Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Edith “Edie” Raina Adler

Birthday: February 3, 1944

Hometown: St. Gilgen, Austria ; currently resides in London, England

Bloodline: Halfblood

Magical Strength (pick one): Charms

Magical Weakness (pick one): Divination

Year (pick two): Third, fourth

Biography:
Five years into their marriage, Claudia and Wilhelm Adler decided it was time to have a child. It was an unusual decision for the couple, who were approaching their forties, but they were an unusual match. Claudia was a widow and mother to a seven-year-old boy: Rolf, Wilhelm was not. She was from a well-off family, Wilhelm was not. Claudia was a muggle, Wilhelm was not… And yet, against all odds, the two were together, forging a new, blended life in an old house in the country side of Austria. There was only one rule between the couple, they would never talk about magic unless absolutely important, and both parties complied. Of course, the decision to have their own child was never something the two had talked about seriously, especially given their agreement, but one day Claudia Adler had decided that she wanted another child, and that was that. A year and a half later, Edith Raina Adler was born.

Edie’s childhood in St. Gilgen still swirls through her mind like a cozy dream scape of things explored and adventures not yet taken. And although the blended family moved to London when she was only seven, she still fondly recalls the sweet memories of her childhood through a pair of well-worn rose-colored glasses. Like those crisp summer days spent running along Austrian Alps, chasing fireflies, and rolling through tall green grass so many times she would come up dizzy, with static tousled hair and white garments now green streaked and muddied- much to her mother’s dismay. And those days spent riding her bicycle with Rolf to the bakery for fresh breads and cakes and sweets, before meeting up with their friends in the square to play games. Or even the first time she realized she was a witch like her father’s side of the family. Edie had stood there wide eyed and bowlegged, somehow having managed to land on her feet completely unscathed after accidentally falling off of the roof of the family’s garden shed… thanks to an unfortunate dare from her older brother. Her mother wasn’t sure how to feel about her darling daughter being a witch, and she made it known. Edie, however, was excited for this new adventure and secretly tried to do daring things to “create the magic” again. Few attempts actually worked, and she was often left with scrapes and scratches. Once her scheme to recreate a moment of magic had even left with her arm in a sling, which then stopped any further attempts altogether.

However, her new life in London was something completely different. There were no sprawling green hills, no fresh lakes to swim in, or fireflies to catch in jars. There were only concrete slabs, and high rises, and yellow raincoats, and hours spent stuck inside the museum her mother volunteered at. Although she knew it was because of a job opening for her father in the Ministry of Magic, a position her father scarcely mentioned, Edie often wondered if Claudia had made them move to London in order to have more control over her life. What her mother had once allowed, suddenly became unacceptable. Edie could no longer run around freely, or play pranks on her brother, or even dirty her clothes from splashing in puddles. Edie was now “becoming a young lady,” and that meant practicing manners, and studying art works, and being quiet and polite… and Edie hated it. She hated primary school, and she hated her mother’s rules and she hated London. She longed for her life in Austria, for the German language, for freedom, and she longed to experience that little bit of magic again.

Suddenly Edie was turning eleven, shooting up nearly four inches in height just in time for her birthday. Her mother commented that it was the perfect time to hit a growth spurt, that her birthday meant new clothes and that Edie was just the luckiest little girl… Edie Adler wasn’t so sure about that. At least that was, until she received her letter to Hogwarts. Suddenly the magic she dreamed of experiencing again, especially during those painfully dull hours at primary school, were in her grasp. And her father had a lot to say about it. Wilhelm Adler rarely had a lot to say about anything, especially not to Edie, so for once she listened. And she learned about this magical world, a world in which she had partially grown up in, and she realized that she knew barely anything about. Abruptly, before her birthday candles had even been blown out, it was decided that Edie would be attending Hogwarts to get a “proper education” in magic. Claudia Adler, who had a lot to say about everything, and especially to Edie, had nothing to say at all.

Although she loved it immediately, Hogwarts wasn’t exactly what Edie Adler had hoped it would be. For one thing, most of the lessons were long and boring, especially History of Magic, and in her humble opinion, there were far too many rules to follow. But she liked the castle, and the people, and she especially loved the magic. As her first year ended, and lapsed into her second, Edie began to long for more: more adventure, more new experiences, and more opportunities for fun. Now, going into her third year, Edie Adler has a whole load of new ideas to better enrich her time at Hogwarts. This time, it includes new fun schemes, and maybe- as long as she doesn’t get in trouble- a little bit of mischief, she’s just looking for some people do it with.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

Personality:
Edie Adler has never been the best follower. Follower of trends, follower of directions, or follower of rules. Cursed with a rather strong sense of curiosity and independence, Edie has only ever really followed one thing in her life, her own intuition, and it has never really bared her well. Her school life has suffered immensely as a result of her own insatiable need to do her own thing; and while she is a rather intelligent, quick witted girl, she finds herself ill-suited and bored in a classroom setting.

