SHOPKEEPER PERMIT
You must have applied as an Elsewhere character before completing this permit.

Shop name: Chashitsu
Shop Type: Tea shop/book nook
Location: Hogsmeade

Short Description (50 words max):
A single-story Japanese tea house, bordered with natural wood grain, the floors a smooth pale green, the walls white. Inside teapots hover over tables that sit low to the floor, surrounded by cushions. Books line two of the walls, and are scattered on random tables.

Long Description (200 words min):
The outside is simple, a single-story traditional chashitsu, though considerably larger than those back home in Japan. The outer walls are a simple tan, interrupted by Japanese-style rectangular windows, sectioned with light wood into smaller rectangles. They are, of course, covered in paper instead of glass, which has been enchanted to not only resist rain, but to let a greater amount of sunlight in. The roof is slanted on its four sides, and made of large halves of bamboo. At the front edge of the roof, a long sign hangs to the right. Every few seconds it switches from Chashitsu, to the Japanese spelling of the word, and back again.

Inside, you enter to find a large, open room. In the back left corner there is a small counter, with small trays of various asian-style cakes. Behind this is usually where Hanako resides. There is a sliding door behind her that leads to the kitchen, and periodically you will see it open a few inches by itself, to let a pot in or out. The edges of the room are left with plenty of walking room, while the middle is a sea of dark blue cushions, all gathered around a group of low-sitting black tables. The flooring is a pale green, while the walls remain a pale white. Along the right and left walls are rows of bookshelves, as high as the ceiling and as full as possible with every sort of book, in no particular order.

The windows in the back and front let in a spectacular amount of sunlight, though there are lanterns that hang from the ceiling above the tables for night reading. The cups and pots she uses are of various coloring, all of them within a Japanese theme. Her favorite is a pale blue set decorated with white lilies. Each pot contains a different tea, varying from chai, jasmine, lavender, so on and so forth. She brews her teas from hand-picked herbs and spices, and all fresh ingredients. The pots hover overhead, waiting for anyone to call out their flavor, to which they respond by filling their teacup. Once and awhile they will whizz back to the kitchen, to either heat themselves or get refilled.

Patrons can read for free, though Hanako asks them to make at least a small donation, so she may continue buying more books to add to her collection. If someone wants to take a book home, the policy is the same. The tea is unlimited for two sickles, and the cakes are relatively cheap, though are priced individually.

What purpose will this shop serve other than selling things and being the home of your character? Why would people want to RP there just for fun?
Well, not only does Hanako brew fantastic tea and make scrumptious cakes, she hopes her shop can be a nice safe haven for anyone, a peaceful place for somewhat studious students, or students who just want a good read. Possibly even adults who would like a quiet afternoon pouring over a good book with unending tea and Hanako's quiet hospitality.

CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Hanako Sasaki
Gender: Female
Age: 21
Education:
Hanako attended Beauxbaton's as per her strict father's request. She upheld outstanding grades throughout her schooling career, though was not allowed to partake in anything her father deemed a waste of time, such as quidditch.

Residence:
Hanako lives in a small cottage just off the shores of Hokkaido in Japan, outside of the city Sapporo. She moved there after graduating, since before she was eleven it had been her home. With her attachment to Beauxbatons, and her younger brother now attending Hogwarts, she is tempted to move closer to Hogsmeade, where she has just set up her new shop. The talk of war between Japan and China soon also has her considering the move, though she knows she would miss her home.

Occupation
Hanako had been working odd jobs after graduation, carefully saving her galleons and sickles to afford her own shop. Her father tried bullying her into working for the ministry, but Hanako wanted nothing to do with it. Finally she afforded to open her brand new business, Chashitsu, in which floating teapots will fill your cup with whichever tea you call out. Along the walls are rows and rows of books, to either enjoy with your tea or to purchase. The tea is unlimited for two sickles, and the books are purchased by donation. Hanako spends most of her time brewing her delicious teas, and making her small cakes to sell along with the tea. The shop has a light Japanese theme to it.

