Biography: Lacey Barass is the cookie-cutter definition of girl-next-door. From her wide grey eyes to her genuine demeanor, Lacey is truly a great friend… If you take the chance to get to know her that is. She tends to keep to herself and can come across as standoffish, simply because she isn't one to jump into new friendships and she has never worried about what others think of her. Having a lot of friends isn’t a priority because she has such a lovely family. It is the first year Lacey will be attending Hogwarts, and although she received her letter when she was ten, ready to be a first year, she lived in France at the time and her parents didn’t want their only child to move away at such a young age because they loved her so intensely. Lacey loves her parents deeply, but wanted to get the formal wizard training and didn’t find it fair that her parents both got the opportunity to train in the magic world. Therefore, after begging for years, her mother Anne finally caved and agreed to find a way. Her father, Benjamin, applied and received a job working with the Department of magical Law Enforcement where he is able to work from Rothes only 20 minutes from Hogwarts. Anne and Benjamin feel much more comfortable with Lacey so close and she often sneaks home to do some laundry or have a nice meal on the weekends. She adores always having her family to lean on, but they tend to clobber her, which makes Lacey become incredibly claustrophobic. She’s laidback and carefree until her freedom is compromised.
She is her own person and doesn’t open up easily, but is always sure to smile and be kind to everyone. She is a curious and tends to act impulsively, unafraid of her image to others. She is relaxed and bold and can be somewhat of a troublemaker, but follows directions just fine. She’s always eager to make new memories and is sentimental and sweet to her peers, although she may not always agree with them. She hates fights and seemingly never loses her temper, although she has strong beliefs and opinions that she will proudly stand by on occasion when she is challenged. She doesn't easily make enemies and tends to get along with everyone without being particularly close to them. Although she tends to be fickle, when it comes to real issue she is extremely reliable and a natural-born leader, taking charge when it really calls for it. She is generally easy to get along with, and can’t be easily crossed, but prefers to be alone and is fearful coming into her first year of formal wizard training that she will fall behind. Her parents are very strict on her academics and she has never struggled in muggle school, but Hogwarts would be completely different. The people would be completely different. The year would be completely different.
Who knows what the year will bring?

A few Slytherin girls waved to Lacey as they passed, which she quickly responded with a smile and slight nod of her head, sending a strand of hair flying into her face. This was Lacey’s way of acknowledging their presence without forcing a social interaction. She flicked the disobedient curl away with her index finger and glanced down to smooth down her pleated skirt. She buttoned the top few buttons of her sweater in an attempt to look presentable and swallowed hard. She was asked to meet with the headmaster about late-night wandering, which she falsely claimed to be a sleep-walking disorder. Sure she had lied… to the most important teacher in school, but leaving campus really wasn’t against the rules if she didn’t get caught, right?
She never thought she’d be caught in a thousand years, but she was careless and didn’t take note of the mud that had soaked into the soles of her shoes. She fiddled with her tie a moment, before checking the soles of her shoes, which she had meticulously cleaned after being caught. Her parents would surely be called in to discuss “possible solutions for her condition.” They were always at school. It wasn’t even like they were asked to be, but at the first sign of trouble they paraded to Hogwarts in an attempt to cover up Lacey’s mess. Luckily, they tended to agree with Lacey. Afterall, she was the only child.
She could commit murder and they would still side with her, but this time it was different. She had lied. There was no chance of getting out of this one. Her parents would explain that she didn’t have a sleeping condition, and she would in fact be punished. In addition to this, her parents had raised her on the saying “honesty is the best policy”. They hated liars.
“Hey! Wait up! It’s for the paper.” A girl called from behind. Lacey was so busy, stressing to create ways she could cover up this mess that she barely noticed the girl sprinting towards her.
“Astrid.” She dumbly stated, recognizing the girl immediately. She glanced towards the Headmaster’s door a moment, before returning her gaze to the girl. “I’m in kind of a bind, so it has to be quick, but what can I do?” She offered a half smile and exhaled in short pants, forcing a single curl to fall straight down her forehead and nose.
“What do you think about serving frog legs at lunch? Some say it’s a delicacy, but others think it’s plain gross.” Astrid responded. Lacey bit a lip a twirled the stray hair out of her face, hastily forcing it behind her ear.
“I’ve gotten sick on them a few times, so they’ve slowly lost their appeal.” She spoke quickly, nervously glancing at the door. “I really must be going. I love your column!” She offered a genuine look of sympathy before scrunching up her nose and wrapping on the Headmaster’s door. She hated being rushed, but it was absolutely necessary. She turned back to Astrid one final time. “Let me know when the paper is to be published.”
