Birthday:August 20, 1961

Hometown: Windswept Cottage, North of Laide, Scottish Highlands

Bloodline:
Pureblood

Magical Strength (pick one):

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Divination

Year (pick two): First/Second

Biography:

What did it mean to appear to be true?

Verisimilitude St. Clair (or, because that was quite a mouthful, Veri) always took that to mean that the truth was important - in the here and now. When she was six, the other kids in Laide began to ask their parents where they had come from. Veri had received conflicting information: either it was from a stork, delivered by the Royal Post, or (most worryingly of all) they grew inside of people’s stomachs before bursting out.

So, Veri asked her mother where she had come from and received a different answer.

‘Oh, you were just here one day.’

And, as far as Veri could tell, that was the truth. Her mother lived in the future, dipping her toes in the rivers of time to try to part the veil between what had been and what would be. Which made, of course, Veri want to do the exact opposite: she lived for the now, for what was real, for what she could hold in her hands.

It didn’t matter what ‘that’ was. She had once nicked her mother’s broom (at 9) and took it for a test flight. Another time, her and a couple of her friends snuck into a haunted shack (even if ghosts were real, it didn’t mean this one had ghosts in it). The now mattered most.

What was happening now, of course, was she was preparing to attend Hogwarts. Most girls would have a lot to prepare for: she was Lillian St. Clair’s daughter, after all, heir to a long line of Seers. Then again, she had just (as far as her mother could recall, but her mother had also forgotten that Tuesday existed for a few years) appeared one day out of the blue - that might be worth investigating.

Veri didn’t care about either of those things. She wanted to see the world as it was, not as it had been, or would be. That meant flying broomsticks, making friends, and learning magic.

Especially any magic other than Divination.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request:
Open. Her mother was in Slytherin but she could go anywhere.

Personality:
Veri doesn’t like to back down from a challenge. She’s quick and observant and is always ready to drop a cutting remark, but she tries to save that for people that deserve it. She wants to find out more about the world and would definitely sneak out if it meant she could discover a secret about the castle.

Appearance:
Veri is thin and lanky, with pale skin (there is not that much sun on the Scottish coast, just rain) and curly black hair. She seems to have a reverse fashion sense, with the ability to pick out drab trousers, drab shirts, and even drab umbrellas.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

Roleplay Response:
Veri was not afraid.

Okay, that was, perhaps, the exact opposite of verisilimitude, in that it was very much like something that did not seem true. Her heart was beating a little faster as the shadows crept and danced on the walls of the dungeon, while she could feel the unmistakable drip of sweat on her brow.

Those were things that would mean ‘afraid.’

Maybe this was a better time for a convenient lie. If she could just present herself as being brave and bold (and, could she?) then Veri would appear that way to the world. Who else knew what lay in the thoughts of her own head?

It wasn’t as if people could read her internal monoluge, that would be entirely too frightening.

Now, what was she looking for? Yes. There was a rumour of a so-called ‘pool’ which was not the sort that was used on tables, or used in gambling. Apparently, someone decided to put one of these things in the basement of a castle, because if there was anything stone dungeon walls needed it was more dampness.

That’s when the call came out, a sharp ‘hello’ followed by a call for Emma Birch.

Now, that was an old rumour she had been worried about. Veri’s mother had told her about Emma Birch (in a vague, roundabout sort of way) that had prepared her for when older students in her house tried to accost her with the tale. It seems the girl who shouted out, someone she vaguely recognized from the sort as ‘Eva-something,’ had not taken to heart.

“I don’t think asking if a ghost is here is a good way of summoning one.” Veri straightened herself out - tall for her age, it was easier to feel ‘confident’ if she was standing straight up. “Ghosts are real, though I’m not sure Emma Birch is.”

An old tale, though perhaps it was one with merit.

“Would you like help finding her?”
