Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Eric Taylor

Birthday: 30 March 1943

Hometown: Sheffield, UK

Bloodline:
Muggleborn

Magical Strength (pick one):
Transfiguration

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Conjuring & Summoning

Year (pick two): 6th (or 5th)

Biography:
“He’ll grow up to be a doctor like me.”

That’s what Eric’s father had always told people when they commented on his oldest son. He was well known and well respected in the medical community, showing a high level of care and compassion to his patients. And like in many families, it was expected that his oldest child would follow in his footsteps.

Thankfully (or not, depending on how you looked at it), this seemed true for Eric. He always had the attention to detail, the compassion, and all the other little skills and personality traits that would serve him well as a doctor. There was no doubt in anyone’s mind, not even his own, that he would find himself in medical school someday.

“He’s a good kid.”

That was his mother’s favourite way of describing him, though Eric had always found it to be a bit on the boring side. There were so many more interesting ways that someone could be described; good was so generic. But there was no denying that it was true. He was always the sort eager to lend a hand, help someone out, and never really one to start the drama.

The only exception to this rule was his siblings, but that was to be expected, right?

“Ugh, can’t you just be normal? You’re such a nerd.”

That’s Alice. She’s three years younger than Eric, but far cooler. She doesn’t actually mean it when she says stuff like that, she’s just unhappy that her father’s only plan for her is to marry her to a nice boy and for her to start a family. She always wanted to do more than that, but it’s hard when you’re only thirteen and your family is rather traditional. Eric doesn’t mind if she has to take it out on him though. He secretly hopes that he’ll be able to help pay for her to go to school to be a teacher like she wants to. He knows that she can do more with her life than just be a wife.

“Okay, but when are you gonna pull a rabbit out of a hat?”

That’s Jacob. He’s only eight and is the only one who doesn’t just pretend that Eric’s away at some random, normal boarding school all year. He thinks the magic thing is cool and hopes that he’ll be magic too one day. He likes hearing stories about Eric’s school and doesn’t interrupt him or walk away when he starts talking. It helps him feel a little less like a freak.

“I’ve always got your back, man.”

That’s Andrew. He’s been Eric’s best friend since they started primary school. He’s a muggle, but it doesn’t matter because they’re still inseparable. Eric had been worried that him being magic would mean they couldn’t be friends anymore, but they write every week and hang out whenever they’re home. No matter what craziness happens, Andrew’s always got his back.

They’re going to get a flat together when they both graduate.

“Just… leave me alone, Eric.”

That’s Beth. She was Eric’s girlfriend until last May, when she decided that she just didn’t want to be with him anymore. They’d dated for over a year and he hadn’t seen it coming. He dug through the entire hospital wing, but there wasn’t a cure anywhere there for a broken heart. He just had to figure it out on his own.

It’s not going very well. It still sucks.

“It’s time for a change.”

That’s Eric himself. He’s not sure what that change is going to look like, but he knows it’s time. He’ll figure it out.

If nothing else, at least he’s speaking for himself now.

Personality:
Eric has always been hard working. He’s never had a problem sitting down and doing the work required to get to where he needs to be in life. That’s always been his approach too: if you just work hard enough at something, it’s going to work out. And while this often works out in his favour when it comes to school and things like that, it often comes back to bite him when it comes to thinks outside of his control. Needless to say, he’s never been the most easy going of people. He’s just good at playing easy going.

But that being said, he’s generally easy to get along with. He’s never been much for drama or difficulty, so he just goes with being nice and doing his best to get along with everyone. He’s never had any difficult making friends. Though after Beth broke his heart, he’s not quite so sure that he should be letting people in so easily. But he’s still deciding that.

Eric’s never been been the most athletic of folks. He’ll join in if a game is going, but it’s not his first choice. He’s always been more the type to curl up with a book or hang out in the hospital wing or play a game of chess in the common room. Maybe that makes him boring, but he really doesn’t care.

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

Potions was not Eric’s strength, but he was working on it. If he was going to get a job at St. Mungo’s after this, he needed to make sure that he was proficient in anything they threw his way, and that included potions. Even if it meant spending hours on end in the cold, damp dungeons. But after ruining three separate potions, he decided it was time to give up. Tomorrow was another day.

He was heading out into the corridor when a nervous-sounding voice caught his attention. He turned a corner, catching sight of a girl who couldn’t have been more than a first or second year, searching for Emma Birch, it seemed. An odd choice, given that there were actual real ghosts she had a chance of finding.

“Hello,” he said, quietly, so as not to scare her. “There’s no Emma Birch here. Not anymore, anyway.” Perhaps he was ruining her fun. That’s what Alice would have said if she were there. “But there are a few real ghosts around the castle. I don’t know where they are currently, but I could help you find them and introduce you, if you like.”
