Biography:To understand Roark you have to understand his family first. The Bacchus' are a special breed of pure-blooded Wizards.
Special in that they as a whole are utterly cutthroat held together with mutually assured destruction and the belief that they will eventually get to the gold at the end of the long bloody rainbow. The Bacchus family business was originally based in Virginia when it first began with Rincewind Bacchus in the 1800s. It's only grown and has a hand in many dealings and businesses from the West Coast to the East Coast. Through betrayal and bloodshed, the reigns have changed hands many times over the years. Lysander Bacchus, Roark's grandfather, has been able to keep the proverbial crown the longest at 57 years and counting. It is rumored that he had his own brother killed to gain this position- though with nothing but hearsay they can't prove anything. It's vast and because of the ever-changing leadership, every member of the family believes that
they are the rightful heir. But this brief overview doesn't encompass the family dynamic properly.
So, if you would, imagine that you're at the local public pool and that it is overflowing with every color, shape, and size of shark. Pretend that these sharks are
hungry- haven't eaten in two weeks
hungry. Now imagine somebody chucks a cow slathered in barbecue sauce in the center of all that. There’s going to be blood and gore, people screaming, lots of crying, and innocent bystanders traumatized for life. Now, if you can, pretend those hungry sharks are aunts, uncles, and relatives and that the cow is actually a shockingly large family fortune/empire. Roark is a direct descendant of the current holder of the empire and will, therefore, inherit everything, which makes him the only obstacle standing between the hungry sharks and the barbequed cow.
Marceline Bacchus and Delaney Raver married for money, power, and social status. Marceline wanted out from under her father’s thumb and to prove to him that she deserved to inherit the company. She found a willing and obedient pawn in Delaney Raver. The sole heir and soon to be CEO of Raver Holdings. Delaney had never worked a day in his life and didn’t ever plan to do so. He married Marceline under the agreement that she would take the reins and nothing would interfere with his playboy lifestyle. Roark was born into a loveless home three years later. His grandfather, being the sexist bigot that he is, named Roark the inheritor of his empire instead of his more than capable daughter.
At his Grandfather’s insistence, Roark has had the best education money can buy. He had tutors for every subject and was a part of every club and extracurricular they could fit into his schedule from the age of four. Roark decided quite early in life that he did not want to attend Ilvermorny as that was where all of his family had and were attending. He fought hard to be sent to Hogwarts and was only granted permission after years of convincing and compromise. The deal was that he would live with his father, who'd set up a permanent residence in the UK years before Roark was even born, and attend Hogwarts. He would begin training to take over the company in his third year and would spend every summer with Lysander.
With his father constantly off galavanting around the world and his mother otherwise occupied with her corporations and trying to overthrow her father's regime, Roark has always been left to his own devices. His upbringing was as muggle as it was magical. The Bacchus’ are firm believers in keeping a foot planted firmly on each side of the divide. Both sides are profitable and it would be pure madness to put all their eggs in one basket. They are pure-blood when it suits their purposes and can further their reach but other than that the Bacchus’ don't give any mind to blood status.
Roark is mostly just… tired. Tired of having to be on guard against relentless sabotage or the stray hex or curse from one of his family members. Tired of being groomed to be the
heir. Tired of being a Bacchus. Just so tired. At Hogwarts, he doesn’t have to be any of that. Doesn’t have to watch his back and front and sides. Doesn’t have to train and study and be the most ruthless and informed person in the room at all times. Hogwarts is a paradise that he uses to escape the constant drama and diabolical machinations of his family. Where his relative's hunger for money and power Roark mostly just hungers for a good book and carbs. He doesn’t do extracurriculars or sports if he can help it and mostly just keeps to himself.
Roark keeps a low profile and tries very hard not to create or take part in any drama. The fact that he has to give up Hogwarts in a couple of years is something that weighs heavily on him. Roark’s path has been carved out for him since infancy and he isn’t ready to let go of the peace and security Hogwarts has given him and be the person his family expects him to be.

Personality:As a result of his rather ruthless upbringing, Roark is above all
adaptable. His outward personality shifts and reshapes to fit and survive the situation or the expectations of those around him. He’s found that the best persona to wear at Hogwarts is that of a harmless, laidback, and unobservant teen. This allows others to dismiss him and grants him liberties he wouldn’t have otherwise. He rarely shows his Bacchus self to anyone. If people knew what and who he actually was, it would be harder to control them.
