→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.
Name: Calliope Ariadne Nightingale

Birthday: October 31, 1923

Hometown: New York, New York, USA

Bloodline:
Halfblood/Muggleborn (daughter of a pureblood Squib and a Muggle)

Current Levels: C2D4T3S3

Current Year: Primary III

Year Requested: Troisième Année (3e)

Reason for Transfer:
Calliope is a budding author, and she wants to pursue her dreams at a school that can give her that.  Her father has scraped enough galleons together to allow her to attend Beauxbatons, provided she can get her grades up.  Although Calliope is smart, and rather talented, she slacks off in the subjects she found little use for (hence her low levels).  Perhaps, if her interests are met, she'll put a little more work into her studies.

Biography:
Born October 31st, 1923 in New York City, USA, Calliope is the halfblood daughter of Henry Nightingale (an American pureblooded Squib), and Margaret Killian (a Scottish Muggle).  There's a measure of sadness associated with memories of her mother, who was lost in the Time Warp, but she and her family only remember that she died.  Calliope is the oldest of two-- her younger sister Evalyn is eight years old.  Callie has lived in a city her whole life, from New York to Edinburgh as a toddler, back to New York, and most recently in Boston at Salem Institute.

Callie's family was never wealthy.  Her father Henry owns a muggle grocery in Manhattan, and while he has managed to stay in business due to wizarding sales of potions supplies during the Great Depression, he's still struggling to get his business back on track.  Neither of her parents were of magical blood, and while her mother Margaret was always aware of the magical world her husband came from, she rarely involved herself with such things.  As such, Calliope was raised very much a muggle child.  Her mother always taught her to keep her chin up even when times were hard; as such, Calliope adopted an eternally optimistic view on the world.

She began showing signs of magical ability very early, even when she was three years old.  The shock was incredible to her parents, who never expected that the magical abilities of Henry's side of the family would manifest in their children.  At age eleven, they enrolled her at Salem Institute in Boston.  She found very little for herself there, and spent the three years whittling away, doing little and passing few classes.  Her mind wasn't engaged with things like politics and medicine.  She wanted to be an author-- a novelist, someone who could make the stories in her head come to life... She begged her father to send her to Beauxbatons, but the tuition was far more  and the school too far away for travel costs to be effective. Finally, however, her father was able to scrape together enough money to let her go to France to study.

[Beauxbatons] Ecole Request: Humanities

Personality:
Eternally optimistic and a lover of anything fun, Callie is all smiles and laughter.  She plays dumb, but the truth is that she's a very intelligent girl with more smarts than people give her credit for.  She likes to dress well, and she's definitely self-conscious about her appearance, but for the most part she's confident with who she is.  Callie is also a klutz-- she tried Quodpot once.  It was a disaster.

Appearance:
Flaming red hair, bright blue eyes. Slim, shorter in stature. Her clothes are very girly, but functional, and she prefers a pair of simple Mary-Jane shoes versus anything with a slight heel (except when she wants to dress up a bit).  Wears a healthy (but not overkill) amount of make-up, especially on her eyes.

Transfer Application

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.
Name: Maighread "Calliope" Nightingale

Birthday: 17 April, 1960

Hometown: Westchester, NY, USA - currently lives in Edinburgh, Scotland

Bloodline: Squib-born Halfblood (parents are both Squibs)

Current Levels: C2D4T3S3

Current Year: Third

Year Requested: Third is fine, but fourth would be okay.

Reason for Transfer:
Calliope has been seriously thinking about what she wants to do with her life outside of school.  Although she is young, only thirteen, she has grown to truly love the medical arts and wants to become a magical physician.  Knowing that although Hogwarts was an excellent school, it could not compare with Salem's Alchemy and Healing classes.  Calliope missed the United States anyway - she hadn't been there since she was nine.

Her transfer also has something to do with feeling left out at Hogwarts.  Calliope hasn't found her niche yet.  Perhaps the familiarity of being back in the US will help her be a little less awkward.

Her request to be placed into the Knight Society may be strange since Calliope is anything but quiet, but she is an introvert in her own way - she is studious, prefers small groups or her own company over large crowds, and she is a great listener.

