Sam Willow grew up in New York, her father went missing when she was two years old. Her father, Devon Willow, never told Sam’s mother, Tiffany Greybird, he was a wizard and she didn’t find out until after he went missing and she found his wand and papers signed by the minister of magic. Sam’s mother predicted that the death of her husband was related to his ties in the magic world and she never told Sam and her little sister Nina. She took them from their home in London and moved them to New York in America. But when Sam got her letter from Salem Institute, Tiffany was out of work and couldn’t pay the bills, so she told Sam about her wizardry and let her accept the scholarship. They sent a letter back saying that there was no way for Sam to get to Massachusetts and they sent a wizard to apparate with her to Salem where Sam would be staying at the nearest hotel. Sam discovered her father was one of the most recognized aurors in history and he died fighting dark forces. The ministry paid for her books, robes and her wand as a last debt to her father. They even offered to buy her an owl and she said she would prefer a black cat and so it was that she got her cat and named it Opal like her birthstone. Her wand was 13 inches, willow with phoenix tail feather core that she got at a very old shop. Soon, it all came together when she learned about Metamorphmagus. Her eyes changed color everyday, every second even as she stared into the mirror. Her mother told her some people’s eyes just did that, but when her eyes turned purple or pink, she knew she wasn’t like “some people”. Soon she could do much more then changing her appearance.

What were partner projects about anyway?

Simon wasn't a loner, but he loathed any type of assignment that required him to team up with anyone. In his book, the only truly trustworthy student was himself. So naturally, when he'd been instructed to team of with a classmate and turn in a research report on the Muggle-American Civil War, Simon had been rather disappointed.

The library that afternoon was deserted aside from Simon and his partner. Before them lay a plethora of textbooks. Wars: Old and New by Kevin Torvalt. When You Say Civil... by Emma Jean. Each book was old and worn even more than the last. In a way, it was almost impressive that the books had lasted this long and still been put to such good use. Simon figured that there weren't many things for which that could be said.

Simon leafed through a copy of Understanding America by Harvey Wires, sighing heavily as each page flipped over on top of itself. He wondered what the student next to him was thinking. He was thinking that this was a drag. These books were probably boring beyond belief, despite their interesting appearance. The library was stuffy from the heat outside. Finally growing too bored from the text, Simon slammed the book shut and sat upright.

"How about I write the essay and stuff? You can just put your name on it. Sound good?"

Sam’s eyes turned a deep hue of blue meaning she was curious. She tried to understand how this boy could turn down an opportunity to make the work load lighter on himself. What would father do? She though. She turned her gaze on the old books and then back on the boy. “No, what good will that do for either of us?” She remembered how much divination homework she already had and almost changed her mind but she then refused to give in to temptation and picked up a dusty book titled “America’s War Against Itself" by Alice Warsap.
