Biography:
Carwyn was a product of power. Zir mother, Lamia Cadwallader, was one of the most ruthless harpists the world had ever seen, and she used her skill in Sonomancy to bring audiences to their knees--often quite literally--the world over. She had found a match in the wealthy Leland Sunleaf, the benefactor of the orchestra Lamia had earned her way into as a principal performer. He admired how driven and unrelenting she was, and she recognized his lofty position in the Magical Arts scene and all its potential as a pathway to greater esteem the world over. They pushed each other to new heights and greater acclaim, which for the two of them was the highest form of love. They married while on a world tour with the Enchanting Symphony Orchestra--a name Lamia had always abhorred--and soon after produced their first and only child.

Born in New York City, Carwyn found zirself with many homes over the course of zir life, some temporary, some to return to over and over. Ze enjoyed, above all, zir family estates in Wales and upstate New York. Both of them were situated in great wildernesses that brought Carwyn an infinite amount of peace. Each land had its own personality and value, and ze learned from it all, having made a hobby of cultivating and caring for it at every opportunity. With zir mother's tour schedule and father's active patronage of the arts both Magical and Muggle, Carwyn found zirself traveling regularly. Zir Russian governess-a young, an eager and highly educated witch excited for the prospect of world travel and continued safety from her family's troubles at home--was like an extension of the family until she became a part of it.

Yana--Ulyana Vassilieva--had accepted responsibility for Carwyn when ze was eight years old and taught zir nearly everything ze knew about magic. Zir mother had tutored both of them in dueling and strategy in her free time, and taught Carwyn the intricacies of Sonomancy, though neither of these subjects were among those in which ze excelled. Zir father taught zir the power of speech, and though ze wasn't as quick with a word as zir parents, they flowed from zir gracefully more often than not once they made it past zir lips. Despite the reputation zir mother had for being completely and utterly vicious, Carwyn only experienced love, support, and maybe a little bit of what others might consider pressure under her care. She wanted only for her only child to make zir own name, and scolded anyone who tried to make it for zir, including zir own father if need be. Yana, too, recognized Carwyn's strengths and passions, possibly even better than Lamia, and supported them relentlessly in her tutelage, incorporating the natural environment into her lesson plans.

Their little family was everything to Carwyn growing up. It was full of love, joy, music, and abundance. It had never occurred to zir that there was anything missing, until ze started to wonder how ze could get some of those things for zirself.

Friends came easily to Carwyn as ze was quick with a welcoming grin and listening ear. Ze noticed things about people, divined more than people knew, and had a knack for using what ze could see to make fast friends. But as Carwyn looked around at the stable relationships ze observed among those who spent their time in one place, zir nomadic life had slowly begun to weight heavily on zir. Ze didn't need the stability of staying in one place, but ze was starting to think that perhaps ze wouldn't find exactly what ze sought without settling down for a time.

"Mother. Father. Yana." They were all seated around the table in their upstate New York home before an elaborate meal when Carwyn chose to broach the topic. It was zir fifteenth birthday and they had asked for zir wish. "I want to go to a proper school. I... Well I want to be able to make friends."

"What do you mean?" Yana asked, rubbing her gently sloping baby bump and looking at zir earnestly. "You have many friends! Everywhere we go, you are so beloved, Caryusha! Why would you desire to leave us?"

But zir mother was looking at Carwyn with a discerning eye, the one ze knew saw more than she would reveal. As the most foreceful personality in the family, she was the final say in the household, and they all looked to her for her thoughts. "I think you're quite right, dearest. You have gotten the best we could ever offer you, but with Yana's baby coming soon, I suspect your studies may need a firmer direction."

"I can have baby and teach Caryusha!" Yana was mildly outraged.

Lamia looked lovingly at Yana and reached to pat her stomach. "Aur," she crooned, eliciting a blush. "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should burden yourself. In fact," and with that she drew herself up to her most imperial stature and addressed the entire table. "I think we should all take a little time to settle after this tour season is done, don't you, husband?"

On Yana's other side, Leland picked up his glass in response and eyed his family gathered around the table. "For you, my love, my rock, and my heart, I would move a mountain and still a river."

"That wouldn't be good for the environment." Carwyn affected a mockingly grave expression, in jest and absolute seriousness all at once.

Lamia laughed and leaned to kiss their hair. "My sweet child." She picked up her glass and turned to Leland, Yana and Carwyn following suit.

When everyone had raised their glass, Leland said, "To a few years of being the mountain instead of the river."

They clinked glasses and drank.

Not long after, zir mother called zir into her studio. "Yana and I have discussed it, and we think you should attend Hogwarts. She'll be spending some of the rest of the spring to educate you on the school, its history, and the expectations of your time there. Understand, going to Hogwarts will not be anything like what you've gotten used to. You'll be expected to dress a certain way and follow specific codes of behavior." She paused for a moment. There had only been a handful of times in Carwyn's life that zir had experienced anything like hesitation or uncertainty from zir mother. It was so rare it was almost unheard of. It gave zir pause and leant a gravity to the conversation ze hadn't thought to expect. "There are...stricter codes in a place like that. You won't be permitted to...interface with girls in the same way, and may find yourself...lumped in with the boys."