Biography:
Maighread "Calliope" Nightingale is the first-born daughter of Laurel Ellis and Henry Nightingale. Although Calliope comes from two long lines of Pureblood (Henry) and Halfblood (Laurel) witches and wizards, she is technically Muggleborn since her parents are both Squibs. She has one younger sibling, a sister named Emma, who is four years younger than Calliope and also a witch.
Calliope holds dual citizenship with the United States and the United Kingdom. Her father is originally from London, England while her mother is a native of New York City. Her parents met while Henry was teaching at one of the universities in New York for a year, and when they eventually started a family, Calliope was born in the United States. As a result, her accent is a little strange - half-British, half American.
Growing up, Calliope's parents never expected their daughter to possess magical abilities. Although her familial history was steeped in magic, the fact remained that both Margaret and Henry were Squibs. The likelihood of any of their children being witches or wizards was very low. When they found Calliope levitating her cereal in her high chair, it was a bit of a shock but a delight nonetheless. Calliope continued to show signs of her magical abilities all throughout her childhood, and eventually Emma joined her. It soon became clear that magic wasn't the only thing Calliope was gifted with – she was also academically bright and possessed an excellent photographic memory.
Most of Calliope's early childhood was spent in Westchester, NY. One of her favorite pastimes was going out to an empty field somewhere with her toy broomstick and flying around. Even though her father couldn't ride one himself, he was still very knowledgeable from managing a local Quidditch team in England as a boy. Under Henry's tutelage, Calliope became pretty good at the sport, especially as a Beater.
The year of Calliope's ninth birthday, the Nightingales moved back to the UK, settling outside of Edinburgh to live with Henry's mother, Maighread Elkhart-Nightingale, Calliope's namesake. Around this time, the younger Maighread began to go by her middle name “Calliope” to avoid confusion. She now prefers it, although her parents sometimes still affectionately call her “Mai”.

[Salem] Society Request:
Bishop / Knight / Pawn / Rook

Personality:Calliope is a bit of a dichotomy, similar to that of fire and water. Like fire, she's passionate, outgoing, strongly opinionated, fiercely loyal, and stubborn. But like water, she is fluid and buoyant – caring, flexible, a deep thinker. She has an uncanny intuition and is an excellent judge of character. Above all, she values kindness, creativity, and intelligence and has no use for cruelty, dullness, and ignorance.
Calliope can be a bit elitist when it comes to academics, although she tries her hardest to stick to her own moral codes and avoid hypocrisy by being accepting of all people. She prefers to work alone. In small groups or one-on-one social situations, she is very comfortable and can carry on a good, intelligent conversation. Calliope loves meeting new people and goes out of her way to do it. But she is uncomfortable in large groups, and she often over-compensates for her awkwardness by being too loud and somewhat obnoxious. Other times, she simply fades into the background to take solace in the pages of a book, or grabs a broomstick and goes for a flight.

Appearance: Calliope's most defining feature is her bright red hair, tamed and smoothed with magical hair product and kept short enough to be functional.  Not one to be overly "girly" but still embracing her femininity, Calliope will often wear light eye makeup to enhance her grey-blue irises.  Tall and narrowly built, she used to tower over the boys in primary school, but things are finally starting to even out (she's about 5' 4").

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Personality:
Maighread "Calliope" is a dichotomy, a bit similar to that of fire and water.  Like fire, she's very passionate, outgoing, strongly opinionated, fiercely protective of those she cares for, and can even be impish. But like water, she is fluid and buoyant – gentle, caring, flexible, a deep thinker.  Her friends tell her she is a good listener and that she has an uncanny knack for looking at a situation from any angle and coming up with a logical answer for any problem. She is a highly intuitive person, and she's found that her intuitions are usually right – she is both an excellent judge of character and a critical, logical problem-solver.  She loves meeting new people and goes out of her way to do it.  Above all, she values kindness, creativity, and intelligence as has no use for cruelty, dullness, and ignorance. She can sometimes be elitist when it comes to academics, although she tries her hardest to stick to her own moral codes and avoid hypocrisy by being accepting of all people. In fact, she considers kindness and tolerance to be as  logical as they are morally correct and believes that both are the answers to solving world issues.  She can also become agitated when working on projects with others, particularly if her project partner(s) have no organizational skills, so she tends to prefer working alone.

Even though Calliope is so in-tune to people's needs and thoughts, it is still very hard for her to find good friends. Even if people like her and talk to her at school, she is often forgotten when it comes to social gatherings.  In small groups or one-on-one social situations (especially in a classroom setting), she is very comfortable and can carry on a good, intelligent conversation. But she is uncomfortable in large groups, and she often over-compensates for her awkwardness by being too loud and somewhat obnoxious. Other times, she will simply fade into the background and take solace in the pages of a book or take a broomstick for a spin, trying to escape into another world.

