→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: Slytherin

Personality: Vera Via is a very closed off and introverted student due to how she was raised. A good day to her is one full of rain and amber lighting, with quiet classes and pages full of notes. She loves to watch people and observe their conversations, the ups and downs. She likes baking sweets. She hates hot days and rowdy halls, when she can't focus on her academics. She hates being bothered and people underestimating her. She loves proving them wrong. She's scared of dying, though she's come to terms with the fact that she will eventually. She's scared of being forgotten and left behind. She's scared of loving somebody to the point where she can't detach from them on a whim. She loves the ocean and every creature within it.

Appearance: Vera has light brown, almost dirty blonde hair that she dyes ash brown, because she doesn't want to look too much like her mother. Her eyes are a blue-green like her father's. Her hair falls to her mid-back, in an in-between of wavy and curly. Her hair is extremely layered, and has curtain bangs. She's 5'4", with a little bit of a stomach, making her insecure and confident all at the same time. Because she's typically insecure with her looks she tries to make up for it with academics.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.
You come across one of these posts on the site. Please select one & reply as your character. Remember, you can only roleplay your own character's actions, not Evangeline's or Hugh's.

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

Option 2:

That rat of his was in for it now.

The gray little rascal had disappeared from his clutches at breakfast. Again.

Before Hugh even knew what was happening, Merlin had shot across the floor, somehow managing to avoid all the feet walking across the hall and had escaped through the open doors.

Which meant that Hugh was now stomping through rows of flowers and other various flora, searching for the small creature. It was like the rat knew Hugh was allergic to most flowers. Merlin always chose to run to the gardens whenever he got away from Hugh. It was as if the rat did not want to have him for an owner.

Hugh had named his pet Merlin because he had hoped the powerful name would give the rat more incentive to be more than a rat. Not that he expected Merlin to change into a wizard or anything, but rats were just so...useless, for the most part. With a name like Merlin, Hugh thought it might give the rat purpose.

The only purpose Merlin seemed to have was getting away from Hugh as often as possible.

As the fifth year trudged into the second row of flowers, not taking much care to avoid trampling the first row, he felt the first sneeze building up pressure in his nose and behind his eyes.

"You blasted rat! Where are you?"

He pulled apart a section of bright red flowers; he didn't know what they were called because he despised flowers, and ducked his head low to peer into the depths of the flowerbed. It was moving closer in proximity to the flowers that finally did it. Hugh took in three great breaths and then let out an almighty sneeze. It was strong enough to disturb some of the dirt on the ground before him.

Groaning, he stood up again and wiped his nose on his sleeve. It was as he was turning his head, his nose running up and down his arm, that movement in his peripheral vision caught his attention. Normally one who preferred to put his best face forward, Hugh was a bit embarrassed to be caught wiping his runny nose on his robes.

Nevertheless, Hugh put on his best haughty voice. albeit a bit thickly with his plugged nose and said, "Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

Roleplay Response:

The ashen haired girl stared down at the boy from atop the stairs. His erratic movement gave her a cause for concern. She didn't want to intrude on his parade, not until she was sure he wasn't crazy. She heard him sniffle and ask, "Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."
Vera did her best to be polite with her response, since the boy was obviously drawing attention to himself with his actions. "I'm sorry for staring, but you're tearing up a garden. A garden in which I wouldn't be surprised if somebody put quite a bit of work into, and for what purpose?"
She felt her eyebrows furrowing in frustration, sensing herself becoming defensive. She quietly looked to her right and down at the stone bricks next to her foot. "'M sorry if that was rude." She tentatively looked back down at the boy, making brief eye contact as she looked back down at the mess he made.
"I'm Vera Via," she took a few steps down the stairs and hesitantly offered her hand out for the boy to shake. She looked down at his dirty hands, still offering hers, wanting to be polite. "And you are?"

When responding to the RP sample, please do not powerplay the other character in any way. This includes assuming a significant prior relationship between your character and the RP sample character, assuming any information about them that isn't explicitly detailed in the sample above, or powerplaying Hugh's pet rat. If in doubt about whether something constitutes powerplay, err on the side of caution and write something else!

Please also treat this sample as you would treat a real thread and leave your response open-ended to ensure the other character has a chance to respond. This means that your character should not walk away from or otherwise end the interaction in your response.