"Oh." Carwyn considered what zir mother was trying to tell zir. It wasn't something that ze were unused to in theory, but in practice zir position as the child of the world's leading Harpist Sonomancer--in addition to one of the world's most terrifying women--and the largest single donor to most of the Wizarding World's greatest arts exhibitions had shielded zir from the bulk of it. Ze didn't consider the gender of zir friends beyond what they evidently wished for themselves. Included in sleepovers with the girls, ze participated in gabbing about the cute people they had all seen at the recent gala. Though some occaisionally eyed zir clothing with unfavorable scrutiny, Carwyn wore whatever achieved zir goals for the day on a wide spectrum. Binary choices never made much sense to zir, and Lamia, Leland, and Yana had always accepted that about that Carwyn. Perhaps, ze sometimes thought, it didn't make much sense to them either, as ze noticed the relvoving door of companions they all took from time to time.

"I'm sure everyone will love you exactly as you are, dearest," Lamia said with motherly gentleness, a tone reserved for zir and zir alone. "But it may feel awkward, for a time."

Carwyn hadn't expended any energy in attempting to divine what lay ahead. It could be anything, and ze would take it as it came, as ze always had. Smiling zir small, private smile, one that spoke of mysteries hidden behind the teeth, ze said, "I'm sure it will all work out, mom." When she hugged zir, Carwyn thought it was perhaps somewhat tighter and warmer than usual, and hugged back in equal measure.

Option 2:

That rat of his was in for it now.

The gray little rascal had disappeared from his clutches at breakfast. Again.

Before Hugh even knew what was happening, Merlin had shot across the floor, somehow managing to avoid all the feet walking across the hall and had escaped through the open doors.

Which meant that Hugh was now stomping through rows of flowers and other various flora, searching for the small creature. It was like the rat knew Hugh was allergic to most flowers. Merlin always chose to run to the gardens whenever he got away from Hugh. It was as if the rat did not want to have him for an owner.

Hugh had named his pet Merlin because he had hoped the powerful name would give the rat more incentive to be more than a rat. Not that he expected Merlin to change into a wizard or anything, but rats were just so...useless, for the most part. With a name like Merlin, Hugh thought it might give the rat purpose.

The only purpose Merlin seemed to have was getting away from Hugh as often as possible.

As the fifth year trudged into the second row of flowers, not taking much care to avoid trampling the first row, he felt the first sneeze building up pressure in his nose and behind his eyes.

"You blasted rat! Where are you?"

He pulled apart a section of bright red flowers; he didn't know what they were called because he despised flowers, and ducked his head low to peer into the depths of the flowerbed. It was moving closer in proximity to the flowers that finally did it. Hugh took in three great breaths and then let out an almighty sneeze. It was strong enough to disturb some of the dirt on the ground before him.

Groaning, he stood up again and wiped his nose on his sleeve. It was as he was turning his head, his nose running up and down his arm, that movement in his peripheral vision caught his attention. Normally one who preferred to put his best face forward, Hugh was a bit embarrassed to be caught wiping his runny nose on his robes.

Nevertheless, Hugh put on his best haughty voice. albeit a bit thickly with his plugged nose and said, "Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

Roleplay Response:
What Carwyn could see from inside the castle had indicated a glorious day outside its walls and the moment ze completed zir studies for the day, Carwyn ran out to bask in the glory of a fine day. The air smelt of earth and ozone and pure, unadulterated bliss. The rules demanded that Carwyn stay out of the forest, and though it ate at ze not to be allowed to explored amongst the nearby wood, ze wanted to make zir family proud. So instead of wandering into the trees as ze wished, Carwyn headed towards zir favored alternative, the Castle Gardens. They weren't as stunning as zir gardens at home, but they suited Hogwarts just fine. Sometimes, Carwyn took it upon zirself to clean up the beds and care for whatever grew there. If anyone minded, no one ever said so. The place needed frequent maintenance. It was, unfortunately, quite clear that many in the school didn't share zir reverence for nature, if Herbology class was anything to go by. Even so, Carwyn had not prepared for such sights as ze saw when stepping out into the bright day.

A sense of dread pervaded Carwyn's mind as ze rounded on the gardens to find zir beloved flora destroyed. It was not a wholly unfamiliar sight. Carwyn didn't know who kept destroying the flower beds, but ze wished that one day a rose thorn would slice into them to brand them as permanent enemy to nature. It appeared that today was lucky for Carwyn, as finally at least one perpetrator of the destruction was still there. Bereft, ze stared at the person who still had dirt on their hands from the way they had so unceremoniously yanked a fistful of anemone in full bloom from their beds. Ze could almost feel their pain where some had been uprooted entirely while others were snapped from the stem.

"Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

Ze was flabbergasted. After what this person had done, they had no business scolding Carwyn. Ze continued to stare as the words grew in zir chest. With a measured, but stern tone ze thought zir mother would be proud of, Carwyn glowered and said, "You have just destroyed half this garden," ze gestured around at the trampled plants. "and you have the gall to speak to me about what is impolite? Were you raised with such disrespect for not just the environment but the hard work of others, or are you just so selfish you don't care about the harm you mete out?"

A rat skittering amongst the flowers caught zir eye, but Carwyn ignored it. The garden was for everyone, no matter the species, and it darkened zir mood to see the evidence that some of zir schoolmates couldn't respect that.