Do you plan to have a connection to a particular existing place (for example: the Ministry, Shrieking Shack) or to take over an existing shop in need of new management?
Hogsmeade, and if I could be allowed to open a shop, I would be delighted.

Requested Magic Levels:
Adult characters have 32 starting levels to distribute across these four categories (less levels can be used if you so desire, but no more than 32). The number of levels on the lowest ability must be at least half of the highest ability.

If you want levels above the usual 32 total, or a significantly uneven distribution of starting levels, please fill out and submit the Special Request form here.

  • Charms: 10
  • Divination: 6
  • Transfiguration: 9
  • Summoning: 7
Do you wish to be approved as a group with any other characters? If so who and for what IC reason?
Nope, though I could put her brother as an available character when Hogwarts applications open.

Please list any other characters you already have at the site:
None.

Biography: (300 words minimum.)
Hanako was always told that she would be a great witch. Not because of some amazing ability on her part. No, her father was simply convinced that his first born daughter would be nothing less. He was pureblood, he had married her mother for being pureblood, not because he loved her. And now he expected far too much from Hanako.

Before she was eleven, her father made her attempt spells with her mind, since she could not get in trouble by the ministry. Often these attempts scared her, and she did not want to practice anymore. If she did not, though, her father would call her all manners of useless and lazy, and so she would run to her mother, who would comfort her, though not defend her against her father.

Once she started school, there was no end to her father's controlling attitude. He made sure she wasn't enrolled in any useless subjects, or taking part in any silly clubs. He wouldn't even allow Hanako to visit the local market near Beauxbatons, refusing to sign her permission slip. Often she was seen in the library, long black hair tied back in a ponytail as she poured over her studies. It was difficult for her to make friends, though eventually some of her quieter classmates found her to be lovely company. She would never complain about her father to any of them though, and when asked why she never did anything but study, she would fall silent, giving some noncommittal gesture, such as a shrug. There was also the fact that Hanako barely spoke anything but Japanese, though she could read and understand English. The language barrier tended to push everyone away.

By year five, Hanako was in the top ten of her class. She was able to relax more with friends, and study less. Of course she could still not participate in quidditch or any other club, but often she could take walks with friends, or hang out in the common room. A longing to have fun was growing deep within her, but she snuffed it out, fearing her father and his disappointment.

By this time boys began to take notice of Hanako. There didn't seem to be an overly large population of Japanese students at Beauxbatons, and her English was finally becoming understandable. She was thin and short, standing at about five foot two, with her straight black hair coming down to her midback. Her face was fair and pale, and while she wasn't going to be Miss Japan, she definitely wasn't an eyesore. Unfortunately for anyone who let her catch their eye, though, Hanako seemed to ignore any sort of an inclination to a crush on her. Once in the beginning of her sixth year, a fifth year tried to ask her out, only to have her walk past him as if he didn't exist. Hanako could only imagine her father cursing the poor soul who wanted to even hold her hand.

After graduation, Hanako thought her father may finally leave her alone. This was more opposite of the truth than she could hope. Each day her father asked her what position in the ministry of magic she was going to take, whether it was going to be under his office or not. She never had a good answer for him, because though she would never tell him, she hated the ministry. They encompassed everything her father was trying to force her to become. So she skirted his questions, taking up jobs here and there, trying to save up money for something, anything other than the ministry. She was eventually able to buy her own cottage, and though it was small, it helped get her away from her father.

One day, after a particularly hard day of eradicating Cornish pixies from a broom shop, Hanako laid on her bed and wished she had a nice, hot cup of tea. She began to think of all the hard work she did in school, and how nice it would have been to have some authentic tea from home every time she felt overworked or exhausted. The idea of her own shop started to blossom. A shop for students to come rest, possibly to learn, and to have fun with friends. Thus the idea of her tea shop was born, which she planned to name Chashitsu, after the word for a traditional tea hut in Japan.