However, Edie is a dreamer with a determination to experience the world. She likes exploring and deeply desires to travel on her own, although has little idea how exactly she’s going to do that. Her passion to explore and experience life is often the driving force behind all of her actions, and she likes spending her free time doodling her dreams into a physical reality- drawing out city plans and skylines she has only ever seen in photos.

On the outside Edie Adler always seems confident and carefree, and at face value, she truly is a free spirit with little about what people think of her. Unfortunately, this also tends to manifest into a lack of awareness for other’s feelings. Not to say she is exactly malicious, but instead more self-focused, and even at times self-centered. Yet, to those who can keep up with her constant surges of energy, crazy ideas for adventures, and a shortage of deep emotional awareness (she doesn’t do well with crying), Edie is a fierce and loyal friend, who is always sure to bring along fun- and a little bit of mayhem- wherever she goes.

Appearance:
Tall and lanky, with a mess of unkept blonde hair, two wide hazel eyes, and a speckling of freckles, Edie Adler was always what her mother described as an “unconventional beauty.” Not that the statement is quite fair to her physical beauty, but Edie’s nonchalant approach to her appearance through the years has done little to win her stylish mother’s favor. Edie likes her hair un-brushed and her clothes comfortable, as of now she has little inclination to ever try makeup, and she could find a million things to do before spending her time slaving over her appearance. Undeniably however, Edie bares a striking resemblance to her mother, mirroring the elder Adler’s upturned nose, porcelain complexion, and prominent pout.

Option 2:

Today was the last day Edie Adler would be waking up early. Ever. Again. She had promised this to herself in the Great Hall, while slinging back a cup coffee- well, if you even dared to call the milk and sugar saturated drink “coffee.” She had only gone to bed at midnight, two whole hours earlier than normal, and yet that earlier alarm hadn’t gotten any easier. Thus, she had decided that this was definitely it, the last day of waking up early. She washed the bitter taste of tiredness down with another gulp of caffeine, the taste wasn’t pleasant, but she managed. She found solace in the- sure to be fruitless- promise she had made to herself.

That was when the swish of a dark robe in motion caught her eye. Edie Adler couldn’t help but stare as a boy around her age took off in pursuit of something- although she wasn’t sure what. Wasn’t that interesting?

Had she not been about to leave the Great Hall, she probably wouldn’t have thought much about it… but given that she was a little early for a particularly boring lesson, Edie Adler decided perhaps she could take a little detour. After all, whatever he was up to was definitely more fun than the unpleasant interaction with caffeine she had been formally engaged in.

She did have to admit though, she felt a little weird about trailing after him. Especially now as he stepped into the gardens and began stomping through the path of many beautifully maintained flowers. And wait, did he just yell something about a rat? Had Edie not been the one watching him, she would’ve had to conclude that the boy was a bit off his rocker… but given her current situation, she figured she didn’t have much room to judge.

The young girl went to turn away, figuring it was probably none of her business, and then she saw it. A flash of furry grey, darting through a field of red and whites, greens and muddied browns. She figured at once that it must have been the rat he had yelled about. She just wasn’t sure what to do in the moment. On the one hand, she most likely had just seen what the boy was chasing after… but on the other hand, she had totally just followed him here to watch him struggle. Edie thought that might be a little awkward… So, she kept quiet.

Then he sneezed. A sneeze that rivaled all of the obnoxiously loud sneezes Edie had ever heard in her life. Once again, she felt drawn back into his situation, and the ridiculousness of it all caused her to laugh. Not exactly at the boy… but not exactly with him either. Edie Adler wasn’t trying to be mean, she really wasn’t, but she had never seen someone so ridiculously outraged while stomping through flowers. She couldn’t help herself. She hadn’t once however, consider if he had heard her, or what he might have thought about her reaction, even as he turned towards her.

“Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare.”

Well, at least he hadn’t noticed that she had followed him.

“Oh, sorry.” Edie Adler’s voice was light, as if she was laughing off the whole interaction. “It's just not every day you see someone so angry to be surrounded by flowers.”

She turned towards him, tucked a stray hair behind her ear, and continued. “You know, if you’re looking for a rat, I have a cat that’s really swell at finding them… Should I go get him?”

Beat.

She hoped he didn’t think she was serious.

“I’m joking,” Edie interjected, just in case. “Although, I’m pretty sure I saw something go that way.”