Her major fears include failure, and jumping off of any structure taller than about five feet, although she has no fear of heights whatsoever (broomstick flight is no issue).  She also has a weakness for sweets, especially Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans - she loves the dare.

Appearance:
Calliope won't necessarily turn heads, but she is unconventionally pretty.  Her hair falls down her back  in waist-length, deep golden-blonde ringlets.  It can get frizzy when the air is humid though (which in England, is often), so she wears it in a long single french-braid with bobby-pins to pull back the wisps of hair in the front.  Her eyes are a strange grey-blue ocean color with flecks of hazel and green in the irises.  She's a little plump, but pleasantly so, and she has a nicely curved figure.

SAMPLE ROLEPLAY
You come across one of these three posts on the site. Please reply to one only as your character would.
*** Remember, you can only roleplay your own character's actions, not James' or Astrid's.

Option I:

Blimey, the Great Hall was packed. It seemed like everywhere a guy looked there was some clown waving around a House banner or yelling about the game.

'Can you believe it?' 'No way!' 'This must be the biggest upset in Hogwarts Quidditch history...'

Stupid Quidditch.

James flopped into an empty seat at the end of the table, shoved an empty plate out of the way, and let his head sink onto his crossed arms, squishing his freckled nose down flat against the tabletop. He wasn't sure why he'd even bothered to come here, since he definitely wasn't hungry. He'd probably never eat again, in fact. He didn'tdeserve to eat. He hadn't stopped in the locker room to change out of his muddy, sweaty uniform after the game either, because he was pretty sure he probably didn't deserve to be clean too; and anyway he couldn't stand to see the looks on his team mates' faces after he blew their chance at winning one of the biggest games they had ever played.

Just one lousy shot. That's all it would have taken. If he could have just got that one stupid foul shot to go through that one stupid hoop, they could have won and he wouldn't have been the biggest blockhead in the entire school.

As if to prove the point, half the people at the next table suddenly broke into a loud victory chant. James pressed his face further into his arms to hide the bright red blotches he could feel creeping up his cheeks. That was it. He was just going to have to run away and move to Nova Scotia. He'd just cost the three-year-in-a-row Champions the Quidditch Cup! How do you ever live that one down for crying out loud? He was only a second year and he was going to spend the rest of his life as 'that dumb cry-baby kid who dropped the Quaffle!'

It felt like every set of eyes in the room was boring into him, and James couldn't stand it anymore. He jerked himself back up from the table and stomped right back out of the Hall the same way he had come in. As he stormed into the quieter hallway outside, he could hear footsteps somewhere behind him. James rounded on the sound and began to shout, his brown eyes shining with tears. "WHAT! Haven't you ever seen a loser before? Why don't you just take a picture!"

Sample Roleplay Response: Calliope stopped in her tracks in response to the Quidditch player's outburst. “Um...” she said, a little taken aback.  She hadn't planned on talking to him, she was just on her way out of the Great Hall to try and get some peace and quiet. It was too loud, too noisy and it didn't seem like she really belonged with the group she'd gone to the game with anyway.  They hadn't really invited her to go anyway, she'd just tagged along like a lost pygmy puff.

But she immediately brushed her own feelings aside.  Clearly the boy in front of her was having a far more difficult time than she was, and he probably needed a friend. It took her a moment to realize who he was, then remembered the Quaffle brushing past his outstretched hand on the pitch and understood.  Even though he'd been playing for the opposing house's team, she'd watched that play and really sympathized with the poor kid.  Something hadn't really set right with her about it too... Everyone had thought he had it. It was so slight - a tiny, nearly invisible but still unnatural jerk to the right, just out of reach.  Maybe it was the wind, she thought.  Or maybe not.  Either way, she had a weird feeling that there was something fishy about the way that play had been carried out, and her "feelings" usually turned out to be right.

It occurred to her that she'd probably been staring at the boy a little too long for comfort, so she quickly buried her thoughts again. "Hey..." she began quickly. ""For the record, I thought you were pretty amazing out there. You have great form, and your manuvers are really cool." She smiled kindly, shrugging her shoulders. "Don't beat yourself up about it... That's the Beaters' job..."  Calliope grinned softly at her own joke and waited for a response...
