Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name:
Jamie ‘William’ Duncan

Birthday:
7th of July

Hometown:
Edinborough, Scotland

Bloodline:
Halfblood

Magical Strength (pick one):
Transfiguration

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Divination

Year (pick two):
Fourth / fifth.

Biography:
Jamie grew up in the shadow of his father who was a proud man of heritage who could track his lineage back tens of generations. He participated in all things Scottish. The highland games, a piper band and Scottish tap dancing. Jamie was in his youth expected to do the same alongside is three brothers. Nothing seemed to change for a long while and some would sit restless in the same routines.

Jamie was one of these people. Each morning before breaking fast with his family he would explore the gully behind his house, find all manners of things strange and interesting (at least, in his imagination). By his ninth birthday he realized some of these strange things were not so unreal at all. When he reached a hand into a hollow log he found his hand bitten – a small winged creature that was neither bird nor bug latched onto his now throbbing palm. No amount of shaking would remove the creature. It was not until he felt his will build up inside his chest like a kettle about to over boil did he feel the creatures fangs turn to gum – literal gum. While it still stuck it was unlike something he had ever experienced. He pried the thing from him, casting It aside as he ran to tell mother.
His mother, was someone who would always believe his adventures and tails. No matter how long or farfetched she spoke as if all the things he could ever imagine were a reality. When he approached her she chuckled and pulled him aside, showing him a bent stick she was intent of never letting out of her sight.
‘A wizard’ He would remember that. He was a wizard? Like Merlin from his story books? How could that be accurate and how did father not know of his mother’s history. It was apparent she was better at keeping her secrets quiet than anyone would of thought.
On his 11th birthday she vanished. But a letter arrived from no postman. It found its way into his room through an open window and was oddly sealed with vibrant red wax. At first his father thought it an elaborate joke. Yet another letter came sooner, one from his mother with a page for his father. It explained her history – how she was born a ‘muggle’
‘strange word’ he thought to himself at the time.
And that she discovered she could cast spells and use magic like in the fairytales in her youth. She explained further that her son, their son ‘Jamie’ was also like she was. It took time for him to accept it but with enough time he and his son took time off to visit London. To send Jamie son away to a school where he would fit in.
William enjoyed his first year more than he would of thought. His love of people and stories drew him close to many in his year and enjoyed potions and transfiguration classes more than others. He was apprehensive of those in other houses but always gave everyone a chance to prove they didn’t meet up or did meet up to house mantra.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request:
Hugglepuff

Personality:
Jamie is a charismatic individual whose presence often captures the room if he makes the effort for it. Although he is not a natural leader and chooses not to lead he appreciates having a wide circle of friends and helping those he can. He is relatively optimistic and finds joy in helping others.
Due to his Scottish upbringing he often tries to tone down his accent and to code most of his messages writes in Scots-Gaelic. He has a keen hatred for quils and is often told off for carrying around pencils and other muggle writing utensils.  In his dorm he is one of the few who still hold onto their muggle interests. He tries to persuade others that Muggle music is relevant as music about trolls and vampires.
Despite his care-free attitude to his classes Jamie does well in what he puts effort in and often fails only if the teacher makes the lesson too uninteresting.
On a good day Jamie can be found mentoring younger students and jogging in the fields of the school. On a bad day he is quiet and reserved. Often keeping to the quiet reaches of the library.

Appearance:
Unlike his many siblings Jamie stands sternly and tall with brown-black colored hair and steely brown eyes. His hair is often brushed once before it is forgotten. The effort in his hair is minimal. In his childhood his hair was lighter and faded several shades over a few short years. His shoulders are broad from his recent maturity and his voice recently broken to reflect someone who would seem to be quiet knowledgeable without even needing to read up on a topic.
His stern stoic standing nature often portrays an air of arrogance. Yet in class he slouches and often ruins his posture for the next few hours. He dresses often for winter even in the warmer seasons and is never seen without a jacket over his robes until it is confiscated for breaking school uniform regulations.
His walk is a saunter, often never in a hurry to get to anywhere. His expression set at level between annoyed and relaxed.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.

Jamie had been following the girl for some time after overhearing a few girls snickering behind their sleeves in the great hall. Whatever was going on was beyond the rules allowed to a first year, or any year.  It was even beyond him why anyone would accept to take such a treacherous dare.

The slytherins would think she were snooping – and the headmaster and teachers would punish her house accordingly.
Jamie tapped his chin, contemplating a course of action as he saw her push the past the first threshold of the dungeon. It was easy to stay hidden when he had practiced his footwork with all those years with his father’s highland and tap lessons.  Before she could turn he had hidden behind a grove in the wall, waiting for her voice to break the eerie silence of the halls. How could he make her challenge successful? He may himself get in trouble for encouraging this act of rebellion but it was his duty as ‘upper classman’ to  ensure she was an example for other students to follow. Especially because she was a Gryffindor. She had to be double the amount of brave anyone else was.

He reached for the wand hidden in a pocket of his robes. He pressed its top to his neck and spoke. His voice altered into a ghostly, somehow womanly cry. “Go… Go away!” he tried to mix in a few sobs. But in all honesty he wasn’t sure how to pretend to be a young girl. Or even an older one. “If you remain.. i’ll vanish. I am the ghost of…”
oh shoot, what was the name again?
“E-Emma. You have heard me. Now go, before you suffer the same faaaaaaaate~” He let the last vowels linger. In all terribly old horror movies, the ghosts wailed. Unfortunately for him the memory of these movies continued causing him to giggle into his own spell. The ghost of Emma now sounding a little maniacal before he dropped his wand, revealing his true location.

Hello and welcome to the site!

Your application is really coming along wonderfully. I enjoy Jamie's curiosity and his humor. I do wonder though what your general plans are for his mother. Her up and leaving the family will likely have affected him once the news of his magical ability became less fantastic and the idea of attending magical boarding school lost that air of excitement.

Did she end up coming back when she thought her husband had adjusted to the news? Or is she gone. Just wondering if you had giving that part of Jamie's life much thought.

Also, in your roleplay response I noticed that Jamie attempted a spell on his own vocal chords. We actually have some basic rules we all follow with the casting of spells so as to keep everyone on the same page in their roleplays and class work and such. Here is the link to our Magical Rules. I am thinking he would have gone with a simple Transfiguration spell to slightly alter the sound of his voice, but that sort of magic would require that his Transfiguration level be at least 7. As  a fourth year his transfiguration level might only be 5, not quite high enough to successfully cast the spell.

To adhere to our rules I would suggest simply attempting a good ol' fashioned high voice, maybe muffled by a shirt sleeve or his palms. You might also wish to 'attempt' a spell that he'd read might alter his voice, but then have him realize that nothing was happening and have him muffle his voice with other means in the end.

Once you have considered the changes, please post the entire edited application below and we will be happy to review your alterations!

Hey martin!

For the thing with his mother, it is definitely something he will pursue once he graduates as at the moment he is trying to understand what rifts muggles and mages/witches would have between them to cause a separation. If anything, for now she is just -gone-. Because Jamie wasn't aware of the damage it had done to his family I didn't write on it as its mostly what he would of noticed.

As for the spell and rp sample, I'll fix that up. I was thinking maybe the strength in Transfiguration may of made that a bit more achievable. Thanks for the feedback.

Personally i'd prefer if he were 5th year. But I can live with fourth.
Editing now~
