Biography: (100 words minimum.)

Cal’s entire life had always been a clash of two distinct worlds.

His father was Scottish, his mother American. His father was magical, his mother a Muggle. They were the definition of antithesis, both coming from completely different worlds - both geographically and culturally. And Callum was to be the synthesis of both. From birth, his parents did their best to expose him to all there was to offer on both sides of his lineage. His father introduced him to the magical world, amazing him with feats of wizardry, spoiling him with magical sweets and novelties, taking him on trips to Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade. Elisabeth introduced him to a different kind of magic, one that didn’t rely on spells or sorcery. He was enamored by the music of bands like The Beatles on their shortwave radio, enchanted by the movie musicals they saw at the cinema - Cal loved it all as much as Alastair’s wizarding feats. He was given equally a wizarding and Muggle education so that he would have a fair shot in either world. Both Alastair and Elisabeth, however, were overcome with pride and joy when little Cal began showing signs of magical talent.

Cal’s parents were different in another way, too.

Elisabeth was sick - And Alastair wasn’t.

Cal was nine years old when she first fell ill. They were on summer holiday at Fistrall Beach - one moment they were joking and having a good time, the next she was laying in the sand, unresponsive, while his father cried out for help. Cal would never forget the terribly desperate cries of his father. Nor would he forget the fear and helplessness he felt as he watched both of his father cradle his mother in his arms, while Cal felt hot tears rolling down his face.

The rest was a blur, Cal feeling as though they spent more time in hospitals than not. His mother, as Alastair explained to him, had an illness known as “cancer” in her head - something that neither Muggles nor magical-folk had a cure for; so they had to cherish all the time they had with her. This confused Cal - but mostly it just made him feel angry. Magic was supposed to be able to do anything, to heal anything, he thought. And adults were supposed to have answers for everything. Instead, he was left with a father who was just as inconsolable as him sometimes, a bedridden mum, and a slew of doctors and adults try to comfort him by telling him that things would be okay, though Cal could see through their lies, no matter how nice they sounded.

And when he received his acceptance letter any day now, he knew that he would spend his days at Hogwarts trying to find a cure for his mother. A cure that nobody else had been able to supply him with.

No matter what path it led him down.

Roleplay:
Reply as your character to the following:

Godric Park.

Overhead, the sky was a crisp blue, for once clear of the ever-pervasive spongy clouds and rain. The sun was a lemony-yellow presence, high in the Eastern sky, and in front of it zipped three broomsticks in a straight line, or something very like one. One... two..... three... the boys passed, their shouts of excitement echoing as they chased the snitch, a tiny shimmer reflecting the sunlight.

Far below was another, much smaller broomstick.

It trugged along the ground, hugging close to it like a sluggish choo choo train and occasionally shuttering in protest. This was because said stick was currently being occupied by a very small girl who was tugging upward on the front of it with all her might, trying to coax it into doing what it had been expressly designed NOT to do.

"John, I said wait up!" The tiny girl squealed, giving the broomstick another tug.

Begrudgingly, it drifted upward a foot, and then sank, depositing the troublesome girl safely on the ground. Janey Hurst was not pleased. In a huff, she hopped off the toy safety broom, grabbing it firmly and thrusting it handle first into the turf.

Her brother was such a beast. He NEVER let her play! She folded her arms, seething blue eyes fixing on another figure nearby.  "You!" She barked, much more sharply than she meant to.

"...Do you want to play?"

Roleplay Response:

Since his mother had taken ill, Cal had had a difficult time making friends or connecting with other people his age. While his father was shopping, he sat in the nearby park, watching as other children laughed, played, and flew around on brooms. He would have loved to join them, but something inside had rooted him to the ground, and despite his best efforts, he couldn’t bring himself to join in with the other children. Instead, he stayed cross-legged on the ground, watching as the boys chased a golden shimmer in the sky. Alastair, of course, had taught him about Quidditch and all the odd rules that went along with it, so Cal recognized the shimmer immediately as a Snitch. Where the boys had gotten it, and why it was the only ball in the sky, he couldn’t say.

There was another child too, one that didn’t quite reach the same heights as the other boys. Instead, she stayed low to the ground, accelerating at a pitiful speed. Cal recognized the frustration on her face, and his heart felt an odd bit of sympathy for her. Just like him, she wanted to play with the older kids, but due to circumstances outside of her control, she simply couldn’t. He frowned as she pulled up on the broom again, promptly falling off of it and onto the turf only inches below her. As her blue eyes locked onto his, Cal felt a jolt of anxiety and immediately looked down. He didn’t want to appear as though he was being rude by staring at her as she struggled to catch up with the older kids. But it was too late, as he heard her shout out, and Cal had no choice but to look up at her again with his apologetic eyes.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to stare. I wasn’t making fun or anything,” he began to stammer out before he was immediately cut off by her question. Play? That was far from what Cal was expecting. He looked at her thoughtfully, absentmindedly chewing the inside of his lip. He considered the prospect for a moment, his stomach turning with anxiety once again. But here was a perfect opportunity to be able to make some friends and try to be happy like he once was. “I- sure,” he said, giving the girl a small - albeit forced - smile. He couldn’t just magically make his feelings disappear, after all, wizard or not. “What would you like to play?”

Just like forces outside of their control prevented them from playing with others, they now gave them to the opportunity to play with each other.

Hi Callum, welcome to the site!

Your application looks great and has been accepted!

I just want to flag that if you choose to pursue a storyline in the future where Callum finds any sort of success in finding a cure for his mother's illness, you would likely need to submit a special request for this, as finding a cure for cancer could have the potential to drastically alter the site canon and other people's personal plots as well. Happy to discuss further if needed, feel free to PM me or DM me via Discord (Yas#4887).

Looking forward to seeing Callum in action!
