Biography:
Frederick Heiss was dead.  Heike had loved him even if not a single one of his business ventures had amounted to anything.  She had fallen in love with him when they had started dating during her fourth year.  Three months after graduation she had given birth to their son.  That had been bad enough.  But then she had done the unspeakable.  Going against her grandfather's wishes, she married him. She would eventually be blotted from the family tree.  It was one thing for a male heir to marry down.  Such a thing was frowned upon but tolerated.  The same courtesy was not extended to those of the fairer, weaker gender.

The Heiss family was of pureblood lineage.  There was even a time when it had been considered on the same level as the Rothsteins. But it had become polluted by marriages with half-bloods over the past half-century.   For its part Frederick's branch of the line had remained pure.  But his family was poor by the standards of the society that she lived in.  They were even poor by the standards of wizarding society in general. These two variables together made him an unsuitable match for a granddaughter of Einhard Rothstein.

Both her sisters and her mother had immediately informed her that she was not to contact them or come visit.  Heike had endured six months of exclusion from her family save for the occassional visit from her cousin Alexander (Einhard's favorite grandchild – because he was the only male heir).  On a day in early March, Alex had stopped by to inform her that grandfather had finally relented after countless pleas by her mother and grandmother.  She would be allowed to attend some family gatherings.  She would be invited when she was wanted.  She was not to come otherwise.

And so life continued in this fashion for the next three and half years.  Then in the summer of 1969, her dear cousin had cut all ties with grandfather.  Unable to reach Alexander in England, Einhard had lashed out against Heike, cutting her off from the family completely, in an attempt to get his revenge on his grandson.

Where she had once appreciated the attention Alexander had paid her family during her state of semi-abandonment, she now resented him with a deep passion.  How could he, who had the doting attention of their grandfather, throw it all away?  And for what?  Some high minded belief of good magic.  If she had ever needed proof that mixed blood marriages were bad, she need look no further than her idiot cousin.  He had had everything.  And then he had just thrown it away.  Worse her grandfather had abandoned her because of Alexander Kolmer.  So she did the only thing she could do.  She made it clear to Alexander that he was not to come around her family anymore.

The next six years passed.  Frederick had a litany of almost successes that all turned to eventual failures.  They were barely breathing above the ocean of debt, the result of Frederick's near constant stream of failed business ventures.  Only the occasional loan from her mother or sisters kept the creditors at bay.  Heike had even taken to clerking in a lawyer's office on weekends and evenings to help control the bleeding.

Then as if by magic Frederick finally struck gold.  He had found a business partner to sponsor his latest invention, a self-spelling cookbook.    It seemed almost too good to be true.  It was.

Within weeks of his new partnership, Frederick found himself taking on the role of messenger for his new partner.  It soon became clear that he had gotten in over his head.  His new partner was involved in things that were far from legal.  The men he was forced to associate with were not the ones to suffer a slight and then let bygones be bygones.

Then on 25 April 1938 Heike got the news.

Frederick had been found bludgeoned to death in the alley behind a muggle bar in Munich.

(Why?  Why do I have to go live with him?) Edward Heiss demanded of his mother three days after his father had been laid to rest.

(Your father left us with so much debt.  His new business partners are not good men.  I need to be sure you will be safe.  He can do that.)  She didn't tell her son everything she suspected.  Her husband had not been murdered by muggle burglars like it had appeared.  She didn't know exactly who had killed him.  But she was sure that someone had.  Whether it was an associate of his business partner or one of the many creditors that he owed money to was something she planned to find out.

(But you don't even like him.)

(I admit that I resented him for what your grandfather did.  But he is a good man.  And he has agreed to take you in, to get you registered at the school he used to teach at.  And to help you learn the language.)

(But Mamma.)

(Shh now.)  She enclosed him in arms, squeezing him tight to her breast.

(This is stupid.  Why can't I stay with you?)  He said pulling back from his mother.

(Sit.)  She motioned to the nearby sofa.  When he stubbornly relented, she took the seat beside him.

(I love your father.  He was a good father.  But he wasn't a very good wizard and he was an even worse business man.  This by itself might not have been a bad thing.  But he also possessed a deep need to prove himself worthy of me.  And so I stood by him as he made poor choices because he needed me to.  But now he has put you at risk.  You will stay with your cousin because he can keep you safe.)

It was pointless to protest.  Edward knew that his mother's word was final.  His father had been the fun parent.  The parent that found it impossible to admonish or punish their child.  His mother did not suffer from( those shortcomings.  Yet he still found himself wanting to protest.  She needed him now that his father was gone.  No, he knew that wasn't true.  His father would have been completely lost without her.  But she could take care of herself.  No, he needed his mother.  He had just lost his father.  Now it seemed he would be losing his mother for some undetermined amount of time.  It was just all too much to bear.

