Suggestions & Questions / Typos!
« on: 23/04/2019 at 20:10 »
Hello!

I posted Robert Matthew Carter's app in all caps - that was unintentional. Could I get the title change to proper caps, please? And there's a link that I have in there that was supposed to post an image for my own reference (in Gdoc), but it's scrolling the application unnecessarily on the site. I don't mind it remaining in there as a URL - but I haven't claimed the face yet! Could you please remove the link?

I found a small typo in the magic rules under divination:
Sensing the Otherworld
A - You can talk to invisible spirits (if you know theyre there!), but you cannot see them, or hear what they say back

Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Robert Matthew Carter. Nicknames, in order of most preferred to least: “Reb,” “Rob,” “Robert,” “Roberto,” “Robbie,” “Bertie,” “Bob,” “Bobert,” “Puke-Breath,” “Robert Matthew Carter.”

Birthday: February 10th, 1945.

Hometown: Hogsmeade, Scotland.

Bloodline: Halfblood.

Magical Strength (pick one): Divination.

Magical Weakness (pick one): Transfiguration.

Year (pick two): 1st | 2nd.

Biography:
If you are applying to be a first, second, or third year, your biography must be at least one hundred words long.

Unlike his siblings, Rob remembered a time when he was part of a real family--one with a mother and a father with what he thought was a happy life. After Chrissy was born, their father decided that they weren’t important anymore. He left and broke Rob’s and mom’s heart. Maybe it’d been Rob’s fault for not doing enough around the house. Maybe mommy didn’t actually love Rob enough to stick around. Either way, they both... went away.

Rob waited for his smaller family to be adopted. He prepared for the day he would have to fight their new parents, because he’d demand that they be adopted together. But years went by and they remained at the Home-That-Is-Certainly-Not-Our-Home. Unwanted, echoed in his head every night he curled up with Chrissy on the thin mattress.

His magical prowess manifested well before he was left to the keepers at the orphanage. He’d been able to do weird things, sometimes fantastic things, when it least suited him. It all seemed to coincide when he was angry or sleepy. Regardless, it was no surprise to everyone except him. He’d have to leave Chrissy behind? He and Sarah would have to leave their little brother and sister behind while they went to the School-Beyond-The-Gate starting in September.

Thank Merlin for scholarships. Though everything was second-hand, he was going to Hogwarts. Still, Rob felt more like his father than he cared to, leaving Chrissy behind in Hogsmeade.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

House Request: Hufflepuff.

Personality: Volatile, in a word.

Rob is a toxic concoction of unrevealed pain which manifests in his bouts of anger to stave off his vulnerability. His short-fused temper is as startling as it is scary. He’d never hit anyone in anger, but the way his face becomes bright red in contrast with his light hair, the way his eyes get so mean and hard, anyone might believe it - except his siblings.

Every day is a bad day to Rob. Unable to let himself be vulnerable with anyone, he has forced himself to harden his exterior - he has to be the father of the family. His littlest sister needs him as her protector. While he often rubs his little brother the wrong way, he’ll always take his side if it’s them versus the world. Even though it grates him that his twin is technically older, he assumes as much a louder position of authority over her as she does him. In a way, they provide balance to each other.

So why Hufflepuff? He’s phenomenal at finding the best way to hurt someone that’s been mean to his littlest sister or even little brother. He’s loyal to anyone he considers family. While life is not fair, he strives to work hard to make amends for having driven off his parents and make it feel more fair to his brother and sisters by preparing them for the real world. He is dedicated to becoming a better person, or at least the person his siblings need him to be.

The easiest way to win him over is with food. While he might be intimidating at first glance, he’s really not difficult to get along with. He’s easy going, more willing to go with the flow because of his twin’s penchant for driving their agenda. So long as he isn’t surprised, insulted, or made to feel small - he is flexible, if stubborn. His usual emotional status is tousle-haired sleepy and he’s as likely to be found sleeping as he is eating.

Aside from food, he loves animals and is uncommonly gentle with them. It’s as if he’s a completely different person. Still, he’s all about tough love because he doesn’t want anyone to ever feel the way he does - worthless.

Appearance: Face claim: [img=https://i.pinimg.com/originals/44/29/16/4429167380698b2379a45f15ff80e242.gif] Jeremy Sumpter - looking at when he played in Peter Pan. Sun bleached blonde hair, messy. His face is a little longer than his sister’s. His smile is always worn tightly on his thin lips - which makes his smile look more mean than he intends. He has a resting disillusioned face because he never wants anyone to think he’s been surprised. He should be taller than he is, but malnutrition may have stunted some of his growth. Rob still has room to grow and large feet that promise he’ll grow several inches, if not more, while at Hogwarts.

Physically, he’s always tired. Until he earned a place in Hogwarts, he didn’t have access to enough food. So he will likely go from being tired because he had no energy to being tired because of food coma. If he didn’t have his twin, he might be tempted sleep through his classes.

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

It’d been a long, lazy Saturday. His first one since he’d got to Hogwarts. Well, first Saturday at any rate. Maybe they weren’t all boring or long or lazy. All of his classes had started with their boring class syllabus, but already he had homework. Piles of reading that the first years were required to do before the next block of classes. None of that held his interest though. He had all day Sunday to try to work on them if Sarah caught him not having finished the assignments already. Instead, Rob had an assignment of his own. It required that he find some privacy where nobody could overhear him.

Rob heard someone crying last night in the common room. It was another firstie, like him. Like him, he wondered if they were homesick. Not that Rob had a home to go to, but he missed his little sister - and his little brother, too, he guessed. So he was trying to make a glass flower he’d found chime a lullabye. Maybe it’d help his housemate sleep.

A nestled corner in an abandoned section of the dungeons seemed perfect. Since there weren’t any classes today, he guessed it’d be the most privacy he could afford at Hogwarts. Thinking on it, he never had any privacy at the Home either.

A half hour of chanting the same phrase over and over again yielded nothing. The glass flower stayed dumb silent.

Rob didn’t catch the other first year’s whisper. But her “hello” made him jerk, dropping his Second Chance wand and the flower. Abruptly halting the trick he’d been practicing, he winced as the flower shattered against the unforgiving dungeon floor. She’d startled him. Embarrassment flushed through him, making him feel sick. He’d been found out. Heat rose to the tips of his ears, his face going iconically red as his temper flared.

He jerked around, feeling his robes snag on some unseen rough edge on the dungeon wall. His mouth was terribly dry, but he saw the other’s figure and worried that she’d know what he was up to. Or think he was stupid for trying.

“Why’d you have to go and do that, you dolt?” He spat angrily. Tightly, Rob held onto that anger, wrapped it around him to camouflage the goosebumps. Anything was better than letting her know how much she’d scared him.

Threading indignation into his words, he taunted, “You got nothing better to do than be a busy-body?” Fearful that they’d be caught with this mess, Rob decided it was time to leave. They’d both made so much noise - him in particular with his shouting.

Leaving the glass shards behind, Rob huffed and pushed past the blonde girl. He’d been stupid to try to do something nice for a stranger anyway. Chrissy was prolly bawling her eyes out right now. She needed his attention, not some stupid rich git. Miserable, Rob trudged two steps towards the stairwell. For a fraction of a second, he regretted having yelled at the girl, but immediately reassured himself that he’d been doing nothing wrong and she’d slighted him. Then he realized a vital piece of wizardry wasn’t on his person.

His stomach curdled, turning into a pit of hardened ice as he slowly turned around. Though he didn’t scowl, his expression read that he still had business with her, or at least with whatever his eyes scanned for on the dungeon floor behind her feet.