Sylvia Kate Whitwell

Biography: (300 words minimum.)
Malachite Amberghast is the youngest son of the Amberghast brood, though has always been a bit different from his siblings in a very ethereal way. As a child, he too often had his "head in the clouds," though it might be more accurate to say he had his head far above the clouds, in the celestial and scientific manner of speaking. A curious child, he attended school and became the second Ravenclaw in hundreds of years, following in his older brother, Indigo's, footsteps, much to their father's dismay. Mal, however, frequently took the admonishment without batting an eye; this is not to suggest he is emotionally vacant or insensitive, but rather that the familial environment has steeled him against criticism.

He was, at one point, considered the "spare" heir, following Indigo in line, though perhaps it was his brother's influence which caused him to veer off course of the Amberghasts' intentions for him and the family. While still very much involved with his family, Mal does seem to hold the burden of "peacemaker" between his father and older siblings, while maintaining a peaceful sort of relationship with his younger sister.

At Hogwarts, he was a quiet, though studious Ravenclaw; frequently called "Alien Eyes" while attending school, in his early years, Malachite often shared ideas and thoughts that were considered outlandish and strange, even by magical standards. These wild interests carried him through school and into adulthood, where, for a time, he managed a variety of business trades and a constant search for oddities. But as with most of the Amberghasts, a sense of duty won out and he begrudgingly joined the ranks of the Ministry of Magic, specifically with an interest in the Department of Mysteries where he pursues work as an Unspeakable -- truly a perfect fit for the boy who, for so long, didn't quite fit in with his peers.

Roleplay:
You come across one of these posts on the site. Please select one & reply as your character:

Option One -
Amelia Nixon was many things, but she was never a pushover reporter that people could just usher away with a busy shuffle past. She was dedicated and eager to cut to the very middle of the current political tensions because she was Amelia Nixon and her articles would most certainly become front page material.

“Sir, please! It’s for the Prophet, how do you feel-“

Another one brushed passed her, the shuffling busy masses making their way through Diagon Alley for the lunchtime rush. This had been the best possible time to get people, but none of them were giving her anything to go with.

Only momentarily discouraged, the short red headed lady took a seat on a nearby bench. Her quill resting in her left hand and her notepad ready in the opposite hand. Amelia pouted, tapping the quill against her leg as she scanned the waves of people for somebody - anybody - who looked like they had something to say.

She had been dreaming of her name in bold print, Amelia Nixon: The Source of Today’s Tomorrow. She had been dreaming of the larger office and the secretaries that would fetch her the morning coffee and fetch her anything she needed. The VIP interviews and the most exclusive press passes. But all Amelia had was a page seventeen piece on the rising number of frogs in London.

Hardened by a day of no success, the reporter stood up and started to trod off down the alley. A loose stone on the cobble path caught her heel, sending the distraught girl toppling down to the ground.

“Merlin’s fog watch, my heel is broken! Help!” she yelled as she tried desperately to recover her shoe frantically in the middle of the Diagon Alley moving crowds.

Roleplay Response:
Malachite Amberghast lacked in at least one way compared to his siblings; where the rest of the ghastly brood could be out and social in the world without complaint or social awkwardness, Mal suffered immensely under the pressures of society. Currently, that pressure was the bustling street of Diagon Alley– during the lunchtime rush. He hadn’t even had any business of his own being here, really; not at this hour, when usually he haunted the doorsteps of Knockturn Alley, instead, and much later in the day.

But there had been something– Indy had beckoned his brother’s company for one thing or another, and dutiful to a flaw, of course Mal had answered to the call. That was, notably, the second way in which he was different even for a family already so very different indeed. What happened next was just another odd and surprising way in which the middle sibling responded. Where his brother or sisters might have walked right by, Mal felt obligated to stop and help.

He first stooped down in a swift motion – grace was, graciously, an adopted trait from the entire lot of Amberghasts – and grabbed for the stuck shoe, long blond hair cascading into his eyes before his hand swiped the errant strands away. When he looked up to offer the shoe back to the woman, his eyebrows lifted. “I know you,” he said plainly; perhaps if she hadn’t been in the media, it would have been off-putting for a stranger to say as much (though, given whatever lower rung she clung to, it was possible, too, that his sudden statement was off-putting anyway). “You wrote the article about the rising number of frogs in London– do you really think it’s environmental, like the Muggles claim? Personally, I think it’s something more extra-terrestial than that.”

His mind was clearly already ticking; a former Ravenclaw, like his older brother, Malachite made his entire life out of being over-analytical. It was in his bones to consider not only the magical and the mundane, but the beyond, too. And so, an odd spark lit his green eyes, though his expression remained otherwise stoic. He was a strange thing to behold, in the height of his interest peaked, but ever hungry to know more.
