SHOPKEEPER PERMIT

Shop name: Quill & Ink
Shop Type: Purveyor of magical stationary.
Location: Diagon Alley

Short Description (50 words max): A shop for all your magical stationary needs, from singing notecards to self-concealing journals, to the largest selection of parchment, quills and ink imaginable.
Long Description (200 words min):
The Quill & Ink is a supplier of all manner of instruments for the written word, from simple parchment, to journals that only reveal their contents to the owner and inks of ever shade and grade -- and everything in between. The shop is situated in the heart of Diagon Alley, and while it’s a relatively new establishment, it has quickly gained popularity as being one of the premier suppliers of magical stationary. Like most shops in Diagon Alley, it is considerably larger on the inside than it is on the outside. The interior is elegant and ornate, consisting mainly of rich, warm panels of mahogany with touches of detail in pewter, and is so well lit as to give the impression of being suffused in a friendly golden glow. Reams of paper sit in prominent display, as well as quills of all shapes and sizes from every bird imaginable, and an entire wall is devoted to an astounding selection of ink for every occasion. The shop is divided into two levels, a floor level that holds the counter with the register, and the level above that houses journals, sketchbooks, a small selection of simple art supplies (mainly watercolors and colored pencils) and anything else a customer might require. The two levels are connected by a spiraling staircase made out of  of wrought-iron.

What purpose will this shop serve other than selling things and being the home of your character? Why would people want to RP there just for fun?
To serve as a gathering place for students, adults and employees of the Ministry and St. Mungo’s alike! I see it as a good place to go to for a multitude of reasons, ranging from shopping for school supplies to finding the perfect parchment for that love note you want to write to your sweetheart. Bring your friends, stir up some intrigue, or drop by to banter with the handsome shopkeeper.

Biography: (300 words minimum.)
Matthew Payne’s last will and testament had been abundantly clear on the matter. The boy gets everything, it had read, scrawled in the old man’s impatient handwriting. No need to make a God damn fuss.

And everything meant -- everything. That big old ramshackle manor house, the kings kept inside, as well as the land that surrounded it (at least what little was left of it) belonged to Hugo now. It was bound to him by blood as surely as it had been bound to hi by magic. Indeed, that had been a rather elegant bit of spellwork. Hugo recalled  how the power had stirred when the document touched his skin, how it had seemed to respond to his very blood, when the solicitor handed it over shortly after the funeral. It had been a transfer of ownership, subtle but absolute. Scribe magic, Uncle Matthew would to call, the trick of imbuing power into ink and symbols. It was a sophisticated bit of charm work that was generations upon generations old, a Payne tradition.

It was in that final gesture that Hugo had finally acknowledged that the old bastard was well and truly gone. Matthew Payne was gone, and he had named his great-nephew, Hugo Igneous Payne, the heir to his fortune.

There was nothing for it but to get spectacularly drunk after that.

Though it took the better part of the month to finalize the arrangements, it felt strangely good to be back. The air of the manor was stale with memories, old joys and regrets, tasting of leather and link, parchment and balsam and a hint of rosewater the late Mrs. Payne had been so fond of. Knowing old Uncle Matthew would have wanted it that way, Hugo took up in the master bedroom. With boxes and chests towering over furnishings in the parlor and many long days of cleaning and categorizing ahead, Hugo needed a base of operations, a place to call his own while he waged war on a house that had yet to realize that its former master was gone.

Not a single room was spared. Hugo went through closets and book cases, cupboards and trunks, throwing away dusty old curtains and welcoming sunlight and crisp sea air into places that had not see the like in all of Hugo’s memories growing up. He cleaned and swept and dusted, sorted through junk, treasures, relics and heirlooms, threw away what he could, stored away what he couldn’t, and kept was too precious to set aside.

There was so much history, so much knowledge, that the work, in time, ceased to feel like work at all. He was an archaeologist unearthing artifacts from his childhood, piecing together a family history that his uncle had fed him in satisfying tidbits over the years.

Perhaps he would find something in this excavation that would shed light on his own origins. Or the future that lay ahead.

Roleplay:
Reply as your character to the following:

It was impossible for Dianne to stay out of trouble. It wasn't that she was looking for trouble, it's just that trouble always managed to find her. Today she wished she could find something equally familiar but more comforting.

The five-year old girl hugged her puffskein closer to her and brushed her face in its soft fur for comfort. She had named him herself and he was always her special pet. No she was certain she had never gone down this side street before. Her anxiety increased every second as darkness fell as she walked down the road. A loud noise came to her left and she buried her face in her pet's fur completely. The scared girl bolted the opposite way slamming the both of them into the wall of the nearest building. Tottering back a few steps she found a door a few feet to her right and ran to open it. What light there was inside spilled out into the darkness and she spilled into the room.

Once in, she was caught between the impulse to curl her cloak up more tightly around her and loosen her grip on it. She wasn't alone anymore but she was now among strangers instead, which was nearly as terrifying. Her puffskein had recovered from the shock of the wall and now was purring contentedly as the girl hugged it, causing a mildly calming effect on the girl. Gathering her courage, she marched up to the nearest person, pulled on the nearest clothing hem and blurted out in a loud voice:

"I'm lost and it's dark and I wanted to know where I am but I'm not scared but I am worried that Sambundeakin is scared because he's little and needs something to eat and wants to go home."

She paused to draw a breath in her nearly never-ending sentence, "He misses my and his mommy."

To explain the scared girl held up the custard-colored puffskein. Sambundeakin the puffskein, however simply purred as if nothing on earth was wrong in the world.
