Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Lilliana Evelyn Jaymes

Birthday: 6 October 1948

Hometown: Coventry, England

Bloodline: Muggleborn

Magical Strength (pick one): Transfiguration

Magical Weakness (pick one): Conjuring/Summoning

Year (pick two): First year (preference), Second year

Biography: Was it really 4:30 in the morning already? Blue eyes trained on the ceiling, Lilli sighed. It was time to get up and do chores. Two of her sisters, who shared the shabby mattress on the floor with her, were also waking up. But Lilliana had been up all night. She hadn’t slept a wink. She felt something peculiar was happening. It was like her body was tingling with energy and she had a sense that something big was going to happen very soon. But for now, it was time to start the morning. It wasn’t even light out yet but that’s how things worked on a farm. And why her parents had had loads of children. She had a grand total of twelve siblings. Some were already adults and moved out. Lilliana was the eighth in line. She had already turned eleven. Her youngest sibling was a baby brother named Elias. He was only a few months old.

This was why the older kids had to pick up the slack around the house. The girls milked the cow and mainly stayed inside the house. The boys worked the land and with the other animals, helping their dad. Her muggle parents had an extremely traditionalist sort of view on things. But this day would not be like other boring days. Lilliana was forced to quit school a year ago to help her pregnant mother. Her parents figured she was at the best age to take a year or two off to help because she could just make it up later. The older kids were trying to prepare for careers and the younger ones apparently didn’t know enough to be in a position to quit school... and what would they really be able to do for their mother anyways?

As Lilli went to get dressed, she heard a smart knock on their front door, which was directly below her room. Who was calling at this early hour? She poked her head out of the window and called to the oddly dressed stranger standing on their front walkway.

“Who are you?” The doe-eyed child asked, sort of rudely (because she was put off about the way this person was dressed).

The stranger looked up and smiled. “Ah, yes, you must be who I’m looking for. Lilliana Jaymes, am I right?” They said.

Looking down at this person incredulously, her mouth went agape as she nodded slowly, tousled blonde hair hanging in funny directions. What was going on? Her father reached the door before Lilliana could get down there and greet this mysterious person. Someone who already knew her name too!

Her parents were now talking to the stranger, who had seemed to settle into their shabby sitting room quite comfortably. Her parents shooed her off for now, closing the door into the sitting room. But she eavesdropped. She heard things like “Hogwarts”, “magic”, and “school”. After a light chuckle, their visitor waved a short wand and the door swung open with Lilli standing there, having been listening through the keyhole.

“Have you heard everything, little one?” They asked with amusement. Lil nodded a little but then shook her head. She’d been caught, sure, but she didn’t know what this all meant.

“Well, you’ve probably noticed strange things seem to happen around you, yes?” Quietly, she nodded. “Well then, you’ve been accepted as a student at a magical school. You’ll get to learn magic!” The stranger exclaimed, as if that explained everything. She looked confused as did her parents.

“We can’t pay...” Her father started. The stranger smiled kindly.

“All of that has already been taken care of. She can go for free. We have a source of funds to get her everything she’ll need to go to Hogwarts. You’d be out nothing and no undue hardship would be placed upon you.” The stranger explained in a soothing voice.

Magic? School? Magic school?! She suddenly smiled quite brightly and looked at her parents for the affirmation she desired. Her father nodded and smiled, her mother looked a little sad but nodded as well. Lilliana thought she would scream with excitement. But she didn’t want to wake Elias up or her mother might rescind the offer.

After a lengthy conversation, the details were all worked out. The young student was anxious to leave home, and for so long, as it was all she’d really ever known. But she was going to a magical school called Hogwarts and she was going to learn magic!

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

House Request: Wherever she is best suited.

Personality: Lilliana is a quiet, shy individual. She is accustomed to taking orders from adults, almost to the point of sometimes putting herself in danger. She is compliant yet sometimes forgetful. When it comes to a challenge, she will face it head on, trying to win favor among the people in her life, including her parents and teachers. She’s not much into reading books but this newfound world of magic may prompt her to keep up with her studies and homework because she wants to succeed. She may not be the best, but she will be her best.

Appearance: This short little gal has dirty, straight blonde hair and shimmering blue eyes. She is a little on the skinny side. She likes to wear her long hair up most of the time. This is something she got used to doing when doing housework and cooking; she didn’t want her hair in her face let alone the food. She can be a little mousey at times, as she doesn’t bathe regularly... her parents only let the kids have a bath once a week or so, and as such, she gets a little on the smelly side of things but her hygiene ought to improve while she is at Hogwarts (due to the abundant availability of water and hygiene items).

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

Lilliana was also new to Hogwarts. She wasn’t brave by any means but she tried. She was a quiet, mousey little thing and her stature didn’t exactly make her look brave either. Tiny, slender little Lil was in search of the kitchens but she’d made a wrong turn somewhere. She found herself in the dungeons. It was dark, damp and reminded her a little of being near a swamp.

Suddenly, she heard a girl call out. For Emma Birch. Lil didn’t know of any Emma Birch. She was startled, to say the least, from the shouting which seemed just a corridor away. Slowly, she followed where the shouting seemed to have come from.

“I... I’m not Emma.” She said, her tiny voice traveling towards the other girl. She turned a corner and saw the source of the shouting. Another girl, probably about her age, was standing, seemingly frozen in fear.

“I’m Lil... Lilliana Jaymes. I’m just trying to find the kitchens.” She said, approaching the other young girl slowly. What if she tried to attack her? Maybe she should keep her distance. She didn’t know a lot of magic yet but her hand instinctively went towards her wand. What could she do though? She’d barely mastered the levitation spell! Then again... she could use that on this other girl if things went wrong. She’d probably be able to keep the other girl suspended in air, just long enough to duck under her body and make haste towards her own common room.

But, hopefully, it wouldn’t come to that!

Hi Lilliana, welcome back!

Apologies for the delay with your application, there was an element in your biography that the admin team needed to query and discuss before we could get you accepted. You write in your biography that Lilliana was forced to quit school to help around the house when she was younger -- whilst it's fine for this to be the case and you don't need to rewrite this, it's worth being aware that in 1944, the school leaving age in the UK was raised to 15. This means that Lilliana's parents would not legally have been allowed to prevent her from receiving an education. However, you can get around this by claiming that Lilliana's parents homeschooled her (or, at least, pretended to homeschool her, but really kept her at home to help out around the house). If you have any questions or concerns about this or you feel it no longer fits with your character's background, feel free to PM me and we can 'unaccept' the original application to allow you to make edits. In the meantime, I've gone ahead and accepted your application. Thanks for your patience and understanding!

do you remember the twenty-first night of september?
love was changing the minds of pretenders while chasing the clouds away
our hearts were ringing in the key that our souls were singing
as we danced in the night, remember how the stars stole the night away
