Ding!

His eyes darted left and then right before he fully realised that he was alone. Akash took a deep breath and forced a friendly smile onto his face before popping up from behind the counter to greet the customer. He had seen his parents and his older sisters do this thousands of times. Even he had served customers many times before, but never unsupervised. He kept the smile on his face as he considered calling out for his father who was probably somewhere behind the store but decided against it. This was his time to prove himself.

“Welcome to Kermani’s!” That was all he managed to get out as he nodded at the woman on the other side of the counter. Despite the bravado, Akash was still trying to overcome his shyness and speaking to strangers was always difficult. He could tell her that they had the best Bengali food in Wizarding London, which he certainly believed was true but Dad had always warned him against making claims he could not prove.

“Can I take your order?”

“I haven’t got a menu,” the woman said with a serious tone. Most probably wondering why she was being served by a boy who barely looked 13 rather than an actual adult.

“Sorry,” Akash mumbled, bending to grab a menu and sliding it across the counter to the customer. He waited patiently, bouncing on the balls of his feet. He wanted so desperately to show his parents that he could be trusted in the shop alone but if the woman didn't hurry up then his parents would return and inevitably try and step in. Or worse, his older sisters would return and try to take credit for something he did. He gulped, watching the woman slowly read through the menu.

“Can I recommend something?” He waited for her eyes to meet his. “You know, chef’s recommendation?” He wasn’t a chef but working in a restaurant was all about charm. At least that’s what his sisters thought.

“No.”

Akash furrowed his brow as the woman continued perusing the menu. What an odd way to go through life. No understanding of the menu, not willing to take recommendations. He knew that his father would have made the recommendation anyway but he was still nervous about something going horribly wrong and his parents banning him from ever being alone in the shop.

“Ok, I’m ready to order.”

Her voice was still dry but Akash didn’t care. He grinned excitedly as he grabbed his notepad and pencil to make sure he got everything right.

“Wonderful! What can I get for y-”

“Akash!” The words could barely leave his mouth before Aisha, his oldest sister, swooped in front of him. “You know you’re not allowed to serve customers by yourself!” she hissed before turning to the customer and promptly taking her order.

“But -- but --” He knew there was no use protesting. She was older, smarter, more confident. He tried to hide the disappointed look on his face so he stared intensely at the floor as Aisha managed to charm the customer who had been so abrupt with him.

He stood to attention at the sound of his sister’s snapped fingers.

“I know, I know.” He muttered. “I’ll go and get mum.”

If he couldn’t even take an order there was no way he could be trusted to handle the food. Akash sighed as he slumped outside to the back entrance of the restaurant to locate his mother. He’d really missed Camp Loki for this. Akash rolled his eyes.

Whatever.

Option I:

Why would anyone throw a party in the dungeons? Akash couldn’t see any reason why as he wandered through the dingy halls searching for a sign of anything remotely interesting happening. He had been told that there was a party taking place and in his challenge to get over his shyness, he had decided to attend.

Unfortunately, it looked like he had either confused the location or someone had lied to him because he couldn’t find a single person, especially someone who looked like a partygoer. He stopped in his tracks as he heard oncoming footsteps and sped around the corner, hoping to find someone who looked cool enough to know where the party was.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The little girl was clearly not invited to the party. Who would invite a first year to a party? He was slightly disappointed but she looked distressed so Akash decided to help her out. The castle was confusing enough for him, let alone a little first year.

“I… I haven’t seen her.” He cleared his throat. “Even if she was here, ghosts aren’t always that scary, you know?” He smiled, trying his best to look comforting but not knowing what to say.

“She might be a nice ghost,” he clarified, knowing intuitively that a nice ghost wouldn’t choose to haunt the dungeons of all places.
