Biography:
Caius Thorne was born out of wedlock. His parents were Briony Travers and Hector Thorne and were as different as day and night. Briony came from an affluent Wizarding family that valued tradition over anything else. She was to be married to a wizard of good standing, whose family had connections and considerable influence on the Wizarding community. Meanwhile, Hector was a woodcutter and a handyman. He earned his living through taking on requests from the other villagers. Briony was visiting some of her friends in Kent and when she stopped by an inn, she met the ruggedly handsome Hector, and it went downhill from there.

Their romance lasted for all of two weeks and while they were very much in love, Briony left town without a warning. It was only about a year later that an old lady arrived at Hector’s place, giving him a handful of letters from Briony and a wicker basket that cradled a baby Caius. Despite the emotions that raged within him, Hector took the kid in. He had not even paused to think that he may not have had fathered this child. But out of love for Briony and pity for the motherless babe, this child might as well be his own.

The Thornes lived in a small cot near the forest that bordered the Kentish countryside. They lived a simple life, living on just enough to sustain them every day. Ever since his beloved had left him, Hector was definitely not the most pleasant bloke one will ever meet (it was worse when he was deep in his cups). He didn’t ask much about his mother, Hector did all the talking whenever he came home drunk.

Since they lived in a pretty isolated part of Kent, Caius didn’t have much friends. When he attended the school in the village, kids his age teased him mercilessly for the shoes he’d worn to school, they were old and utterly wrecked from frequent use. He couldn’t help that he lived far and had to walk to school. While he was the subject of every taunt, Caius was also avoided like a plague, not because he fought back with fervour. It seemed that whenever Caius was subjected to bullying, usually in the boy’s bathroom, the lights would flicker on and off without warning. Caius nor his father could explain such spooky happenings. Talks of ghost-hauntings grew rampant in their superstitious little village.

All had been well until his father disappeared into thin air on the eve of 1937. The people he’d grown up with had gone as well, he didn’t know what had happened to them, his recollection had been vague at that time but he knew something was very wrong. Only he and a handful of others remained on an empty field, no trace of an existing village or of anyone who inhabited it. He was nine years old.

Caius may not have had a pleasant relationship with his father, but he was the only family he had. He was scared, confused and aimless, having barely enough time to grieve his loss. A stranger picked him up from the roadside and sent him into an orphanage in west London where he would stay for years to come. Families would come to adopt him but the boy would always find a way to be disagreeable and he would run away when it proved difficult to live with his foster family. They weren’t all bad, some were quite a decent lot but Caius was determined to raise hell. He’d also developed an unhealthy grudge against his absent mother in that timespan. He’d expected she’d at least show her face and take him in. She never did.

When Caius turned 11, an invitation letter to Hogwarts was personally sent over by a scary-looking woman dressed in odd garments, explaining to the bewildered Caius that he possessed ‘special’ talents and that he was to be enrolled in a school with people like him. He did not like this idea at all. He hated change, it meant that his world was going to be turned upside down again, losing control was something he could not afford for another time.

He felt like a fish out of water when he first entered Hogwarts. Everything was so strange but it did explain the odd things that happened to him when he was a lot younger. He did not understand anything in this new environment, couldn’t even begin to comprehend the concept of magic. Finding out that he was a wizard was a difficult pill to swallow, he’d been raised to fear witchcraft, thanks to his father all he knew about them were bulbous warts, crooked noses and cauldrons. He hadn’t expected to be one.

Caius also didn’t expect for his classes to pique his interest. In fact, he began to learning things at an accelerated pace. The only problem was that he often misused his magic and he wasn’t the least apologetic for the hexes that befell his unfortunate victims. It seemed that these tiny accidents gave him a little control in his otherwise topsy-turvy life.

On his thirteenth birthday, he’d received a letter from his mother. She’d wanted to express her desire to meet him. That she would want more than anything to reconcile with him after all those years. Of course, he refused to see her, why should he? He owed her nothing for disappearing on them. Why would she care now when she couldn’t care less back then? She didn’t care when he lost his father or when he was stuck in that horrible orphanage, cycling through a different foster family every few months.

His mother’s family had influence and connections, apparently, it seemed like they wanted to take him in. While it presented certain opportunities, like a proper home and blood-related family members, there was no way in hell he would ever grant his mother’s wishes. After all this time? Not bloody likely. He would never give her that sort of satisfaction, he wouldn’t let her think that he was easily won over.

Caius is set to begin his fourth year in Hogwarts. He has no particular aim to be anything but a troublemaker even as the war rages on and darker times lay ahead of them. He also made it a personal mission to find out what his mother wanted from him and sever the familial ties that bound him to her.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: No preference.

Personality:
Caius can be quite a difficult person to befriend.

He’s prone to say whatever's on his mind whether people like it or not. When confronted, he would defend his actions and explain that he was just telling them what they needed to hear. It annoys him when people beat around the bush trying to tell him things. He’d rather they tell him directly and up front. He can be quite rude and unapologetic for his actions, and he may not have a real reason for being mean to people sometimes. A lot of things annoy him and people are at the top of his list.

He usually keeps to himself and he likes to think that he’s a lone wolf. He doesn’t see his being friendless a character flaw. He does socialize but only out of necessity and he can seem fake for interacting with people he thinks would give him an upperhand.

He doesn't think he’s as smart as people assume him to be, but he constantly surprises people with what he does know. He also has a tendency to bear a grudge against anyone who wrongs him and he can be quite vindictive if provoked. He also seems to have inherited his father's sullen nature. Caius tends to have a very bad sense of humour and will take them as insults against him.

He hates girls and acts more vehemently against them. He assumes that all women were like his mother, selfish, stupid and cannot be trusted.

Appearance:
He stands a little taller than most boys his age. Caius’ looks may seem striking due to the contrast between the darkness of his curly hair and his light eyes. His eyebrows are thick and his lips appear too wide for his face. He isn’t the type to groom himself unnecessarily, so he will appear dishevelled to many and he doesn’t mind this at all. The less approachable he seemed, the better.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.

Caius decided that he was skipping class.

He was not the sort of person who’d purposely miss his lessons; because, to be quite honest, he did like to learn despite what his peers may think of him. Not today. That Professor seemed to have it against him! He remembered the last time she asked him to stand for the rest of the class just because he had said her hair looked liked she had not showered for days. It was the truth. Her hair did look like a wretched mess.

Caius smiled to himself. He could imagine her beet-red face, like she was about to explode, she looked even funnier with her mousy, curly hair. Damn her, if she thought she could embarrass him like that again, she was dead wrong. He wondered if he could get back at her in some way, it would be good if he humiliated her in public.

He paused in his tracks, lost in thought and might’ve almost collided with the newcomer if he hadn’t sidestepped at the last minute.

He frowned at the stranger, her face was not familiar to him, probably some older student. He couldn’t think of a reason why she was approaching him for, but he knew not to waste time with the likes of her. Girls were wretched creatures. He barely absorbed what she was chattering about, but he did hear the word ‘frog’ and it gave him a wicked idea.

Frogs. Yeah. Dozens of them.

The girl was still babbling.

"Shut up," he snapped as he glared at her, attempting to move around the girl. He couldn’t even waste one minute on the stupid chit. He had better things to do.

Yeah. Frogs were a good idea.