After long months of hard work, her tea shop was finally purchased. She quickly decorated and set up her books, her kettles, her countertop for her cakes. Her first big accomplishment, which she wrote home about. A few days later came her parents' reply. Her mother wrote first, speaking of being elated and proud of her daughter. Her father wrote little, only calling her a fool for opening a tea shop. She felt no pang of pain from her father's disappointment; she had expected it, and she was going to use it to ensure her shop became exceedingly successful.

Roleplay:
You come across one of these posts on the site. Please select one & reply as your character:

Option One -
Amelia Nixon was many things, but she was never a pushover reporter that people could just usher away with a busy shuffle past. She was dedicated and eager to cut to the very middle of the current political tensions because she was Amelia Nixon and her articles would most certainly become front page material.

“Sir, please! It’s for the Prophet, how do you feel-“

Another one brushed passed her, the shuffling busy masses making their way through Diagon Alley for the lunchtime rush. This had been the best possible time to get people, but none of them were giving her anything to go with.

Only momentarily discouraged, the short red headed lady took a seat on a nearby bench. Her quill resting in her left hand and her notepad ready in the opposite hand. Amelia pouted, tapping the quill against her leg as she scanned the waves of people for somebody - anybody - who looked like they had something to say.

She had been dreaming of her name in bold print, Amelia Nixon: The Source of Today’s Tomorrow. She had been dreaming of the larger office and the secretaries that would fetch her the morning coffee and fetch her anything she needed. The VIP interviews and the most exclusive press passes. But all Amelia had was a page seventeen piece on the rising number of frogs in London.

Hardened by a day of no success, the reporter stood up and started to trod off down the alley. A loose stone on the cobble path caught her heel, sending the distraught girl toppling down to the ground.

“Merlin’s fog watch, my heel is broken! Help!” she yelled as she tried desperately to recover her shoe frantically in the middle of the Diagon Alley moving crowds.

Roleplay Response:
Hours had passed, though the short, youthful Asian witch hardly seemed to notice. She had accumulated a large stack of books to her left, and was currently flipping through another in her hands. Her wand was stuck in her bun, one of her favorite places to keep it. The shopkeeper came over to her for about the fourth time, and cleared her throat to garner Hanako's attention. "Miss" She uttered softly, sounding a bit impatient "this isn't a library, and I would like to close up so I may go eat my lunch, if you don't mind."

"Oh!" Came Hanako's startled reply "My apologies. Let me just purchase these and get out of your way." She nearly stumbled as she rose to her feet, plopping her current read on the top of her stack. Her bun wobbled as she bent to carry the stack of five books, sliding them onto the countertop while the shopkeeper waddled behind the cash till. The keen eye of the owner rallied up her total, and finally she uttered "That'll be 23 sickles, miss."

"23! Oh goodness, alright." Hanako's soft voice held no protest as she counted out the money for the old lady. She swiftly handed it over, making brief and mysterious eye contact with the woman, before taking hold of her books and leaving the shop altogether. Over her shoulder she spotted the sign at the door being flipped to CLOSED as she began her trek down Diagon Alley.

“Merlin’s fog watch, my heel is broken! Help!”

Hanako's head snapped to attention as she heard a female's voice rise over the shuffling and muttering of the crowd. She looked down as a clattering reached her ears, and lo and behold, a shoe had come to a stop just in front of her, the heel hanging sideways, holding on by a thin strip of fabric. She awkwardly kicked the shoe over to a nearby bench, setting her books down to pick it up. "Hey!" She called, her voice small, so her shout was more along the lines of a person's normal speach volume. "I have your shoe..." Her voice trailed as she inspected the broken element. Her fingers gently pulled her wand out of her hair, the shoe in her right hand. "Repairo" she murmured, flicking her wand at the heel. Instantly the footwear was back to normal.

Her arm rose up to wave the shoe in the air "Hey, someone lost a broken shoe! I fixed it for you." She stayed in that pose for a few seconds, before lowering her arm, looking around for the owner of the now-mended heel.
