Biography:
As a fan of storybook intros growing up, Elise has opted to adopt a more narrative voice: “Our story begins with a young couple at sea allowing themselves to drift on a calm night in the Mediterranean. The day had been a marred by the violent swellings of a brutal storm but as the sun set, so too did the storm. What had been a fierce testament to survival had been enough to drive the two closer and, on that night, it was said the most wonderful girl was conceived.

A mere nine months later and a daughter was born unto them, Elise, named after her grandmother. The couple married shortly after, and Laurent had become the official family name. Life took a slower pace than the new mother and father had been used to. The memories of their world adventures felt like a distant memory but despite the nostalgia, there was a happiness in raising a daughter. However, all stories have their tragedies.

Elise’s father, still young enough, joined the French Navy still yearning for that touch of adventure. “It was only for a few years.” He promised, citing that he just wanted to make enough money to provide for his family. His father and his father before him had a history of sailing and the feeling for the sea was strong. Yet that tragedy would strike in the form of an accidental cabin fire, claiming only his life.

Although giving honors, life took a dramatic turn for the worse for Elise and her mother. Life on the coast was difficult for her mother, who was nary a sailor nor anything else. She did what she had to and was attracted by the promise of work in London by a family friend. Elise, apparently magically inert up to this point, had finally started showing signs of something extraordinary following her father’s death. Her mother was baffled, not quite understanding what was happening to her daughter. Could her father have known? It was, perhaps, coincidence or even destiny, that the letter to Hogwarts soon arrived in the mail. Destiny had arrived, or so Elise likes to claim.

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

Ghosts, trolls, and boggarts. She, too, had been tricked the same into the stories of something so threatening laying in the dungeons. It had been a troll for her to go see but now with another girl, it was some ghost. The nerve of some of those other girls who just wanted to play tricks like that on the unsuspecting. It really bothered her, knowing that someone else was also having to endure that feeling that something was creeping up behind you, ready to maul you or something horrific.

That is why as soon as the news reached her ears, Elise stormed off to the dungeons after the poor girl that had been tricked. She even went out of her way to give a rough passing bump on the shoulder as she passed one of the girls who were in on it. There would be another time to fully give them an earful or perhaps, get a bit of revenge if they truly deserved it. For now, there was a girl that needed rescuing!

Elise could have sworn she made it to the dungeons in record time, arriving just in time to hear the echoing holler from within. She froze, glancing down the dungeon with that same feeling of fear but she reminded herself that nothing was there. She hurried in after the girl. “Hey. Hey!” Elise called out as she caught up with the other one. She quickly tried to slip an arm around the other and walk with her. “Don’t worry, if there is a ghost I’m sure we can handle it!”
