"It's not safe for us here anymore, cherie."

Not safe? It was something her young brain struggled to fathom. How could her childhood home, where she had experienced nothing but sugar-coated candy memories, no longer be safe? It was her sanctuary, her haven. The warmth of the fireplace hearth and her mothers arms had protected her from sadness, cold, and the terrors that went bump in the night.

Sunny days playing down by the brook at the bottom of the garden. Sludgy mud squelching between her toes and grass stains on her fresh white smock. Butter yellow flower chains, deliciously sweet ice-cold drinks and finger sandwiches all while the heat beat down upon her.

Winter days bundled up indoors, warmth flickering from every room. Hot cocoa with lashings of creams, piled high with marshmallows and an endless supply of powdered sticky desserts. Her mother at the piano playing tune after tune while she spun in circles, a mess of curls and giggles, across the music room floor.

But that was the problem with sugar-coated candy memories. They weren't real. They had been concocted by her fanciful child-like brain as a way to explain away anything that she didn't like or didn't want to accept.

Because how did a child of six explain the yelling that she heard almost nightly between her mother and father. The smashes, thuds, and 'naughty words' that slipped from the study door mistakenly left ajar and floated up to her as she was tucked up in bed. Or the piles of red marked letters that her father huffed and puffed over at the kitchen table. Or the sad atmosphere that hung thick in the air every time a member of the housing staff said they last goodbyes.

They were strange and complicated occurrences that didn't fit in with the idyllic fantasy she'd created. One that had been so quickly shattered in three quick steps:

1. The move from their perfect home in England back to France.

2. The death of her father.

3. Her mother remarrying almost instantly.

Her new father was nice enough. He seemed to love her mother and she more than dotted on him. But he was stuffy and scowled and came with far too many rules. Aurelia didn't like it. She was a free spirit, a beautiful delicate bird and she didn't deal well with being caged. Yet France was one cage she just couldn't seem to escape.

"Maman, please" She'd begged. "I just wan't to go home."

"Hush, Aurelia." A curt reply.

Her mother was always curt nowadays. It was like she suddenly only had a limited amount of attention. Attention which she poured and showered her husband with. He was the new shiny toy, and she... well she was old and worn and boring now. And without her mothers love or attention she had been thrown head-first into a completely new world, vastly different to the one they had lived before.

One full of dinners and balls and important callers. Frilly dresses and pearls and heeled shoes that nipped her toes. Strict rules and tutors and nannies and guardians and chauffeurs. And so many more people that she didn't even know the names of. It was enough to make her head swirl. How anyone was supposed to remember every little thing that was barked at her on the daily, she did not know.

"Back straight Aurelia, no slouching!"

"Soup spoon, Aurelia!"

"Don't slurp your tea, Aurelia!"

"Oh and won't you just smile, Aurelia!

It was exhausting and no matter how much she tried, it simply never seemed good enough. Each night as she was tucked into bed, she dreamt of the same thing. England and home and normality.

Until one day...

"Isn't it exciting Aurelia?" She hadn't seen her mother this excited in a while. In fact, she hadn't seen her mother in a while at all. What with her always hosting some sort of charity tea, or dinner, or book club (?), she rarely had time left over to spend with her anymore "Gabriel has received a simply fantastique promotion at work and we will be relocating to England."

Aurelia stood dumbstruck. Chocolate brown eyes holding so many questions but her mouth unable to actually produce any sounds to ask them.

"What are you waiting for? Begin pulling out your dresses for Clara to pack, we have to leave tomorrow morning if he's to be there and settled before Monday morning... oh, and do please sort out that birds nest before dinner." Her hand wafted to the mass of curls on her head as she exited the room, clicking the door shut behind her.

Aurelia had held her breath almost the whole evening. Just incase anything she said or did shattered this perfect dream she'd been wishing for as long as she could remember. Though it wasn't till late at night when she was nestled between the masses of pillows and teddies beneath her sheets that maybe she should have been careful what she wished for.

Although they might have been moving back to England, it wouldn't be like it was before. Their old home was still gone and papa would still be dead.

Everything would still be different, just at it was now.

Roleplay:
Reply as your character to the following:

Godric Park.

Overhead, the sky was a crisp blue, for once clear of the ever-pervasive spongy clouds and rain. The sun was a lemony-yellow presence, high in the Eastern sky, and in front of it zipped three broomsticks in a straight line, or something very like one. One... two..... three... the boys passed, their shouts of excitement echoing as they chased the snitch, a tiny shimmer reflecting the sunlight.

Far below was another, much smaller broomstick.

It trugged along the ground, hugging close to it like a sluggish choo choo train and occasionally shuttering in protest. This was because said stick was currently being occupied by a very small girl who was tugging upward on the front of it with all her might, trying to coax it into doing what it had been expressly designed NOT to do.

"John, I said wait up!" The tiny girl squealed, giving the broomstick another tug.

Begrudgingly, it drifted upward a foot, and then sank, depositing the troublesome girl safely on the ground. Janey Hurst was not pleased. In a huff, she hopped off the toy safety broom, grabbing it firmly and thrusting it handle first into the turf.

Her brother was such a beast. He NEVER let her play! She folded her arms, seething blue eyes fixing on another figure nearby.  "You!" She barked, much more sharply than she meant to.

"...Do you want to play?"

Roleplay Response:

She'd forgotten just how cold England could get.

It had been a month since they had moved back and yet she couldn't quite get herself used to the chill. Especially since the peeping head of the sun today had deceived her into thinking it was far warmer than it was. Aurelia pulled at the hem of her magnolia coloured knitted cardigan, willing the material to stretch even an inch further. She shivered, ears brushing her shoulders in an attempt to keep in as much heat as possible.

Note to self: always take a jacket.

At least, she thought, the air was less stuffy than back at the apartment. Maman was a mess of colour swatches and fabric pads as she planned how best to redecorate the Sauveterre estate and Aurelia had had just about enough of deciding between watermelon and rouge pinks. (Which truthfully looked identical to her and she couldn't understand why Maman couldn't just pick one and be done with it).

The park was a welcome change of scenery. A small piece of normality in the otherwise bizarre jigsaw puzzle that was her life. Children zipped happily through the air above her, the sky a mixture of giddy wails and giggles. Aurelia lounged back into the park bench, head lolling as she watched with a faint smile on her lips.

It had been an age since she'd flew. Since she'd felt that glorious feeling of weightlessness in her stomach. It both scared and excited her. Teetering on the brim of danger. One wrong twist or dive...

It was exhilarating.

"You!"

The sharpness brought Aurelia back down to Earth. Her eyes fervently searching the area for her Maman only to fall upon...

"...Do you want to play?"

... a young girl? Chocolate eyes took in her petite frame at least a foot smaller than her own and then the broom at her side.

"I - I -" She stuttered, her accent still thick from France. "I don't have a broom." Aurelia exclaimed almost pathetically as she fumbled to stand up and make her way towards the girl.

"Does that matter?"

She wrung her reddened fingers beneath the sleeves of her cardigan slowly, hoping she wouldn't once again be disregarded. While she wouldn't describe herself as a particularly nervous individual, she found that she had an underlying need to be liked which occasionally left her a nervous wreck when attempting to befriend new people.

"Or could we play something else? I have Pétanque?" A small pause and then Aurelia quickly stuck out her hand. "Aurelia Henri, what's your name?"