In the Bacchus household, one has to be smarter, quicker, and more ruthless than everyone else in order to thrive. He has had to protect his birthright and his place in the family since day one. Around his family, Roark is conniving, suspicious, and coldly indifferent to anyone he hasn’t allowed himself to care for. He does not trust quickly, if at all, so even those in his inner circle are held at arm's length. He's got a plan b, c, d, and e in place for every circumstance. He is slow to anger but when provoked he goes directly for the throat with cold precise fury.
All the subterfuge is
exhausting. Roark secretly hates it. When no one is around to suspect he's thinking weak thoughts, he thinks he would like to leave it all behind. Just cut and run. Be maybe...
nice without having to have ulterior motives. Not have to be calculating his advantage with every new person he meets. Not be called soft and weak when he shows even an inkling of humanity. Roark sometimes thinks maybe he's a fraud of a Bacchus. If his family knew about his many soft moments, too many weak acts of kindness-- they would rip him apart, laughing as they did so.
Appearance:Roark is tall and thin at the start of every school year but by the time the last day rolls around he is tall and
chunky. Roark prefers to be chunky but thanks to the strict routine at home he is forced to start from scratch on gaining his ideal body type every year. He’s been growing into his gangly form since he hit 15 and he hates it, as it’s just another reminder that he’s leaving Hogwarts. Black hair that is only ever brushed when in the presence of his family. Observant dark eyes sit under thick brows. He dresses in dark colors, mostly hoodies and loose clothes he could comfortably sleep in, and usually has a paperback on him.

The gray little rascal had disappeared from his clutches at breakfast. Again.
Before Hugh even knew what was happening, Merlin had shot across the floor, somehow managing to avoid all the feet walking across the hall and had escaped through the open doors.
Which meant that Hugh was now stomping through rows of flowers and other various flora, searching for the small creature. It was like the rat knew Hugh was allergic to most flowers. Merlin always chose to run to the gardens whenever he got away from Hugh. It was as if the rat did not want to have him for an owner.
Hugh had named his pet Merlin because he had hoped the powerful name would give the rat more incentive to be more than a rat. Not that he expected Merlin to change into a wizard or anything, but rats were just so...useless, for the most part. With a name like Merlin, Hugh thought it might give the rat purpose.
The only purpose Merlin seemed to have was getting away from Hugh as often as possible.
As the fifth year trudged into the second row of flowers, not taking much care to avoid trampling the first row, he felt the first sneeze building up pressure in his nose and behind his eyes.
"You blasted rat! Where are you?"
He pulled apart a section of bright red flowers; he didn't know what they were called because he despised flowers, and ducked his head low to peer into the depths of the flowerbed. It was moving closer in proximity to the flowers that finally did it. Hugh took in three great breaths and then let out an almighty sneeze. It was strong enough to disturb some of the dirt on the ground before him.
Groaning, he stood up again and wiped his nose on his sleeve. It was as he was turning his head, his nose running up and down his arm, that movement in his peripheral vision caught his attention. Normally one who preferred to put his best face forward, Hugh was a bit embarrassed to be caught wiping his runny nose on his robes.
Nevertheless, Hugh put on his best haughty voice. albeit a bit thickly with his plugged nose and said, "Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."
Roleplay Response:Roark’s peace was blasted apart when some random kid waltzed into the gardens. He’d moved outside because his dorm had been too rowdy and everywhere else was swarming with students. The gardens were the only place he found that didn’t have
people. He was seated in the shade of a large tree reading his current muggle paperback book.
Apparently, Roark was just not going to get a chance to get into his book. He watched as the kid plowed through the flowers, paying no never mind to how he left a trail of trampled flowers in his wake.
"You blasted rat! Where are you?"Deciding to ignore the intrusion Roark went back to reading. Only to all but jump out of his skin at the sound of an almighty sneeze that seemed to echo. Heart beating in his throat Roark put his book down and glared at the kid who was not swiping his nose on his sleeve.
Gross."Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."Wow, and he was rude. He wanted to say something along the lines of he was here first and the kid could sod off. Unfortunately, Roark liked to keep a low profile and fighting with random kids was not keeping a low profile. So instead Roark arched an eyebrow and put his hands up in the universal sign of surrender.
“It’s hard not to stare when you’re making so much noise– no offense intended.” Which maybe wasn’t the most diplomatic of things to say but Roark was feeling grumpy.
