more so.

The beetle had skittered away while she was laughing. She frowned slightly, turning her full attention on the boy.

"Heya, Humphrey, you sick?" She didn't wait for an answer. The truth was in the pudding - or, in this case, the snot-covered sleeve. "Y'know, my dad's an experienced healer-" A lie. Aidan Rafferty couldn't even stand the sight of a scraped elbow. "-And he says the best cure for the common cold is nature's medicine."

Nature's medicine = dirt and a little bit of worm.

"No side effects like pepperup. Trust me, Harvey, you'll feel better instantly."

Maeve scooped up a fistful of dirt and rose to her feet. “C’mon. You gotta eat it if you wanna feel better.” She lunged with her fist raised, as if she were preparing to chase him with the bugs.

Biography: (100 words minimum.)

Maeve Eileen Beatriz Rafferty had two middle names because both of her grandmothers wanted a child named after them, and her parents were definitely not planning on having any more children after her.

She was born to two academics; Aidan Rafferty was an Ancient Runes translator and Elisa Rafferty was an Arithmancy professor. Perhaps other only children felt lonely, but when her parents were around, Maeve rarely was. Her parents included her in every conversation she wanted to be involved in, never talking down to her. Even though she didn’t have a playmate, she was rarely bored.

It didn’t take much to entertain Maeve, anyway. She was fine by herself when her parents were busy, searching for bugs and frogs in the backyard or rocks to add to her collection, taking naps, reading comics, and going through science magazines.

Roleplay:
Reply as your character to the following:

Godric Park.

Overhead, the sky was a crisp blue, for once clear of the ever-pervasive spongy clouds and rain. The sun was a lemony-yellow presence, high in the Eastern sky, and in front of it zipped three broomsticks in a straight line, or something very like one. One... two..... three... the boys passed, their shouts of excitement echoing as they chased the snitch, a tiny shimmer reflecting the sunlight.

Far below was another, much smaller broomstick.

It trugged along the ground, hugging close to it like a sluggish choo choo train and occasionally shuttering in protest. This was because said stick was currently being occupied by a very small girl who was tugging upward on the front of it with all her might, trying to coax it into doing what it had been expressly designed NOT to do.

"John, I said wait up!" The tiny girl squealed, giving the broomstick another tug.

Begrudgingly, it drifted upward a foot, and then sank, depositing the troublesome girl safely on the ground. Janey Hurst was not pleased. In a huff, she hopped off the toy safety broom, grabbing it firmly and thrusting it handle first into the turf.

Her brother was such a beast. He NEVER let her play! She folded her arms, seething blue eyes fixing on another figure nearby.  "You!" She barked, much more sharply than she meant to.

"...Do you want to play?"

Roleplay Response:
“Would you like one of those brooms, Mae? We could get you one for your birthday,” her ma called out to her from a nearby bench, watching the boys play. Next to his wife, Maeve’s daddy made some sort of noise that probably meant he agreed, but he was mostly absorbed in his book.

Maeve turned around to shake her head no and then went back to what she was doing before. As the other children were playing their games around her, Maeve was quietly crouching in the grass, blue eyes studying the ground intently. Her fingers were digging through the dirt, searching for cool bugs.

She was mostly coming up empty. It was hard to search when the ground wasn’t wet - that was one of the reasons she didn’t really like it when the weather was so ”nice.”

The other girl's dramatics were easily ignored until she called out to her. Maeve slowly lifted her head and peered inquisitively at the strange girl. After thinking it over for a second she decided that no, she did not really feel like playing, but she also didn’t feel like dealing with whatever the girl would say if she said so.

“...Alright. But I’m not gettin’ on that thing,” Maeve said, pointing at the small broom with her dirt-covered fingers. Playing on the broom didn’t seem like much fun, just an awful lot more work than it was worth. “And I ain’t runnin’, either. I don't do that.”

Her conditions were non-negotiable. Maeve would not do anything she didn’t want to do.
