Biography:

Kaguya’s legs were long and gangly, but most importantly, they itched to walk somewhere far away.

Somewhere familiar.

Somewhere she lived a lifetime ago.

It was the middle of Kaya’s fourth year, and something interesting had landed into her possession: a bright, informational flyer that she found haphazardly stuffed in her bookbag. Normally, all the flyers she’d ever come across at Hogwarts advertised weird student clubs or were missing pet posters, and she typically just folded them into paper airplanes and aimed them for the trash.

(Well, except the missing pet posters that showed particularly cute cats—Kaguya collected those like trophies. She had earned Galleons just through ransom money!)

This flyer was different though. STUDY IN EXOTIC DESTINATIONS! it yelled excitedly in bright, stylized letters. At first, it had been covered in illustrations of tropical jungles that swayed to invisible winds, but every so often the scenery shifted into glistening snow-capped mountains or to towering steel skyscrapers.

Kaguya’s favorite, however, had been the pictures of pink rustling trees littering cobblestone paths with their flowers and tall crimson gates leading to shrines whose gods she wasn’t privy to.

“Ma-hou-to-ko-ro,” she sounded out carefully. “Mahouko—no, Mahoutorok—pffpfpfpfft, MA-HOU-TO-KO-RO. Mahoutokoro.”

Her head turned slyly toward the stack of language learning books that she had originally bought in her third year after experiencing a burst of motivation to learn her native language. Basic English-Japanese Dictionary, Japanese 101, and Japanese for Beginners all under a thin layer of dust.

“Hm.”

***

In June of 1959, Kaguya returned from a year in Japan and back to her wonderful little flat in Knockturn Alley. Almost immediately, she holed herself up in her room as usual, refusing conversation with her father and sparing a few words for Yuusuke, who she had decided early on didn’t deserve her bratty, teenage attitude at the same magnitude as Inari.

She thought about her friends at Mahoutokoro, the little group that had accepted her within their ranks on the very first day classes began—Natsumi, Chiyoko, Kazuko, and Hoshi. She thought about her host family, the Uenos, and their seven-year-old son, Takashi, who was excited that he wasn’t the only one going to school for the first time.

She thought about the picture of her mom she saw in the trophy room at school.

A bored, curious Kaguya had asked Kazuko to read off the names of all the Quidditch teams throughout the years, and Kazuko, equally bored and curious, happily complied. They had just reached one of the 1937 teams when one list caught Kaguya’s interest.

“Sakamoto Akiko, Toda Kaori, Nakada Katsuo, Nakamura Atsushi, Fujimaki Azumi—”

Kaguya inhaled sharply. “Fujimaki Azumi?”

“Azumi’s a pretty name, isn’t it?”

“Wait, let me see...”

Her eyes followed where Kazuko’s pointer finger had stopped on the plaque—right on top of the name 藤巻 杏美. Just above, there was a photo of that particular team, all comically stone-faced until one girl burst into laughter and the rest followed suit. “Which one’s Fujimaki Azumi?” she asked.

“Second row, third from the left. She’s the one who laughs first.”

In a few hours, they had finished reading all of the names, leaving Kazuko’s voice hoarse and Kaguya all giggly at how ridiculous she sounded. But, just before curfew, Kaguya returned back to the trophy room. She studied her mother’s face for a long time.

In the only photo Kaguya ever had of her, Azumi had been laughing too.

***

Kaguya’s legs were long and gangly, but most importantly, they ached to search for an answer.

An answer that her father would never give.

An answer that she would have to figure out on her own.

… An answer that she would have to figure out later, because it
definitely wasn’t in England of all places!

Option I:

Kaguya Märchen had a horrible habit of lending out Transfiguration essays, and Clarissa Harlock had a horrible habit of never returning them.

If that plagiarizing witch didn’t want to have another meet-and-greet with Kaya’s fists, maybe she should have written five pages on Vanishment herself instead of having to pay three Galleons for Kaya’s generous services—this was her fourth time asking for help, and she still didn’t understand the rules? Tried to bend them in her favor, tried to buy a little more time?

“HARLOOOOOCCCCKKKKK!” Kaya yelled the very moment her feet reached the dungeon floors. No, Clarissa Harlock didn’t deserve even the most microscopic particle of her sympathy. In fact, Kaguya Märchen was dead set on chewing that girl out.

(Plus, the essay was due in two hours. That added an extra snap to her bite.)

Instead of the stalking predator she normally would have been, Kaya made noise. She yelled, she shrieked, and no, she did not care if she was interrupting anyone’s beauty sleep. Her grades were on the line, for Merlin’s sake, and it was all Harlock’s fault!

Though, judging by a flimsy little voice echoing feebly through the dungeons, it would all have to wait. Kaya rolled her eyes, quit her whining, and went on to locate the poor soul who sounded definitely unfamiliar with Slytherin territory. Confident in the shadows, the girl weaved between columns until she stumbled upon a poor first year—a bright little daisy in a field of deadly nightshade. Probably sent by a particularly nasty group of Gryffindor girls by the looks of it.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

“No,” Kaya butted in simply. “She doesn’t have any business in the living world. Run along now, kid. You’re wasting your time down here.”