Unbidden tears began to flow freely down the sides of his cheeks.  He burred himself in his mother's arms.  He didn't want to cry.  He was getting too old to cry – he was eleven after all.  Yet he was unable to hold the tears back.

“Hello guut morning.”

“You are getting much better.”  Alex smiled at his young cousin.  “But gooD not gut.”

(I still don't see why I need to go to this summer camp.  Mamma said you were supposed to keep an eye on me.)
“Edward, didn't we agree that we were going to try to speak only English during the day?  Now try that again, please.”

You agreed to that.  I didn't seem to have any choice in the matter.  The boy reflected inwardly.  He had been living with cousin Alexander for the past month.  The man hadn't turned out to be as bad as he had expected him to be.  But Edward still found himself resenting him.  Being with Alex meant that he wasn't with his mother.  And then there was the language thing.  Alexander could speak German as well he could but he insisted on speaking English except in the evenings.  He would force Edward to figure out what he meant when it would have been so much easier to just tell him what he meant.  Last of all there was the summer camp.  The last thing Edward wanted was to be thrown in amongst a bunch of British kids whose language he could barely speak.

“Why go I to supper camp?”

Alex found himself smiling despite the effort he made to hold it back.  Memories of his eight year old self sitting outside the cabin he had shared with his father came back to him.  He couldn't tell you now why his father had thought it important for him to learn English.  Heck he couldn't even tell you how or why his father had learned the language.

“Summer not supper.  And you need to reverse the verb and the noun.  Why do I need to go to summer camp?  As for why.  You are in a new country with a new language and new customs.  Camp is a good place to go to learn.  I went to it myself as a student.  It was there that I met my most dear friend.  Who knows, you might find your new best friend there.  And you'll be safe there.  I'll visit often.”

Blah.BlahBlah.  Edward understood most of what Alex had just told him.  But understanding did not mean he agreed with it.  And he knew for certain that he wasn't going to make any friends.  What was the point?  He was only going to be here temporarily.  Before long his mother would return for him.  He was sure of it.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: I prefer to let the hat decide.

Personality: Edward is currently a bit reserved. Though he can be quite friendly with those he gets used to.  Given his family history, he is quick to dismiss and judge.  If they don't want me then fine would be a good way of explaining his feelings towards his extended family and anyone that appears to offend him.  He does have the same ambition to be successful as his father did.  In fact, given his father's failures he might be even more ambitious.  He is loyal to those who are close to him.  He will defend them passionately without concern for self.  Like his mother, he is bigotted towards non pure bloods.

Appearance: Edward has h,is father's straight brown hair cut short and neat.  He has his mothers thin but not too thin face and her deep ocean blue eyes.  He is of average height but a bit thin for his average build.

Edward was lost.  This stupid, old Scottish castle did not make sense.  He had lived around magic his entire life.  So it wasn't the magical aspects of the castle that did not make sense to him.  Magic made perfect sense to him.  But the corridors of the castle seemed to lead to different places depending on the time of day or the way the wind was blowing or the sun was shining.  It made getting around very difficult.

He was looking for the library but had somehow stumbled upon the astronomy tower.  Yet he had started his journey outside the great hall and could not remember going up any stairs.  So how he had managed to make it to one of the highest points in the castle was beyond his comprehension.

Hey!

He turned around to see a tall blonde coming towards him.  He stepped into a side corridor that lead off from the main thoroughfare.  Pushing himself against the wall, he waited.  He didn't think the girl, who was definitely much older than him, had been speaking to him.  Heck if she was like most of the older students he had encountered in the halls so far then she probably hadn't even noticed him.  Still, she was bigger than him and he thought he had detected a wild look in her eyes.  Better to be safe.

It’s for the paper!

She really had been talking to him.  Moreover it seemed she wanted to interview him.  Why she wanted to interview him was anyone's guess.

“Me..m..me?” He stuttered, backing his way down the hall away from her.  Up close she looked even more intimidating.  And yes that was definitely a wild look in her eyes.

“Frösche? Was meinst du?”  Unconsciously, he had slipped into his native language.  Lessons with Alex had never involved speaking when he was scared for his life.  Was she going to make him eat frog legs?   Disgusting  And why wasn't there anyone else around?  And who built a side corridor that went ten feet then just ended.  Stupid Scottish castle.....

He understood far more English than he could speak, currently about 9 out of every ten words made sense to him.  But now he had seemingly regressed.  He had understood frogs and eat.  The rest may as well have been in French for all the good it was doing him.
