Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.
Name: Coraline Whitley

Birthday: Novermber 28, 1930

Hometown: Appleby, North Lincolnshire

Bloodline: Pureblood

Magical Strength (pick one): Charms

Magical Weakness (pick one): Divination

Year (pick two): 4th/5th

Biography:
Coraline was born to two parents of a powerful magic lineage, but of two different cultures. Her mother, Audris, hailed from the Philippines, where she came a line of witches who excelled in all kinds of healing and spellcasting. Her father, Erasmus, a skilled and learned magizoologist, hailed from the little town on Appleby. The two unlikely pair met in London when Erasmus just started working in the Ministry, and Audris was touring Europe with some friends. They had a whirlwind romance, which resulted to a hasty marriage after just three months of courtship.

Coraline is the second of three children, and is the oldest daughter in the family. She was born on a snowy day, in her grandparents' ancestral home.

Born to parents who are both greatly skilled in magic, Coraline grew up with high expectations from almost everyone, most especially from her family. Her father, with his sandy brown hair that almost always looked disheveled and his chocolate brown eyes that tend to twinkle with laughter, passed on to her his love for all kinds and shapes of creatures - magical or not. It also helped that there home was filled with all kinds of pets, from the usual cats and dogs, to the magical puffskeins, kneazles and crups. Her father is also a great enthusiast of Quidditch, and has taught Coraline the basics of flying earlier than most children her age.

Her mother on the other hand, with her midnight black hair and piercing black eyes, taught her all that she knew about healing. Also a skilled potioneer, it was her mother who taught Cora to appreciate and love potions and potion making in general. She also encouraged Cora to study plant life, especially those that are essential for healing or potion making.

So it was to no surprise that Coraline found the lessons in Hogwarts not too strenuous. She already had some few saved lessons ingrained in her head, thanks to her parents. And though while she excelled in her studies, she had a hard time making friends. She always found herself tongue-tied when trying to approach someone. So, she always seemed aloof and standoffish to others who don't know her. They only think of her as this strange girl who buries herself in books.

And while her family life seemed idyllic enough, darkness loomed over them in the form of a letter. It seemed though that her mother did not tell them everything about herself - or most especially, her father, which would be Coraline's father. While Audris had told everyone that her father was a simple mage who dabbled in the occassional potions, that wasn't really the case. Instead, they would all learn that her father was really an unbalanced Dark Wizard, who was known for his killing spree of dozens of Muggles back in the Philippines. Soon enough, the news had spread out. Coraline was the granddaughter of a Dark Wizard, and everyone else had looked on her differently now. Before, they deemed her strange; now, they are afraid. Afraid that the dark taint of her grandfather's blood might still be flowing within her. Many were afraid that they would also go crazy, like her grandfather.

Studying in Hogwarts by then was a torturous everyday labor for Coraline, where she felt shunned by many of her schoolmates. Still, Coraline forged on, excelling well still in her class. Not minding the rumors and talks swirling around her.

But like all rumors, they would eventually die down. And soon enough, everything was almost back to normal. Well, almost. She still received a few leers and snarky remarks every now and then, but there were only a few handful. She had even now started socializing, gaining a few friends. She had now started to come out of her shell, trying to experience more of the life outside the library or school grounds.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: Ravenclaw

Personality: First impressions of her are that she's shy and aloof to most people, although this is not really the case. Coraline is a bright girl, who loves to talk about the things that interest her. She just is not that great with initiating small talk, and would still occasionally stammer or easily get embarrassed by the smallest of things. She is very fond of all sorts of creatures, and can sometimes be found taking little adventures of her own, looking for creatures to observe or sketch in her drawing pad.

She is actually quite competitive, and is fond of playing Quidditch. To the few friends that she has, she is fiercely loyal to them. She loves being with her family, and usually sends them frequent owls whenever she's at Hogwarts.

Appearance: Coraline's has black wavy hair, that has a hint of brown, especially when exposed too much in the sun. She has black almond-shaped eyes, like her mother's. She inherited her father's pale skin, although she does easily get tanned, which tends to disappear for quite some time. She has a lean and athletic body, and a height that's usually just about an inch or two shorter than most of her peers.

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

----------------------------------------------

The dampness, the silence, and the smell of the dungeons was already familiar to Coraline. As she was fond of her Potions classes, she has spent many times within or near this place. Also, with almost no one coming down here, except for classes, the dungeons were a perfect place to just...think. In here, Coraline could hear her thoughts loudly and well enough.

She was mentally paraphrasing a defense against the dark arts essay in her head when the silence was pierced by an agonized cry. Knowing that only a few ventured here, Coraline slowly headed towards the direction she heard the voice. It sounded like a little girl --  a little girl who was lost, and most probably afraid.

As she crept nearer, she could see a figure hunched on one of the corridors. When it called out, afraid and unsure, Coraline felt pity for the young student.

Since the dungeons had no windows and were dim almost all the time, Coraline quickly and softly said, "Lumos." A bright light emitted from the end of her wand, and soon enough, Coraline could see a wide-eyed, blonde girl looking at her.

"Hello there," Coraline said, with a smile. "Are you lost?"

She then remembered something the girl had said earlier. "Emma Birch?" she asked the girl, before adding. "There's no one else down here, except for me, I think." She paused before saying, "Do you need any help? Come, I can show you a way out of here." She knew that the dungeons weren't really everyone's place to hang out, and she wondered how or why this little girl had ended up here.
