Strength and weaknesses (details please): He has been an avid reader during the majority of his life, choosing to master the theory of a subject before allowing himself to be submitted to the embarrassment of classmates or colleagues on the field. He's a pessimist, choosing to believe the worst in most people's intentions. He is thick-skinned and doesn't cave into the ridicule or mockery from students, very easily. He tends to be kinder to the naive, younger students. While he can be loud and boisterous after a few sips of Dragon Barrel Brandy, he normally chooses his words wisely. If authority respects him, he respects them. Once a colleague has crossed him, he holds a serious grudge.
Physical description: As a dwarf, Zedric is only 4'5" (1.35m). His hair is short to medium length and choppy, mostly brown. While much of his family are thicker and heavier, he remains one of the few of average weight. His face is a little rough from his years as an auror. His facial features are sharp, and his expression is often between neutral and a grimace. He usually dresses himself stylishly with robes or three-piece suits. At grand functions, he might be seen using a cane.
Personality (nice, rude, funny etc. Paragraph please.): He was somewhat of a class clown during his years at Hogwarts; although, his time with the Ministry has strained his sense of humor. He tends to be a bit of a cynic. If in a foul mood or when disrespected, he turns to rude, blunt phrasing rather quickly. On rare occasions, he'll be the clown everyone wants. Some weekends, he volunteers in the kids wing of St Mungo's as an entertaining clown. He's a bit of a snippy, insecure adult, as could be expected. He's a little judgmental, due to the family he grew up in and the disapproving attitudes he has felt from many strangers and acquaintances.
Hopes and dreams. Why are you teaching at Hogwarts?: Zedric wants to see a future where regardless of your race, you are valued and respected when you excel. He has a soft spot in his heart for younger children, though he won't speak of that publicly. He hopes to raise a stronger, more secure generation of students who will leave Hogwarts with a clear direction of where they want to go. He is also wanting to make sure his children will be getting the best education they could, as Marlena and Brokric will be coming of age soon.
Biography (500 words minimum. There is never such a thing as too much.):
Zedric Flair was born into a "pureblood" wizarding family with the distant descent of goblins. His parents were overcome with joy when he was pulled out of the womb, as the first of his generation. Their family was full of strong men and women, though short in stature.
The Flair estate was comfortable. Neighbors assumed the jokes and myths of dwarves holding vast treasures from mining were true, and they wondered what other secrets the family held. There weren't many little people in his life besides his family. His cousins and siblings were his only playmates. He was the oldest of three children. His brother Bull is 4 years younger than him, and his sister Luna is 2 years younger than Bull.
He was picked on by the neighboring humans from an early age. His parents would occasionally forget him when they'd go on family trips, since he would often be hiding in nooks and crannies, reading about tales of Merlin. Once he became of schooling age, his teachers and classmates at Charm School helped him feel like he fit in. There were still the standard dwarf jokes tossed about at him, but for the most part, school was a good thing.
When the Sorting Hat placed him in Slytherin, he felt proud. His dad had been a Ravenclaw, and his mom had been a Ravenclaw. At that time, he would have much rather taken after his sturdy great-grandfather who was the only other Flair alive who was sorted into Slytherin. He excelled in school; although, at Hogwarts, he was never valedictorian of his year. His friend group consisted of mostly purebloods with a few half-bloods thrown in for sport. His personality was much bigger than he actually was. This got him into quite a few sticky situations before he was able to use his wand like a real wizard.
Relationally speaking, he didn't date anyone until after he graduated. He was once engaged to another girl of short stature, but he broke it off when he discovered she had been cheating on him with a full grown man. He broke it off silently, so not to destroy her publicly. His parents, infuriated with how he handled his personal life, then arranged his marriage to Elizabeth Savage, threatening to cut him out of the family if he refused. With no other choice, he wed Elizabeth, and they have two children, Marlena and Brokric. His marriage has been full of angst and tension.
