Divination

Year (pick two): 3rd , 4th

Biography:
If you are applying to be a first, second, or third year, your biography must be at least one hundred words long.
If you are applying to be a fourth year or above, your biography must be at least three hundred words long.

Matt has a little brother who’s three years younger to him.
Their mother would come home drunk every night to their father. Mr. Lancaster worked at the ministry and took care of his boys while constantly putting up with his wife.
There would be times when Mr. Lancaster could be found crying silently on the landing. Matt hated his mother for doing this to Dad.
He barely remembered the time when she used to be Mum. Mum used to bake them cookies and kiss Dad every time they met. She loved her family. This wretched woman was not mum.

Matt hoped and hoped that his father would stay strong and maybe leave her, and soon his prayers were answered. Mr. Lancaster filed for a divorce about 5 years ago, and they moved out of the city, into the country side.

Matt and his brother, Dave were strictly forbidden to use any magic in the house, since their mother was muggle and she wasn’t comfortable with it. Since the divorce and the move, they were encouraged to explore their magical selves.

He has had magical moments only when he’s happy. The day Mr. Lancaster took the boys fishing, Matt was able to move the boat fast over the water while fishes jumped out to greet them.

Matt has learnt to stay quiet over the years of being shunned. He's never stood up for himself, but rather for others who seemed to be in the need of a friend.

He has an affinity with all creatures like cats, rabbits, moles, rats, bugs and of course dogs. He’s very shy at first, and seems to think that animals would understand him best. The thought of any human interaction is almost terrifying to him. Matt Lancaster is also a romantic being. He loves nature and enjoys the little things in life.

When it comes to a challenge, he can’t back down . His father has often challenged him to duels and quidditch games , resulting in a Matt with a terrible thirst to prove himself. He can get quite defensive sometimes, without reason, but knows how to accept and move on.

Matt’s absolute flaw is his sarcastic language. Though he’s quiet and keeps mostly to himself, he will not pass a chance for a poke at somebody . He has done this only to those he thinks are trouble makers. Bullies who pick on little kids , find themselves either shamefully embarrassed in a crowd or hanging by their legs in a tree.

Matt isn’t one to stand by and do nothing when it comes to a fight.
When it comes to celeberation, he’s likely to hide and long for encouragement from someone to join. He needs to be pushed to get things done and is quite the procrastinator.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: Any

Personality: Matt is a very awkward boy. He’s very opinionated, which is probably why he doesn’t fit in with the crowd, so he became soft spoken owing to no particular encouragement from his peers.
He's smart and open minded, not much of a charmer.

Appearance: Matt Lancaster is tall for his age and hits his head on doorways. He has dark brown hair that sits neatly on his head. He’s got an average build and an embarrassing tummy.
Brown eyes, slightly crooked teeth and a trace of a beard.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.

Matt's house had won the Quidditch Cup three years in a row now, but this time they weren't so lucky. The kid that had cost them the game was in his 2nd year. The great hall was filled with students groaning about the game. Matt just wanted to grab something to eat. He'd been on the poor kid's end of the stick far too many times to join in with the jeering.

As he sat himself down, he remembered that he had to write an essay for Potions. "Stupid Quidditch game" He muttered under his breath. He'd never be able to finish it in time. Since he absolutely had to get it done, Matt stuffed a pastry in his mouth and walked out of the hall, as fast as he could towards the dormitories.

'Alright.. first you've got to get some books to help you, better head to the library' ,he thought to himself. Suddenly he noticed a kid in front of him. It was James, the supposed failure to the team.

James rounded on the sound and began to shout, his brown eyes shining with tears. "WHAT! Haven't you ever seen a loser before? Why don't you just take a picture!"

Matt stood there, looking at him with the friendliest face he could make. He felt awkward trying to comfort him, for he knew how bad it was to be in  his place. If it was him , no amount of cuddling or words would help him.
So, knowing the right thing to do was to calm him down, he started.

"Um. James right? Listen.. firstly.. I was heading over to the library , to get myself some potions books.. I'm not after you."

He saw James' tear stained face and grew even more uncomfortable.

He took a deep breath, he wasn't used to any sort of speeching, except to Davie, his little brother.

"I'm sure no one in that hall blames you alright? Don't be so rough on yourself.. Go and grab a pastry. The orange ones are really good."

Matt stood there wishing he wasn't stuck in this position. He hoped that he had helped James in some way. All he needed was a pat on the back and something to eat. He blinked at James and gave him a smile.

Hello Matt! Your application is off to a great start, there are just a few things that need to be worked on before we move forward :)

First off, we ask that you answer as many of the question as you can on the template. Birthdate is missing. It helps to assure to us that you know what time frame we are working in and that you've given some thought to important dates in your character's life. Depending on the writer, a winter/spring/summer/fall child affects their characters way of thinking a bit. Sometimes it doesn't of course ;) but yeah, if you could just give us an idea of Matt's Birth month/day, we'd appreciate it.

Ooh, and don't forget to fill in the biography section!

Finally, I love your Sample RP, but it might fit better if worked into a Biography of sorts, as we add two options for you to respond to within the application template. Responding to someone else's writing can sometimes be a touch different than responding to your own NPC characters, so we ask that you show us how your character might react to a completely uncontrollable second-person situation.

If you just make the changes and then respond back to this thread, we will take another look at the application! Thanks.

Wonderful, thanks for the alterations! I would just like to bring up a small thing in your sample roleplay response. It was lovely, I would just like to see something more to suggest an expected response. It feels a touch 'final', like the lone ranger trotting out of town toward the setting sun :) You can easily make it more 'inviting' to respond back to you by asking James a question or even having Matt wonder unto himself if James would crack a smile after his advice.

Ooh, and Matt 'patting James on the shoulder' could lean toward slight power playing. It might seem a small thing but it is harder for realistic reactions to occur... Say James is still real upset and he doesn't want to be coddled, he could easily notice your hand near him and move away, but in a role playing environment we do not have the same instant reaction ability. So unless you have an understanding with a certain writer and their character, it is best to phrase such actions like "Matt motioned to pat James on the shoulder, hoping it would make him feel better".

Or something of the like.

Anyway, the app is coming along wonderfully, just give some thought to the little RP sample alterations, make the changes and we'll move forward!