His children annoy him to no end. He finds other kids much easier to get along with than his own. He was quite disappointed when Marlena was born. He had been hoping for a son, but the gods were not granting him any favors. She also took after the more stocky side of the family, so she would have a hard time fitting in with her classmates eventually, too. His second born has grown into a petite, little boy, taking after his mother's side. If both could have switched sizes and birth order, he would have been happier.
He has been dedicated to his job at the Ministry; although, it has been hard to be accepted as a regular wizard due to size prejudices. Recently, Hawksworth has given him opportunities to teach the Aurors in Training, which Zedric has done with zeal. The level of respect he has felt form the trainees has encouraged him to seek out teaching as a profession. He aspires to teach at Hogwarts, a school known for being open minded. Although, he would ideally love to teach Magical Defence, he would be open to teaching Divination.
SAMPLE ROLEPLAY
(Please respond to to this in third person past tense. Do not write the other characters' reactions. Only your own.)
It was the largest office in Hogwarts and, perhaps to students and newcomers, the most intimidating. The shelves were filled with various odds and ends, with a place of honor for the Sorting Hat, and the walls held all the portraits of past Headmasters and Headmistresses.
In the middle of the room sat a large desk. Everything was in order, for the current occupant had always despised a messy desk. It was the sign of a messy mind, and she had always favored neatness.
A clock sat on the desk, which currently showed the time to be 2:05. The meeting was supposed to begin at 2:00 precisely.
Along with order, Anneka valued punctuality. She was a very busy woman these days. Even during the summer, she had a number of matters to attend to. Interviewing and hiring staff was only of those matters. The newest potential member of her staff wasn't making a good impression.
She paced the room, black heels clicking against the stone floor. When the door finally opened, Anneka turned, her expression reminiscent of a Russian winter. "You are late."
Explain yourself was what her face said.
Roleplay Response:
Zedric hadn't stepped foot in Hogwarts since his last day of his seventh year. Even then, he remembered not really wanting to go for the pointless last day. This was different, though. This was for his career advancement. If he landed a steady job at Hogwarts, he might have a greater chance of going back even higher up in the Ministry.
He had to make up an excuse for why he was skipping out on work with his Auror colleagues, and not everyone was so quick to let him go. Once he was able to convince them that he had to check on his ill mother who had come down with a case of dragon's breath, they let him off the hook.
This had left him with precious time to spare. He rushed as quickly as his little legs would push him, cursing under his breath about the length of the hallways. He could feel the stare of children he passed. Their eyes drilled their typical holes in his back. Something about being back at the school snapped him back to his nervous, emotional state of when he was 18 years old. He felt the urge to snap on some of the students who were whispering to each other. He just knew they were making fun of how small he was.
He shook his head and blinked his eyes a few times, telling himself to get his act together. He kept his face stern, not wanting any of the children or professors to assume he was one of those foolish clown dwarves who tumbled about for the amusement of others. He was a serious candidate. He was going to be a serious professor. As long as he played his cards right.
Zedric eventually made it to the headmistress' office. He knocked and entered. His eyes immediately beheld the stone-cold, beauty of Anneka. Before he could greet her with his well-rehearsed speech, she snapped at him.
"You are late."
He was taken aback, but years of dealing with tricky-tongued thieves and criminals as an Auror had helped him to be quick on his feet with words. "I do beg of your forgiveness, Headmistress." He drew his hands together in the shape of a pyramid. "If the gods had given me the legs of a normal human, I would have had no trouble with the long halls and stairwells of this magnificently built school." He smiled warmly at the bitter face in front of him.
"I thought of flying through the hallways on my broom or using a levitation charm to float above the students' heads, but I figured that would cause more of a distraction for your eager students." He took off his coat and folded it over his arm. "I abhor tardiness, but sometimes life has a way of holding you down." He hoped he wasn't leaning too hard on the disadvantages of his height and stature but just enough to ease him from her eyes' severe grasp.
